It’s Not Only Tuesday Bluesday, But It’s Fat Tuesday, and We’re Feeling New Orleans in Our Bones on February 16, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesianans (is that a word or did I make that up?)! We are not only in the midst of Mardi Gras, but it’s Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge. Luckily, we don’t have to compromise!

It’s Fat Tuesday and we’re celebrating NOLA all week!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (2012)

I only got to visit the NOLA festival once, while I was on business in New Orleans in a previous life. I didn’t get to see Tom Petty, but what could be better than our House Band playing at such a legendary festival? Don’t worry. We’ll be playing a lot of traditional Louisiana music throughout the week at various times. This is a short concert set by Petty standards, but the participants are allotted a certain amount of time. There are plenty of participants over lifetime of the festival. Enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume 1: Various Artists

Yes, there’s also a Part 2, which we will get to later in the week. You’ll be hearing artists like Muddy Waters, Slim Harpo, Little Walter, Clarence Frogman Henry, and Boozoo Davis.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Take A Little Walk With Me by Tom Rush

The only entry today that has absolutely nothing to do with Louisiana, Fat Tuesday, or the blues. But nevertheless, Tom Rush owns our Album of The Week and here it is for you!

Tune us in. This is just the beginning of our ode to New Orleans. We’ll be running great music all week long in celebration of Mardi Gras. Yes, the parades have been cancelled due to COVID. Not exactly the most uplifting playlist on this Valentines Day, but given my track record, it’s appropriate! You’ll hear heartfelt lament from Dan Fogelberg, Aretha Franklin, Tom Rush, J. Geils Band, Mudcrutch, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Warren Zevon, The Beatles, and more!

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 3: Various Artists

We’ve got volume three today. Somehow the women of music always get the short end of the recognition stick. I mentioned this in a Twitter post. First, I can’t believe they’re inducting rappers into what is supposed to be the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That’s enough of an insult. But to be inducting Jay-Z and Carole King in 2021? What the fuck is up with that. It’s an insult to Carole King, frankly. It’s like the Nobel Peace Prize now. A collective joke. But I digress…

Roomful of Blues is described as a blues and swing revival big band. They are based out of Rhode Island out here on the East Coast, and have been recording for fifty years. You definitely have to tune them in if you haven’t heard them before.

The only departure from the blues today, but the Album of the Week must carry on no matter what genre we focus on.

A very happy birthday to Lucinda Williams, a great blues-rock performer in her own right. We are big fans of Lucinda here in the Lounge and she is, after all, a friend of Tom.

BeauSoleil was founded in 1975, and released their first album in 1977. The band plays traditional and original music rooted in the folk music of the Cajuns and Creoles of Louisiana. Consider this a warm-up for our Mardi Gras event.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt FINAL AIRING!

This is the last chance for you to give a listen to this great album. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album featured when you drag your butts out of bed.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer who has been around since the folk revival of the sixties, playing with John Sebastian, the Even Dozen Jug Band, and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band as vocalist and sometimes violinist. Later, she’d lend her considerable talents to the Jerry Garcia Band. She’s in the spotlight here today.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, June 30, 1995 NEW!

Again, more great music from the world’s premier jam band. Even on the same tour no two shows sound the same. What else can we possibly say about them except tune ’em in!

Yeah. I can say it until my eyes bleed. This is the station you should be listening to. But hey, if you’d rather pay for the stuff you used to get for free, go on. Some folks just don’t get it.

Our second airing of what I consider to be one of Ronstadt’s most eclectic works, interpreting the songs of Bob Dylan (for the first time since early in her career), John Hiatt, Naomi Neville and others. The standout song? Undoubtedly, Ruler of My Heart. Brilliant.

11:00 a.m. The Blues Project Live at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, September 1966 NEW!

The Blues Project formed in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1965, and consisted of Al Kooper (keyboards and vocals), Roy Blumenfeld (drums), Danny Kalb (guitar and vocals), Steve Katz (guitar and vocals), and Andy Kulberg (bass and flute). They were short-timers, lasting only two years, but they were very good. Al Kooper and Steve Katz moved on to form Blood, Sweat & Tears after their break up.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez

The second airing of this week’s featured album by 19-year-old Joan Baez.

7:00 p.m. Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at The Austin Opera House, Texas, April 15, 1984

I was feeling the need to get Stevie Ray Vaughan back into the mix here on a Tuesday Bluesday, and we have him live from the Austin Opera House. Light the fire and put your feet up.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! How the hell are you this fine Sunday? We have a great line-up today sprinkled in all that Open Stream which, we are again expanding as we speak (or as I write).

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez NEW!

This album has great historical significance to music. In 2015, the album was placed into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has “cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy” It was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. Later re-issues contained bonus tracks, but this is the original 13 songs and nothing more.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks: The Best of The Buried Treasure Show NEW!

Tom Petty had a side gig. He was a DJ on The Buried Treasure Show, which debuted on Sirius XM’s Deep Tracks channel, then moved to Tom Petty Radio. Tom Petty shared not only some pretty great music (some of it buried and pretty obscure), but his knowledge about its history and how it influenced the influencers. Those of us who listen beyond the catchy tune stage consider this show a national treasure, and agree totally with the sentiment expressed in this article.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

Yeah. He’s Willie’s boy. And he’s pretty damned good. POTR, as they are affectionately known, also has a side gig as Neil Young’s touring band. Can’t get a much better endorsement than that.

I have no clue what any of you are up to today but — whatever it is — you should have this station tuned in. After all, it’s Sunday Funday. And we’re really fun and won’t cost you a dime.

Here we have two veterans of The Jefferson Airplane now singing the blues in Hot Tuna. On this night, they are joined by Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead on guitar and vocals, the very bluesy Maria Muldaur on vocals and tamborine and Pete Sears on piano and accordion. By the way, after this performance, Pete Sears would stay with Hot Tuna until 2000.
