Good Morning, fellow Deadheads! This week in 1995 we lost Jerry Garcia, the heart and soul of The Grateful Dead (no matter what anyone tells you, the Dead ain’t the Dead without Jerry). Today we have just two piece of programming, both dedicated to Jerry Garcia.
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Very Best of The Grateful Dead NEW!
We take a bit of a different approach today. Every Saturday night now since the beginning of this station, we have aired a show called Live Dead. (If you haven’t yet tuned into this, it’s every Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. EST.) Today, we are presenting a Spotlight of studio songs that are the very best of the Dead, just under three hours of uninterrupted music.
7:00 p.m. The Jerry Garcia Band Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA, December 2, 1977
I have a particular fondness for this show since I was in attendance. We’ve aired this before, but it was quite a while ago. I thought it would be appropriate to break it out again in honor of Jerry.
In between all this great music is our wide Open Stream, with music chosen by The Music Mermaid who, by the way, has impeccable taste. Tune us in and you’ll see for yourself…all at absolutely no charge ever.
This is one of those weeks where the stars lined up for Tuesday Bluesday. We’ve got our extended blues playlist scheduled and our AOW is also a blues selection. Enjoy.
Our extended playlist gives you five uninterrupted hours of da blues!
Yes, we’re back with five uninterrupted hours of blues and blues-rock with James Cotton, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor, Marcia Ball, Muddy Waters, Keb’Mo, The Rolling Stones, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Roomful of Blues, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Albert King, Etta James, The Robert Cray Band, Bonnie Raitt and more!
7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sing It! by Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, and Tracy Nelson
We’ve got the second airing of this great bluesy album tonight. Don’t miss the chance to hear these three great women together on one album.
Once again, Tuesday is always blues day here in the lounge. And once again, it’s always a great day to tune us in. We’re free (which puts us OUTSIDE the system), we don’t accept commercials, we don’t require subscriptions, and we don’t ask for your credit card number. No need for any of that nonsense.
Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s another Monday in The Mermaid Lounge (ho hum). It’s hot. It’s sticky. And it’s ugly out there. But it’s very cool here in the lounge.
We’ve got some vintage Bonnie for you today!
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Deb’s Stream: Good Luck, Bad Luck, Dumb Luck
Good luck has never been my specialty, especially in the love department. At my advanced age, I don’t even mess with that shit anymore. But I digress. Here we have others whose luck has sometimes been good, sometimes been bad, and sometimes has been just pure dumb luck. You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Eagles, Albert King, John Lee Hooker, Jethro Tull, Fats Domino, The Wallflowers, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, and more.
3:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt Live In-Studio: The Wonderland Tape, August 5, 1977
Enjoy this young Bonnie Raitt selection. Some of this was used for broadcast on Dutch TV. Joining Bonnie on stage was Freebo on bass and tuba, Will McFarlane on guitar, Marty Grebbs on keys and sax, and Dennis Whitted on drums. Bonnie is on vocals and slide, as always.
7:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists
As they say, nighttime is the right time, and these artists prove it. We take you right up to the witching hour with The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Van Morrison, The Animals, The Band, Tom Petty, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Kinks, The Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Sam Cooke, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Poco and more.
Join us.You won’t regret it for one musical moment. We promise.
Good Morning, Musicologists! You know how we feel about the ladies of music here in The Mermaid Lounge, and today we have a special treat for you all.
We have some great blues for you today with three very special women…all of them part of our standard rotation
Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sing It! by Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson NEW!
I’m really excited to offer this album up this week. I could write a review of this, but I actually found one that’s perfect from the Louisiana Music Factory site, so here it is:
“Why settle for one great female vocalist when you can get three, especially when they’re stylish soul diva Irma Thomas, Tracy “Mother Earth” Nelson, and swamp rocker (and roller) Marcia Ball. The talented trio take the Sing It! title seriously, belting all hues of blues with satisfying sass and sincerity. Backed by a fine and funky band of Memphis-soul stalwarts and New Orleans session stars, the ladies shine both individually and as a team. Thomas, the longtime “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” struts her stuff on the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic “Yield Not to Temptation,” while Ball puts some patented bayou boogie, powered by her slinky piano lines, into her spotlight songs. Nelson repeatedly stops the show with her enormous, wraparound voice, transforming tunes like “In Tears” from simple country-flavored ballads into cathartic emotional experiences. But it’s the combined voices that makes the session so special, and the title track, a soulfully scintillating second-line anthem, is the most enjoyable example of the vocal virtuosity of these women. It’s a quintessential New Orleans celebration of singing, well worth the purchase price by itself, and it, like the entire album, also serves as an excellent sampler of the multiple talents of the superb song stylists involved.”
