Often overlooked, but never here in The Lounge. When I used to listen to regular rock music stations, the women of music were almost an afterthought. You’d have thought that Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks were the only female singers on the damned planet. In fact, women have delivered an awful lot of great music over the years and deserve their place in the spotlight. Another new soundboard recording from the ultimate road and jam band, this time with their infamous Wall of Sound. Get on it, people. It’s a Saturday night staple here in The Mermaid Lounge especially for Deadheads.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams is a blues, country, rock and folk singer, songwriter and musician. Like so many other women of her generation, her early releases went ignored. However, as of today, Williams is recognized as one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her generation. Her commercial breakthrough finally arrived in 1998 with her album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, which fused blues, rock, country, and Americana music into Lucinda’s own signature sound. The album won the Grammy for the Best Contemporary Folk Album. The rest, as they say, is history.

The weekend is technically here, people. Yes. Yes. I know we have one more day of work (in my case, two days), but the end is in sight now. It’s time to start to mellow out. It would be a great weekend to get on board the music train here in The Mermaid Lounge. Come on. You know you want to.

The second airing of Gregg Allman’s debut solo album, released in October 1973 is on tap for mid-afternoon. Not only do we have a total blues Tuesday, but there’s a connection between Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes, leader of Gov’t Mule and former Allman guitarist.

7:00 p.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, MA, Spring, 1966

A classic band performing at one of Boston’s great small music venues of days gone by. I have fond memories of small Boston music venues. Jonathan Swift’s, The Harvard Square Theatre, and Passim’s Coffee Shop are just a few of those great venues which are now defunct. Too bad. We saw a lot of great people there.

We’ve got our second airing of Ode To Billie Joe by the mysterious singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry, whose contributions to music are often underappreciated but also undeniable. We hope to change the underappreciated aspect.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Tracy Nelson who keeps one foot in country and the other in the blues, has been singing, writing and recording albums since 1965. She started out with her band called Mother Earth (which we will soon be adding to our standard rotation), and was the composer of one of my favorite Linda Ronstadt songs, Down So Low, which is most definitely a blues song. Tune her in tonight and see just how good she is.

The Godfather of The British Blues has recently announced his retirement from the road in his 80th year, but today we’ve got a new live performance to give you from 2010 in the UK. Today is the second airing of our latest Album of The Week, and it’s undoubtedly one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

Tom Petty used to say he envisioned The Heartbreakers sitting around in chairs when they grew old and singing the blues. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite get there, but they sure did love and respect ‘da blues’ and made some great bluesy tunes along the way. We’ve got them here for you today to close out our blues programming.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan

The second airing of Bob Dylan’s brilliant Blood On The Tracks, his fifteenth studio album, was released January 20, 1975, on Columbia. The album is home to what is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite Dylan songs, Tangled Up In Blue.

7:00 p.m. Buddy Guy & Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at The Lone Star Cafe, New York City, April 14, 1986 NEW!

Here we have a brand new entry to our blues collection, with two blues guitar masters. This is undoubtedly unbridled electric blues here. These two would play together several times. Another notable show as in 1989 at Buddy Guy’s Blues Legends club. We’re working on that one also.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Warren Zevon

The excitable boy is back In the Spotlight. We haven’t heard this playlist for a bit, and the time is right. Warren Zevon, undeniably one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of his generation whose compositions became hits for several artists, struggled to break through as a solo artist. That is, until Linda Ronstadt began singing his songs on her albums and on stage. The result was a great career that spanned a quarter century until his untimely death at the age of 56. Tune him in tonight.

Before, in between, and after our programming (which we keep to a minimum), you’ll be listing to all that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. There are days when she even picks up a playlist or two on her own. You’ll never know unless you tune in. By the way, today we add the Republic of Korea and Lithuania to our list of listeners.
