We’re at Midweek With a Trip to Both Motown and The Legendary Fillmore With Some Legendary Musicians On Wednesday, February 1, 2023

We’re kicking off the month of February in style, musicologists! We start ot with our ‘M is For Motown’ EP, followed by Stevie Wonder as our featured singer-songwriter and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ legendary 20-night residency at The Fillmore! Does it actually get any better?

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. M is For Motown: Various Artists

Today we take a trip to Motor City and remember the music that made us dance! You’ll hear Barrett Strong (who just passed away in the last few days), Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross &The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Rare Earth, Mary Wells, Tammi Terrell, and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Stevie Wonder

This is our second airing of Stevie Wonder as this week’s featured singer-songwriter. Wonder signed his first record contract at the age of eleven, and released his first hit called Fingertips at the age of 13. It went to No. 1. Hence, his first stage name of ‘Little Stevie Wonder.’

8:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, Volume 1, San Francisco, 1997

Today we are revisiting this great new release of The Heartbreakers’ legendary 20-night residency as The Fillmore House Band, where they scrapped the script and did something new every night to everyone’s delight. They even allowed those in attendance to leave them suggestions for subsequent shows, as many in attendance had tickets to multiple nights. To a man, the members of the Heartbreakers believed they were at their best for these legendary shows where they not only sang their original songs, but paid homage to those who inspired them. Special guests during these concerts included John Lee Hooker and Roger McGuinn, among others. We’ve broken this massive offering down into three volumes. We’ll be playing volumes two and three over the next couple of days. Enjoy. This doesn’t happen every day.

We can seriously say this is a great day to tune us in. This musical combination is off the charts, so to speak. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming, by the way) and we are totally 100% free, no strings and no lies. We don’t ask for a credit card, a subscription or your personal information.

Great Stuff Coming To Get You Through Monday: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Our Playlist About Luck, and a New Spotlight With J. J. Cale, January 23, 2023

Good Morning to the Working Class. We’ve got great stuff coming your way this morning, including a playlist from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, our playlist about luck on several levels, and a brand new Spotlight featuring J. J. Cale.

Here’s Monday’s musical landscape:

10:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Deep Cuts & B-Sides

Everyone knows Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ hits and there were many. But the band made so much great music that casual Petty fans may not know about many of their songs. To be sure, if you subscribe to Sirius and listen to Tom Petty Radio you’ll hear this stuff, but for those who don’t there’s us. We’ve got everything the band has ever made and then some. This is one playlist that’s not to be missed.

3:00 p.m. Good Luck, Bad Luck, Dumb Luck: Various Artists

This is a multi-artist playlist about luck and fortune. You’ll hear it in the title, lyrics or both from Jethro Tull, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bonnie Raitt, Cream, The Eagles, Taj Mahal, Fats Domino, Genesis, Stevie Wonder, The Wallflowers, The Byrds, Warren Zevon, The Beatles, Steve Winwood, Sheryl Crow, Linda Ronstadt, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Paul McCartney & Wings, Joe Walsh, The Rolling Stones and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of J. J. Cale NEW!

J. J. Cale wrote so many great songs (Cocaine, After Midnight, Call Me The Breeze and more) that became hits for so many artists, yet never achieved stardom himself. We are big fans here in The Mermaid Lounge however, and Cale is much respected by his peers in the music industry. Today we will put J. J. Cale In the Spotlight, where he belongs, singing his own compositions.

Let’s face it. Monday’s suck. There’s no better place to be than right here. We’re totally free 24/7 and we are on uninterrupted by commercial advertising. It’s all about the music. All you need to do is pull up a tab and click the button below!

Heading Toward The Weekend With Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, Our AOW, and Beatle Songs With Character on Thursday, January 5, 2023

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again on yet another rainy morning. This makes three in a row here in the Boston area. Plenty of rain; no snow. Highly unusual. But hey, here in The Mermaid Lounge, the living is easy and the music is outstanding!

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night, Various Artists

We have the flip side of this coming up soon, but for now we’re talking about songs with reference to night time in the title, lyrics or both. It’s Open Stream with a Theme here today. You’ll hear Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, the Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles,The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, The Doors, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Idlewild South by The Allman Brothers Band

We’re winding down on this gem of an album. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday, so if you haven’t caught it, this might be the time! We’ll have a brand new selection on Sunday.