3:00 p.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists
Don’t let the title fool you. It’s a great playlist combining real country and country rock legends. (That means no bad pop bands with fiddles, as Mr. Petty referred to them.) You’ll hear Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, The Eagles, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Asleep At The Wheel, The Band, Pure Prairie League, Jerry Jeff Walker and many more.
It’s Sunday, and that means a day of rest. Seriously. No stress here. No subscription required. No credit card number required. And no personal information requested. Evah. And did I mention we run 24/7 uninterrupted by commercials?
Hi Gang! It’s Saturday, but that’s just another day in retail hell for me. But you? We’ve got some great stuff today, and we’re switching up the format just a hair. Don’t get all alarmed. It’s not a new pattern.
Three women who have been friends for a very long time grace our airwaves today
Here’s your Saturday line-up:
11:00 a.m. Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris & Dolly Parton: The Complete Trio Sessions
It has been a while since we aired this, but it’s sooooo good. This collection includes outtakes that were never released, alternate versions of those that were and, of course, the actual final songs that appeared on Trio I and Trio II. We hear the term “supergroup” an awful lot, but like a lot of things in music, it is never a term applied to women.
We are applying it here in The Mermaid Lounge and have always called this brilliant musical alliance of friends a supergroup. That is what they were.
4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!
This is it! This is the final airing of Browne’s brand new album, so don’t miss it. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you.
10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Honolulu Civic Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, January 23, 1970
This is our first repeat in two years. And it’s a great one. It’ll be like brand new. But, of course, every show from these road warriors is like brand new. Am I right?
Hourly Return of the Trifectas: Various Artists
We’re tossing in some great trifectas today in between Jackson Browne and The Dead:
6:00 p.m. Little Feat
7:00 p.m. Janis Joplin
8:00 p.m. Steely Dan
9:00 p.m. Talking Heads
Tune us in, people. We are totally free and without commercial interruption. You literally have to do not one thing except pull up a tab and click the link below. We collect no information and do not track your IP either.
Good Morning, Reggaeologists (that’s a new one). Today brings us a great live performance by The Wailers, and some other great stuff.
Al Anderson, Bob Marley and Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett of The Wailers perform on stage at the Odeon, Birmingham, United Kingdom, 18 July 1975. (Photo by Ian Dickson/Redferns)
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Roxy, West Hollywood, CA May 26, 1976
Today we get some reggae on with The Legend himself, live from The Roxy. Marley was a pioneer in reggae music, fusing it with ska and rocksteady. He had his own distinctive singing and songwriting style.
3:00 p.m. Sam Cooke at The Harlem Square Club, Miami, Florida, January 12, 1963
Sam Cooke was a singer-songwriter who was one of the most influential soul artists of all time. He joined the Soul Stirrers as a vocalist in the early fifties, but went solo in 1957 and is responsible for a string of hits including A Change is Gonna’ Come, Bring It On Home To Me, Cupid, Twistin’ The Night Away, and Chain Gang. During his eight-year career, he released 29 singles that charted in Billboard’s Top 40, and 20 which charted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Black Singles chart.
7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume Two: Various Artists
As promised, we bring you volume two of this playlist tonight. In this volume, you’ll hear the handiwork of Albert Lee (The Hot Band), Duane Allman, Mike Campbell, George Harrison, Brian May, Andrew Gold, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Taj Mahal, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, John Fogerty, Dickie Betts, David Gilmour and more!
Get your musical shit together and tune us in, people. We’re free 24/7 with no commercial interruption, and we play the best music of all time.
Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re getting closer to the end of the week; it’s all downhill from here. The one thing that will not be going downhill with us is the music selection. We’ve got some excellent stuff for you today.
We have some live Tedeschi Trucks on the docket for today!
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Emmylou Harris
What can we say about this woman? She’s released so many albums and singles over her brilliant career it would take three paragraphs to enumerate them. She has won 14 Grammys and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame. In my opinion, if they put rappers in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (a practice which I think is absurd, frankly), Emmylou Harris belongs there. I recently read the projection is for 2027. What the fuck else does she need to do?
