Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy Team Up for Our New Album of The Week, and It’s a Sixties Sunday on May 17, 2020!

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Today we have a brand new Album of the Week, and it’s our Sixties Rotation Sunday!

Adieu False Heart-Linda Ronstadt-Ann Savoy

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

10:00 a.m.   Album of The Week: Adieu False Heart, Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy   NEW!

Nobody can ever accuse Linda Ronstadt of resting on her laurels. She was always in pursuit of the next musical adventure. The absolute best thing about Ronstadt — at least for her true fans — was that she refused to have her music defined by anybody. To put it bluntly, she sang because she loved singing.

This album was released on July 25, 2006. It would be Ronstadt’s last studio album before her retirement in 2011, and her revelation about having Parkinson’s Disease. Her musical partner is the amazing Ann Savoy, a Cajun music singer with a band called The Magolia Sisters. Ronstadt is technically a soprano; Savoy an alto. They had made duets before for a Cajun tribute album. Here, they unite as The Zozo Sisters, and the result is stunning.

Absolute Fact: Linda Ronstadt’s ultimate desire was to be part of an all-girl band. Those were the kinds of projects she sought out for herself.

2:00 p.m.    The Sixties on Sunday!

We’re back with five hours of musical programming that defined a generation. From The Beatles, to The Kinks, to Barry McGuire, Lulu, Del Shannon, and Bob Dylan. It’s all here!

So, it’s Sunday. A day of rest. What are you going to do about that?

The Beatles’ Transformative Years, The Final Airing of “The Band,” and A Brand New ‘Live Dead’ on Saturday, May 16, 2020

The Beatles Avedon Poster_upscale

Here’s your Saturday line-up!

12:00 p.m.   Album of The Week: The Band by The Band

The final airing of this masterpiece will be at noon today. Tomorrow, when you wake up and run to the blog, you’ll see a brand new Album of The Week.

5:00 p.m.    The Beatles: The Transformative Years   NEW!

This is the most amazing period in The Beatles’ musical journey. Beginning with Rubber Soul and Revolver, they seemed to just explode into a level of creativity that had never happened before, and has yet to be equalled by any band.

10:00 p.m.  Live Dead! The Grateful Dead: Live at The San Francisco Civic Auditorium, December 28. 1983   NEW!

Another fine live entry by the ultimate jam band.

We’ve got a lot of listeners, but not a lot from the U.S. by comparison. What’s with that, people? No time for music?

Dr. John in The Spotlight, Badfinger Live at the BBC, and “The Band” is Back on Thursday, May 14, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re got some interesting programming today, including a new live performance by Badfinger.

Dr. John 2

Here’s today’s programming!

12:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Dr. John

I find it hard to believe that people wouldn’t know Dr. John (aka, the Nitetripper) a man whose music defied labels by combining blues, pop, jazz, boogie-woogie, funk and rock n’ roll.

3:00 p.m.    Badfinger Live at the BBC 1972-1973   NEW!

Here I am in 2020, and I’m still a big-time Badfinger fan. This was, simply put, a band that made some great music. Had they not been screwed over by their manager, the sky was the limit (in the immortal words of Tom Petty).

6:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: The Band by The Band

The Band is a thing of beauty. There is nothing bad in their music catalogue, and they have withstood the test of time.

Please tune us in. We’re free. There are no commercials. No politicians. No bullshit.

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s Tuesday Bluesday, and today we feature two guitar gods — Duane Allman and Eric Clapton — in some studio jams!

Duane Allman-Eric Clapton

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up!

12:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: The Band by The Band

Coming on the heels of Music From Big Pink, Robbie Robertson becomes The Band’s creative force and the rest is musical history.

3:00 p.m.    Duane Allman & Eric Clapton: Studio Jams 1-6   NEW!

Can you imagine Duane Allman and Eric Clapton hanging out in a studio together? No  need to use your imagination. It really happened.

6:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

This playlist spans Lennon’s musical career. The songwriting combination of John Lennon & Paul McCartney remains the most successful in music history.

What in the world are you waiting for? We’re free. No commercials. No politicians. No bullshit. Just great music.

We Visit the Petty Archive for Some B-Sides, Introduce the New Album of the Week, and Pay Tribute to Little Richard, on the Mother of All Sundays, May 10, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there. My daughter always says “Mother’s only half a word in our house.” She wasn’t kidding either.

littleking-richard

Here’s your Mother’s Day lineup!

11:00 a.m.   Tom Petty: Deep Cuts and B-Sides

Yes, with and without the Heartbreakers. Mostly with, though. Listen, their B-sides are better than most bands’ A-sides. And that’s no lie, as you will see if you tune in.

3:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: The Band. By The Band.   NEW!

The band that began as Bob Dylan’s back-up band went on to become one of the most influential bands of its generation, and delivered the goods every time out. This effort came after Music From Big Pink, another great musical achievement. But this one saw Robbie Robertson take charge, and the The Band took a huge leap forward.

