I’m not sure people truly understand how instrumental Fats Domino was to the birth of rock n’ roll, but we here do. He sold 65 millon records between 1955 and 1960 — in just five years. He also had eleven top 10 hits during that time also.

Women’s Week Brings Us Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur on Thursday, July 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! The next few days here are big days for the ladies of rock n’ roll as we move toward the end of Women’s Week. Today’s programming is only seven hours worth, but it’s packed with great stuff.

11:00 a.m.   Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore

Lucinda Williams hails from Louisiana and somehow you can just feel that coming through in her gritty music. Among her peers, she’s one of the most respected and influential singer-songwriters in the business. You’d never know it because — no matter how you look at it — women are still considered second-class citizens in the rock world. At least these women are. The little blonde sound-alike waifs they prop up on stage these days are no match.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Western Wall: The Tuscon Sessions by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris

This is one of those albums that musicians feel in their soul. It may not be a platinum seller, but that’s not why it’s being done. It’s one of the things you have the opportunity to make after you’ve paid your dues in the business. And both Ronstadt and Harris have done just that.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur   NEW!

Friend of Linda, Bonnie, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and many others. Maria Muldaur has been out there since the great folk revival of the sixties. She has been gracing us with her own solo work and also singing background and harmonies with just about everyone else, including Linda Ronstadt, the Jerry Garcia Band, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and Paul Butterfield. Today she gets The Spotlight, and deservedly so.

You may not know singer-songwriter Valerie Carter like you know some of the other women we feature here, but you will. The little girl with the big voice fell under the radar, but not with her peers, who often sought her out to sing with them — including Jackson Browne, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley and many others. She was also a long time member of James Taylor’s recording and touring band. Carter wrote the Judy Collins hit, Cook With Honey, and co-wrote Jackson Browne’s Love Needs a Heart. It is rumored that Steve Winwood’s song Valerie was inspired by her, as was Jackson Browne’s That Girl Could Sing.

Emmylou Harris and her acoustic band, The Nash Ramblers, played three nights at the run-down Ryman in 1991. It is captured here in the 1992 Grammy Award winning performance. This event spearheaded the revitalization of the former home of the Grand Ole Opry. My friend George and I were so taken by country music back in the day, that we drove to Nashville to go to the Opry. It was 1977 and I was just 23; George was 21, We never got to see the Ryman Auditorium from the inside. By then, the Grand Ole Opry had moved to new digs. But I’m sure glad the Ryman is back.

We play some great shit. And we don’t over-play either. We run 24/7 and offer just about seven hours of programming; the rest is all open stream. We’re free. We don’t ask for your personal information. We do not require a credit card. Ever.

I have never considered her a ‘warm’ person; she sometimes had attitude with her adoring crowd. I feel the same way about Van Morrison, having seen him more than once also. But brilliant? Absolutely no question. Some days they took themselves too seriously, but their  music? That should be taken very seriously.