3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne
We’re winding down on our Album of The Week. This is our second-to-final airing; the final will be on Saturday. Get in on it while you can!
7:00 p.m. The Tedeschi Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, August 30, 2012
This great blues-rock band is led by married couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, and was formed in 2010 in Jacksonville, Florida. Revelator, their first album as a band, won the 2012 Grammy for Best Blues Album. Need we say anything more?
Did I mention that if you’re not reading this blog, you don’t know jack shit? And allow me to mention that if you haven’t tuned into us yet, you have no idea what radio can sound like. We’re 24/7 non-stop, free of charge, we are non-intrusive, don’t require a “subscription” and don’t ask for your personal information. Oh, yeah, we also accept no fucking advertising.
Good Morning, Music Lovers across the planet! Here we are at another midweek. We have a lot of wide open stream today, but we have some great programming as well!
Today we have a brand new Spotlight, featuring The Neville Brothers
Here’s Wednesday’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Neville Brothers NEW!
This one has been on my list for a quite a long time and it’s finally here. I got to see these guys just one time during one of my business trips to New Orleans. They were live at Tipitinas, a great venue, by the way. Today we have them as a band, some of them solo, and we also have The Meters. Art Neville was the founder of both The Neville Brothers and The Meters. They are truly a magical, musical family.
7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume One: Various Artists
Here we have some of the handiwork of some of music’s greatest on guitar. You’ll hear Dickie Betts, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Page, Lowell George, Paul Barriere, Jimi Hendrix, Walter Becker, Mike Campbell, Joe Perry and more.
We’ll have Volume Two on Friday of this week, and we’re putting together Volume Three right now. So, if we’ve missed anyone, we’ll rectify that.
Once again, please give us a shot. We’re all about the music because this is a labor of love. We make no profit whatsoever. That is definitely not why we’re here.
Good Morning, Bluesologists! It is, once again, Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we have some excellent programming for you, including music from the original Fleetwood Mac.
Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac is not today’s Fleetwood Mac. It was a blues band.
Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:
11:00 a.m. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans, January 31-February 1, 1970
Indeed, the rumors are true: The original Fleetwood Mac wasn’t a pop-rock band. That happened with the departure of Peter Green and the addition of Buckingham/Nicks. The original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, led by Peter Green. We have the original band live from The Warehouse in New Orleans, recorded over a two-day period.
4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne
The second airing of this week’s Album of The Week, which just happens to be a brand new album by singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. He has remained true to himself over five decades in the music business. His message remains the same, and he delivers it with the same passion as he always has, but this time with the perspective that time is running out. That’s why we love him here.
7:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & B.B. King: Riding With The King
Two blues masters here, and the results are totally pleasing to the ears. This is actually what we should call ‘Not Our Album of The Week’ as it was their first collaboration, released in 2000. It won the Grammy for the Best Traditional Blues Album, reached number one on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums, and was certified multi-platinum in the U.S.
As always, we’ll close by telling you it’s an excellent day to give us a listen here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We are totally ungovernable and outside the system. We cost you nothing. We run 24/7 uninterrupted by advertising. And we do not buy any of our music from either Amazon or Apple. Believe it or not, there are other places to buy music.
Good Morning, Musicologists! We kick a new week off with Mudcrutch Monday Madness, something we haven’t seen for a while. We also have volume one of The Soul Sisters coming up later.
Mudcrutch (Photo by Dennis Callahan)
Here’s your line-up:
12:00 p.m. MUDCRUTCH MONDAY MADNESS! The Complete Catalogue
Mudcrutch is back for another Monday treat. We’ve got all the Mudcrutch you can handle today, giving you all the songs they’ve made in just over two hours of great music. This is the band that left Gainesville, erupted into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and which Petty regrouped in 2008 with its original members.
6:00 p.m. The Soul Sisters, Volume One: Various Artists
We’ve got some great soul music for you here from the ladies, including Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Irma Thomas, Martha & The Vandellas, Carla Thomas, The Marvellettes, The Ronettes, The Shirelles, Barbara Lewis, Ann Peebles, Fontella Bass, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Little Eva and more.
It’s Monday. Some think it’s the hardest day of the week, so why not add some great music to your day. Before, in between, and after this great programming we’ve got The Music Mermaid choosing your Open Stream.
