Produced by Peter Asher (formerly of Peter & Gordon), legendary manager of Linda Ronstadt, and friend of The Beatles, it’s a great collection of songs by a woman who is part of a very musical family. Sister Kate does her family name proud.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Old Yellow Moon by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell NEW!

This fantastic 2013 release won the Grammy Award for the Best Americana Album. It was Harris’ 13th Grammy. The album itself was her twenty-seventh studio release, and Crowell’s tenth. Although they originally met in 1974, it took them until 2012 to record an album together. I saw the tour promoting this album, and the musical chemistry between Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell was amazing.

It only took the pair two years to release a follow up album called The Travelin’ Kind, and we’ll be featuring that as a future Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This was the very first playlist we ever put together back when we started, and it features The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bobbie Gentry, Little Eva, The Searchers, The Who, The Supremes, Bob Dylan, The Hollies, The Turtles, Petula Clark, Barry McGuire, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Kinks, and many more! We lost John Prine’s voice early in the COVID-19 battle. He had already been fighting cancer and just couldn’t withstand another illness on top of it. But John Prine left behind a great musical legacy, his compositions a combination of wit and introspection. Today we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

3:00 p.m. Eric Clapton Live in Basel, Switzerland: The Baloise Sessions, November 13-14, 2013

Eric Clapton’s Baloise Session performances from 2013 in Basel, Switzerland. Joining him on stage in his band were Andy Fairweather-Low (vocals, guitar), Paul Carrack (vocals, keyboard), Henry Spinetti (drums), Chris Stainton (keyboard), and Michelle John and Sharon White (backing vocals).

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Transformative Years

Along with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles are our reigning house band. We work very hard to try not to overplay either band or show favoritism, and this is difficult. However, sometimes I feel like we are remiss in playing them also. Tonight’s playlist covers songs from Rubber Soul through Magical Mystery Tour.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys & Friends, Volume III NEW!

A very young Linda Ronstadt and her band, The Stone Poneys, released their third and final album on April 29, 1968. Capitol Records was beginning to realize Ronstadt’s potential and put her front and center on the cover, which would increase tensions in the band. On this album, she began to branch out, choosing songs written by the great Tim Buckley and Laura Nyro. The following year, she would release her first solo album. The rest, as they say, is history. Tensions notwithstanding, Kenny Edwards would become a fixture in her solo backup band for many years.

We bring back one of our best long playlists today featuring bands from the British Invasion right on up to Queen. We kick it all off with Jesse Winchester’s Nothing But A Breeze. Winchester is a guy who gets no respect, in my opinion. I’m quite happy I don’t pay a whit of attention to music critics, frankly. The rap on this one was that he covered three songs (they weren’t his own compositions). And? What’s wrong with that. Plenty of people have covered his songs, Emmylou Harris being one of them. Undoubtedly one of my favorite albums, so enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station takes us into the evening. You’ll hear Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Who, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, The Band, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and many others. It’s a Big Day for The Brits With The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Moody Blues, Friday, April 23, 2021

Good Morning, British Music Lovers! It’s a bit of a departure from the norm here today in The Mermaid Lounge, beginning with some new Beatles material (new to us, that is).

Back in the day, the Beatles ruled, and with good reason. I’m not sure anyone could appreciate how tight a musical band they really were for their time. Even to this day, people who think the computerized shit produced in this generation is actually music and the Beatles didn’t have a clue. That’s a load of bullshit. And by the way, real musicians do not share the fickle public’s opinions. Neither do we. All of these songs were recorded live at BBC Studios between during June, July and August of 1963…before Beatlemania took hold.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd was formed in London in 1965, and became one of the premier psychedelic rock bands. The band’s hallmarks were extended compositions, sound experimentation, cosmic lyrics, and rather elaborate live shows. They were true pioneers of the progressive rock sound.

7:00 p.m. The Moody Blues Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, Colorado, with The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, November 9, 1972

The Moody Blues were formed in Birmingham, England in 1964, and initially came to prominence playing R & B music. Early on, they fused rock with classical, and became pioneers of what is known as art rock. Their album Days of Future Passed is considered one of the earliest successful concept albums.

It’s Our Monthly Visit With The British, and Carly Simon’s “Hotcakes” is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 11, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another fine Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge (although, I confess that I am writing this earlier than usual). We have a new album of the week, and we feature our five-hour British Invasion playlist today.

Here’s today’s simple but satisfying line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon NEW!

Hotcakes was Carly Simon’s fourth studio album, released by Elektra Records in 1974. She recorded the album while she was pregnant with her first child, and I have to say that it’s one of the best albums on the planet. It is also one of the hottest-sellers of her career. Unfortunately for Carly, Elektra released two other albums that year, one was Planet Waves by Dylan and the other was Court & Spark by Joni Mitchell. That kept Hotcakes off the top spot. It peaked at number three.

The album generated two hits, Mockingbird, which she recorded with her then-husband James Taylor, and the other was Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. However, I have to agree with David Geffen’s assessment that Forever My Love was the finest song she ever recorded.

This was a posthumously-released compilation album, as Eva died from cancer at the age of 33 back in 1996. She was virtually unknown at the time. Since its release, Songbird has gone multi-platinum. We’d like the people everywhere to get to know Eva Cassidy. Music lives forever.
