Spend Sunday With Laura Nyro, Our ‘What’s In A Name’ EP and Van Morrison & Some Special Guests, June 16, 2024

Our Sunday schedule opens with Laura Nyro and closes with Van Morrison. In between, it’s songs that feature names in the title, lyrics or both. Some of the people are real; some not.

Truly one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her generation who left this earth far too soon. Her compositions have put many an artist on the charts, but there’s nothing like hearing Laura Nyro singer her own songs.

It’s open stream with a theme from Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

The heart and soul of Fleetwood Mac was, undoubtedly, Christine McVie…at least in my mind. Before the Mac, she was in a British blues band called Chickenshack and was the legendary Christine Perfect. We explore all those avenues today.

Good morning, music lovers! Today we keep it decidedly British with our first live Who performance, our ‘British Are Coming’ EP and a Spotlight featuring the great Jeff Lynne.

Here’s your musical journey for today:

This is our very first ‘live’ Who performance and it won’t be our last as we broaden our horizons. This was an amazing show, played in the rain, on their Who Rocks America Tour in support of their album It’s Hard. It was also billed as their final tour.

1:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

Music from The British Invasion and beyond with The Who, The Beatles, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Steward, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, The Rolling Stones, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jeff Lynne

He’s not just the genius behind Electric Light Orchestra (as if that wasn’t enough), he began his career with The Move. He was also the esteemed Otis Wilbury, co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys along with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy Orbison. Let’s not forget that he’s a solo artist and a producer for many artists, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That’s what I call a great resume.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ladies Sing The Blues: Various Artists

You’ll hear Billie Holliday, Big Mama Thornton, Ruth Brown, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Koko Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Christine McVie, Marcia Ball, Ellen McIlwaine, Susan Tedeschi, Irma Thomas, Tracy Nelson, Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, Sippie Wallace, Bessie Smith, Shawn Murphy, Angela Strelhi, Aretha Franklin, The Blues Broads and more!

It’s Sunday In The Lounge With Chicago ‘Live’ in Japan, a Hollies Spotlight, and ‘The Founders’ EP Later, June 2, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge where the living is easy and the music is totally free 24/7.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

Chicago is like a few other bands during my lifetime that have had two lives, like The Doobie Brothers and The Bee Gees. In all cases, we prefer the previous lives. We’re fans of the Terry Kath version of Chicago with its original edginess and creativity, not the Peter Cetera born-again, milquetoast collection of syrupy ballads. Today we have the original band, what I like to call Chicago Transit Authority, live in Japan.

2:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Hollies

Here is another great British Invasion band, and the band that would become one of the most musically influential of its time and spawn other great bands, like Crosby, Stills & Nash. It’s time we turn the Spotlight back on this band.

5:00 p.m. The Founders: Various Artists

This evening we go back to where this rock and roll thing all began with Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, Hank Williams, Bill Haley & His Comets, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Roy Orbison, Robert Johnson, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters and more!
