Johnny Rivers in The Spotlight, James Brown Live at The House of Blues, and Our New Album of the Week on Sunday, May 24, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to a fine Sunday. Rumor has it that it’ll be about sixty here and sunny. We’ll take that. We’ve got some great stuff on tap today!

 

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Album of The Week: On The Border, The Eagles   NEW!

On The Border is the third studio album by The Eagles. On this album, they wanted to go for more of a rock feel, as opposed to their usual country rock offerings. They added Don Felder for this purpose. Some critics panned the album, but I never listen to music critics anyway (just like I don’t listen to sports radio). This is one of my favorite albums of all time.

The stand-out song for me is My Man, written by Bernie Leadon for the late, great Gram Parsons, who died of a drug overdose in September of 1973. Both Leadon and Parsons were in pioneering country-rock band The Flying Burrito Brothers together.

4:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of Johnny Rivers

Talk about an underrated performer! This guy just made so much flat-out great music, and had fun doing it. We all had fun listening to Secret Agent Man, Memphis, and Summer Rain laying around with the famed transistor radio in the heat of the summer.

7:00 p.m.   James Brown Live at The House of  Blues!

The hardest working man in show biz is back!

#SurfMusic Debuts, Our New “Live Dead” Concert, and the Album of the Week, Saturday, May 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We are here on #SurfMusic Debut Day, kicking off at noon (Eastern). Later, we have a new Live Dead. Is Barton Hall their best concert ever?

12:00 p.m.   Instrumental Surf Anthology, Volume 1: Various Artists  NEW!

Surf Music was a pretty big thing during the sixties, peaking in popularity between 1962 and 1964. It originally began as instrumental music, with Dick Dale being the most iconic of the instrumental genre. Then the Beach Boys came along and brought the vocal genre to the mix. Here we start off with about an hour of the instrumental genre.

5:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Adieu False Heart, Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy

The final airing of our Album of the Week (sadly). Tomorrow when you rush to the blog, there’ll be a new album!

10:00 p.m.  Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Live at Barton Hall, Cornell University   NEW!

Is this the absolute best live performance ever turned in by The Grateful Dead? There are many Deadheads  who believe it is. See for yourself.

Duane Allman was the leader of the greatest Southern rock band on the planet, but he was also a most wanted man on guitar. He played guitar for many, including Boz Scaggs, Laura Nyro, Derek & The Dominos, Clarence Carter, Wilson Pickett, and many others.

7:00 p.m.    Goin’ Home, A Tribute to Fats Domino: Various Artists

Here we have another legend and rock n’roll pioneer. A New Orleans native, Antoine “Fats” Domino sold 65 million records during his career. Between 1955 and 1960, Fats had eleven top ten hits. He was quiet and humble, avoiding the limelight. This, no doubt, contributed to the fact that he is often overlooked.

Tune us in. You’ll hear stuff you aren’t going to hear anywhere else. I promise.

Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy Team Up for Our New Album of The Week, and It’s a Sixties Sunday on May 17, 2020!

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Today we have a brand new Album of the Week, and it’s our Sixties Rotation Sunday!

10:00 a.m.   Album of The Week: Adieu False Heart, Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy   NEW!

Nobody can ever accuse Linda Ronstadt of resting on her laurels. She was always in pursuit of the next musical adventure. The absolute best thing about Ronstadt — at least for her true fans — was that she refused to have her music defined by anybody. To put it bluntly, she sang because she loved singing.

This album was released on July 25, 2006. It would be Ronstadt’s last studio album before her retirement in 2011, and her revelation about having Parkinson’s Disease. Her musical partner is the amazing Ann Savoy, a Cajun music singer with a band called The Magolia Sisters. Ronstadt is technically a soprano; Savoy an alto. They had made duets before for a Cajun tribute album. Here, they unite as The Zozo Sisters, and the result is stunning.

Absolute Fact: Linda Ronstadt’s ultimate desire was to be part of an all-girl band. Those were the kinds of projects she sought out for herself.

This is the most amazing period in The Beatles’ musical journey. Beginning with Rubber Soul and Revolver, they seemed to just explode into a level of creativity that had never happened before, and has yet to be equalled by any band.

Another fine live entry by the ultimate jam band.
