We get into the Wayback Machine for this one as we explore some of the great country-rock sounds that were born in Laurel Canyon.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So, Linda Ronstadt covers Martha & The Vandellas; The Heartbreakers cover J.J. Cale; Joan Baez covers The Band; Three Dog Night covers Laura Nyro; Emmylou Harris covers The Beatles; and The Beatles cover Barrett Strong. You get the picture. This is one of my favorite playlists. So is Volume Two which will air tomorrow and, hopefully, an new Volume Three which I hope to have ready for Sunday or Monday. Enjoy.

3:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, and David Lindley Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO, September 12, 1999

I had the absolute pleasure of attending this show when it came through Great Woods back in the day. It was a beautiful night in the open air with an all-star cast that did not disappoint. See for yourselves.

We close with one of the greatest bands in history. They started out as Dylan’s back-up band (hence the name, The Band), and ended up being one of the most revered and influential musical entities in history.

Roomful of Blues is a horn-fueled bigass blues band that has stood the test of time, playing and recording for over fifty years with a slew of music awards under its belt. I have a rare working Monday, but it is what it is. In spite of that, The Music Mermaid is ready to rock n’ roll here. We should report here that one of our house bands, some guys called The Beatles, took home two Grammys last night, 55 years after breaking up. We’ll be celebrating them midweek.

This is one of those rare performances for which we cannot pinpoint a date. The back story is fascinating. John Prine, a true American treasure, was originally a mailman who performed a few nights a week at various locations around the Chicago area. One of those venues was The Fifth Peg. On this night, a young Roger Ebert sat in on one of his performances. The rest, as they say, is musical history. This eventually resulted in an album called The Singing Mailman Delivers, and we include Ebert’s 2013 review along with his memories of the performance captured for the album.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Ian & Sylvia

We close out the evening with a ‘Spotlight’ segment on Ian & Sylvia, a Canadian folk duo who eventually helped create the country-rock sound after moving to Nashville.
