Our Winwood “Spotlight” highlights Winwood’s solo career as well, but this one is dedicated to his “band” work of the sixties and early seventies.

Released as an EP in Great Britain, the U.S. version became a full-blown album when Capitol Records added the hit singles All You Need Is Love, Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, and Baby You’re a Rich Man. The music is timeless, people.

Starting mid-afternoon, we bring you music from across the pond, as they say. It’s fair to say that the Brits were influenced by the American rock n’ roll scene, and the same holds true for the Americans. They were equally influenced by the sounds coming out of Britain. The band’s debut album was recorded over three days in 1966 and released in 1967. After the band’s success at the Monterey Pop festival, their contract was taken over by Columbia. The album was then re-released with the words “featuring Janis Joplin” on the cover. That was the beginning of her meteoric rise before her sad demise. This is our final airing today. Don’t miss it.

This was a fun one to put together. It’s all about the man in the mack, a lonely woman named Eleanor Rigby, an ode to Dear Prudence, the barber shaving another customer on Penny Lane, a serial killer with a hammer, the walrus, the eggman, the taxman, Bungalow Bill, a racoon named Rocky, a lady trying to make ends meet, a Nowhere Man named Jeremy Hillary Boob, Ph.D., a chick flying around the sky with diamonds while another leaves home, and more! It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

The ladies return to take you through the afternoon and evening, making it clear that they are not second class citizens on this station. People refer to Marvin Gaye’s story as “tragic.” But the “tragic” part was only part of Marvin Gaye’s legacy. His influence on the development of the Motown sound earned him the title ‘The Prince of Motown.’ He left behind a musical legacy of great soul and R & B songs which should not be overshadowed by the tragic nature of his death.

Emmylou Harris’ career began back in 1969 and she is still on the move. During that time she has won 14 Grammy Awards, the Polar Music Prize (and many other awards too numerous to mention here), been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Harris is rightfully credited with making country more accessible to a wider audience, and today we put her In the Spotlight.

When I was young and dumb, I just assumed that these guys came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. In fact, what we have are four guys from Berkeley who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. They also just happened to make some of the greatest rock n’ roll on the planet. We love these guys here in The Lounge. Today we have the live from The Fillmore for your listening pleasure. Cook up some crawfish and shrimp and enjoy.

Today’s AOW was George Harrison’s twelfth and final album. It was not completed when he died, but his wish was for his son, Dhani, to finish what he started. Enter Jeff Lynne, commander of ELO and George’s mate in The Traveling Wilburys. Together, he and Dhani Harrison did George proud. This is undoubtedly one of George’s finest albums, released on November 18, 2002, nearly a full year after his death. It’s a great story about a great album, and you can read more about it here.