The Band, along with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and The Beatles, remains one of #BecomeUngovernable’s favorite house bands.

6:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of Little Richard   NEW!

Richard Wayne Penniman, also known as Little Richard, was a rock n’ roll pioneer who broke down many barriers in his lifetime. He influenced many who came after him, like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, whose early efforts were steeped in rhythm & blues. He passed away yesterday at the age of 87, and today we pay tribute to his greatness.

It’s Mother’s Day. Tune us in. You won’t regret it.

The Heartbreakers’ Mojo Tour, Steely Dan Live in Houston, and “Running On Empty” Returns on Thursday, May 7, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’ve made it past midweek. That’s always an accomplishment in Empire. We’ve got some great music on tap too.

Steely Dan-2

Here’s your Thursday line-up:

12:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live on The Mojo Tour (1999)

My favorite road warriors return. To fully appreciate this band, you had to see them on stage. Maybe you never did. I suggest you might want to seek out some concert footage. They are everywhere. For a reason. This show is from August 3, 1999 when they played the Target Center in Minneapolis.

4:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Jackson Browne’s Running On Empty

Browne’s road anthem. Recorded entirely on the road: Live on stage. On tour buses. Backstage. And in hotel rooms. A classic.

7:00 p.m.   Steely Dan Live at The Woodlands Pavillion, Houston, Texas  NEW!

Our brand new musical offering comes from a great band. I almost believed the people who said they sucked in concert because they couldn’t reproduce their sound. Then, I went to see them for myself. I have to tell you, I had a great time every time. Sounded just fine to me. Enjoy this one from 1993.

You simply must get on the bandwagon, so to speak, and tune us in:

Tuesday Bluesday With the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the J. Geils Band in the Spotlight, and Our Album of the Week, Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Spend your Tuesday Bluesday listening to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

paul-butterfield-blues-band_1965_01

Here’s your line-up!

12:00 p.m.   Tuesday Bluesday With The Paul Butterfield Blues Band!  NEW!

Hear this great band live at the Boston Marathon’s Unicorn Club.

4:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of the J. Geils Band

Proving once gain that Aerosmith isn’t the only game in town. The J. Geils Band was formed in 1968 in Worcester, Massachusetts, by guitarist John J. Geils.

7:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Running On Empty by Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne’s old to the road. The music on this album was either recorded live on stage, some backstage, some in hotel rooms and others on tour buses.

The Lovin’ Spoonful, Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions, and It’s An Album Two-Fer on Sunday, May 3, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s Sunday Funday, and we’ve got not one — but two — albums on tap rather unexpectedly today!

The Lovin Spoonful-3

Here’s today’s line-up:

10:00 a.m.   NOT The Album of the Week: You’re Gonna Get It by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (1978)   NEW!

I discovered quite by chance yesterday that this album was released 42 years ago, on May 2, 1978. It is just the second studio album by The Heartbreakers, and resulted in two massive hits in Listen To Her Heart and I Need to Know. We thought it would be a great idea to slip this one in today!

1:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of The Lovin’ Spoonful

One of the great bands from that Echoes in the Canyon era of days gone by.

5:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Running On Empty by Jackson Browne (1977)  NEW!

In my humble opinion, this is not only one of Jackson Browne’s best albums, but one of the best of all time. I wore this thing out. Running on Empty was released in 1977, peaked on the Billboard charts at #3 in 1978, and stayed there for 65 weeks.  The theme was life on the road, and was recorded live on stage, backstage, on tour buses, or in hotel rooms.

8:00 p.m.    We Shall Overcome: Bruce Springsteen’s Pete Seeger Sessions

This collection of traditional folk songs arranged by Springsteen was released in 2006. Springsteen called on a group of lesser-known musicians from New York and New Jersey to put together this album. It also resulted in a 62-city tour.

No commercials. No fees. No credit card required. No politicians. No bullshit. That’s us.

We’re Back With Gram Parsons in the Spotlight, the Final Airing of Sargeant Pepper, and Our “Live Dead” Offering on Saturday, May 2, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We hope you enjoyed your Open Stream Friday! We are back today with some great programming!

Gram Parsonsi

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Gram Parsons

Earlier this week, we featured Hendrix and talked about the ’27 Club’ of musicians who have passed in their 27th year. Sadly, Gram Parsons is also a member. He is singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist. In his short life, Gram was not only a soloist, but sang and played with Emmylou Harris, The International Submarine Band, The Byrds, and The Flying Burrito Brothers.

5:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles

This is the final airing of our Album of the Week. Tomorrow when you wake up, there will be a new selection on the blog!

10:00 p.m.  Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Live at The Capitol Theater (11-8-70)  NEW!

This is a special treat! The Grateful Dead with New Riders of the Purple Sage in a 4-hour music extravaganza! A not-to-be-missed event!

What the hell are you all waiting for? Tune us in. We’re not only free to listen to, but we’re free of commercials.