7:00 p.m. Beatle Songs With Character UPDATED!

The Beatles loved to name drop as you will see. They invented characters like Mr. Kite, Maxwell of silver hammer fame, Lucy who floated around the sky with diamonds. You’ll also hear about the man in the mack, a barber on Penny Lane, Prudence (who was actually Mia Farrow’s sister), Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and mother Mary. This playlist has recently been expanded and updated, so give it a listen!

We’re sitting here waiting for you to join your friends from around the world in discovering what great music we play 24/7 at no cost to you. Your money is no good here. We’re also advertising free, and our disc jockeys are virtually mute. Take a spin. You’ve got absolutely nothing to lose.

Saturday Brings the ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP, Volume Three of The Heartbreakers’ Fillmore Adventure, and Dan Fogelberg as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter as the Holidays Approach, December 17, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists across the globe! Hope you’re all doing well as we tee it up in The Mermaid Lounge this morning. We’ve got a pretty full slate peppering our great wide Open Stream (a little Tom Petty imagery there).

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

We’re talking real country here. And we’re also talking about the pioneers of country-rock who made it happen from the cross-fertilization center of the world: Laurel Canyon. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, the Marshall Tucker Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, The Desert Rose Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA 1997, Volume Three NEW!

The third and final installment as we roll out the brand new Heartbreakers’ compendium of their legendary 20-night residency as The Fillmore House Band. They threw away the script and kicked ass, and every one of them felt it was the most creative opportunity the band had, and the highlight of their time together. For the first time ever, there are more cover songs on a Heartbreakers album than original compositions. That was by design as they chose to pay homage to those artists who inspired them. They are, in our humble opinion, the best cover band on the planet.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dan Fogelberg NEW!

It’s time to flip the switch to a new featured singer-songwriter, and Dan Fogelberg is one of the most underappreciated. Except here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we made him one of the very first artists to have a ‘Spotlight.’ Today he starts a week in the spotlight as our featured singer-songwriter.

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat FINAL AIRING!

Tonight we bit a fond farewell to one of our favorite albums and bands as we close out this week’s featured album. We’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new selection.

Saturday is always a bit of a busy day here in The Mermaid Lounge, but we never have more programming than open stream in a 24-hour cycle. We also never run commercial advertising or emply overly-talkative DJ’s. We just play music. Free of charge 24/7. No lie. No surprises. No credit card. No personal information. Ever.

It’s Friday Morning and We’re All ‘Under the Influence’ To Start Things Off, Then We Continue Exploring The Heartbreakers’ Fillmore Box Later, December 16, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! The weekend is nearly upon us once again, and we spend the morning with our ‘Under The Influence’ EP. Later, we continue onto volume two of the Heartbreakers’ long-awaited Fillmore box set.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

You know, we’ve all been here haven’t we? In one form or another, we’ve all been under the influence. Some of it legal. Some not. For some, love is the drug. (I hold no such illusions.) You’ll hear from Arlo Guthrie, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, 1997, Volume Two NEW!

We’re playing this one straight down the line, three sets with 24 songs in each in the exact order as presented on the discs. Today, we’ve got volume two up for you as we continue to unpack Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Live at the Fillmore, 1997. It is truly a musical garden of earthly delights.

Tune us in. We are on 24/7 with no commercial advertising and at no cost to you. That’s right. Your money is no good here. We won’t even ask for a credit card number or your personal information. What are you waiting for?

We Begin Unpacking The Heartbreakers’ Fillmore Box, Give You Our AOW, and Hot Tuna ‘Live’ Later, on Thursday, December 15, 2022

Good Morning, Petty-Ologists! Today is the day we begin to unpack that box of wonder known as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, vintage 1997. We also have our Album of The Week and Hot Tuna ‘Live’ at the same Fillmore later.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers vintage Fillmore 1997 posters.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, 1997, Volume 1 NEW!

Today’s the day we finally get into the long-awaited 72-song Fillmore box set from our house band, and a box of musical delights it truly is. We will be airing volume two on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and volume three on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). We promise that these will repeat over the next few weeks. The entire package has also been added to our standard rotation.

The band tossed out the script for their vaunted 20-night residency at The Fillmore, offering up a different show every night. For the first time, their “covers” of those who inspired them outnumbered their own compositions. We’ve said all along that they are not only one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in history, but hands down the best cover band on the planet. The Fillmore box only serves to bolster our argument. Enjoy.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat

We’re winding down on this particular album, so this would be the time to get in on this one. Our final airing will be sometime on Saturday. By Sunday, we’ll have a brand new album.

7:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988

Tonight we’ve got another great show from a historic venue when we give you Hot Tuna live from 1988. We haven’t heard this one in quite a while, so it’s worth tuning in.

Before, in between and after, we continue to bring you our great wide Open Stream. The Music Mermaid has everything under control here. We have the ultimate faith in her. She has never let us down.

We’re Heading for The Weekend With Some Bob Marley & The Wailers, Our AOW, and A New Beatles Playlist, on Thursday, November 3, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are heading for the weekend now and that’s a good thing. We’ve got some ‘live’ Wailers to kick off the festivities here in The Mermaid Lounge this morning.

We've got some live Bob Marley & The Wailers up first today

Here’s Thursday’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Record Plant, Sausalito, CA, October 13, 1973

We’ve got some great live reggae coming at you to kick off today’s music programming. This one comes live from The Record Plant in Sausalito. Haven’t aired this one in a bit.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Revolver (2022) by The Beatles

This was a brilliant album from the day it was released, and the box set just proves what musical geniuses The Beatles were. The entire 5-CD package will be added to our general rotation this week. We’ll also be adding the expanded, 50th anniversary packages of Sgt. Pepper and The White Album. Then we’ll really have some fun.

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Singles Collection NEW!

We’ve got a brand new playlist for you tonight that includes all the singles on a worldwide basis, both the A and B sides. It’s a couple of hours of great music.

I’m tired of saying the same thing over and over. Looking for a new line. That being said, what in the world are y’all waiting for? We’re here. We’re free. And we’ve got a great catalogue of over 30,000 songs. Who needs to pay for Spotify? This is radio. The best part is anticipating what song might be next. Give it a shot.

Here’s today’s musical journey:

10:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists (pictured above)

10:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Long After Dark by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

We close the programming with a one-time airing of Long After Dark on the 40th anniversary of its release (hard to believe it’s been that long). This one has already been our album of the week.

One more time: This would be a great day to tune us in and get a feel for what we’re all about. Hell, lock your office door, pull up a tab and turn us on. Find a project that you have to get done. Put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and get your musical shit together.

The Beatles 2022 ‘Revolver’ is Our Album of The Week, ‘In Your Dreams’ is Our Featured EP, and The Heartbreakers as Cover Band Later, Sunday, October 30, 2022

Good Morning, Beatle Fans, and we know that we certainly are here in The Mermaid Lounge because they are one of our House Bands (the Heartbreakers being the other). We’ve got a treat for you today with the new Revolver release as our AOW.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Revolver by The Beatles (The 2022 Giles Martin Remix) NEW!

We certainly have already featured Revolver here once at our early stages of life, but this version is the newly remixed version by Giles Martin, son of the man known as The Fifth Beatle, the late Sir George Martin. This is part of the new 5-CD set that we recently got our hands on, released yesterday. We will be featuring this music as part of our general rotation and we will be playing the rest of the material on it as programmed sessions throughout the next several weeks. The package takes you on a musical journey through the making of what is often considered The Beatles most significant album.

2:00 p.m. In Your Dreams: Various Artists

Our featured EP today is ‘In Your Dreams’ with songs about dreams and dreaming. You’ll hear the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Aerosmith, Crowded House, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, The Eurythmics, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Nanci Griffith, The Electric Prunes, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, The Mamas & The Papas, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimmy Buffett, the Allman Brothers Band, Supertramp, Randy Newman, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Widespread Panic, The Youngbloods, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, Patsy Cline, Joe Walsh, Bruce Springsteen, k.d. lang, Dusty Springfield and more!

9:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under the Covers

The same qualities that make The Heartbreakers a great rock n’ roll band are the same qualities that make them the greatest cover band in music as they pay homage to those who have inspired their work. Waiting for them to pull one of these songs out of their bag of musical tricks was always one of the best features of their live shows. Enjoy this playlist as we wind down our annual Tom Petty month. Tomorrow will be the last day.

It’s Sunday and remember, if there is a big guy up there, he even took today off. Sit back, kick off your shoes, grab the beverage of your choice, and tune us in. We are totally free 24/7 because we are all about sharing the music.
