It’s Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge and We Bring You (Appropriately) Our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP, LIVE DEAD, and Our Album of The Week, December 4, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers around the globe! What would a Mermaid be without water? Right? Today we’ve got our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP along with our AOW and LIVE DEAD! later.

Water covers 71% of the planet. And today we sing its praises with our EP.

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

It is a fact that 71% of the planet is composed of water. Where would we be without it? Today, we have our EP dedicated to water of all kinds in the title, lyrics or both. You’ll hear Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, The Band, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Bruce Springsteen, Deep Purple, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Grass Roots, Bruce Hornsby & The Range, Lindisfarne, Electric Light Orchestra, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Mudcrutch, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tracy Nelson, Al Green, B.J. Thomas, Foo Fighters, and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rising Sons featuring Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of this great album, so be sure to tune it in. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new featured album.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at McArthur Court, University of Oregon, Eugene, January 22, 1978 NEW!

Another new one from the ultimate road and jam band. John Mayer has already said that Dead Again may well continue on after the remaining Grateful Dead members retire. It’s a testament to their longevity, but I will say it again: Any band without Jerry Garcia is not The Grateful Dead. Period. Without the rest of the band, they’re really not The Grateful Dead. That still stands.

It’s Saturday and The Mermaid Lounge is cookin’ with the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Brazil, Russian Federation, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and points beyond all tuned in. Why? Because they “get it.” When will you?

It’s A Keep-It-Simple Sunday With A Visit From The Brits and a Brand New Album of The Week, November 28, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a simple recipe for happy today, and it’s really rather simple. We pay homage to our British Invasion innovators with five hours of uninterrupted stream, and give you a great new Album of The Week. The rest is wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid.

These particular festivities begin about mid-afternoon!

Here’s Sunday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m Album of The Week: Rising Sons by Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder NEW!

This is a long story better told here, but I’ll give you the short version. Back in 1965, two 17-year-olds decided not to take the same path as Kyle Rittenhouse, and instead started a band named The Rising Sons. Their names were Ryland Cooder (better known as Ry Cooder) and Henry St. Claire Fredericks (better known as Taj Mahal). Ry Cooder, who Linda Ronstadt continually says is the best guitarist she’s ever met, played six- and twelve-string guitar, mandolin, the bottleneck and slide guitars, and dobro. Taj Mahal played harmonica, piano, and guitar. He was also the vocalist. Other members of the band included guitarist Jesse Lee Kincaid, bassist Gary Marker, and drummer Ed Cassidy (who would go on soon to form the band, Spirit). Their band was short-lived, but both Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal went on to be a couple of the most innovative musicians on the planet. Today, we give you their album, Rising Sons.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

About mid-afternoon here in the states we kick off our homage to the bands of the British Invasion and beyond. You’ll hear The Beatles (of course), The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Zombies, The Hollies, Yes, The Moody Blues, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Them, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Rod Stewart, The Bee Gees, The Yardbirds, The Pretenders, Lulu, Herman’s Hermits, Petula Clark, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, Cream, and many more!

Come on, people, and get your musical freak on! Join our listeners from Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, the UK, Brazil, Greece, The Netherlands, Denmark, Russian Federation, Cleveland (no shit), Mexico, Spain, and points beyond. It’s Sunday and that’s a day of rest even if it is the holiday season. Say “No” to capitalism and tune us in. (Did I mention we’re not capitalists?)

Today we give you the music that inspired this station!

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

Yeah. Today we give you all the reasons we started this radio station in one great EP. In all honesty, there are those who came after these artists who are also very much part of this station’s DNA as well, but these are the people who gave me (personally) my own music after years of listening to my sisters’ music. These folks also musically represented the times in which they lived. You will hear Barry McGuire, the Temptations, CSNY, Edwin Starr, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Chambers Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Peter Tosh, The Byrds, Donovan, Joan Baez The Association, The Band, Arlo Guthrie, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Bill Withers

Everyone knows Lean On Me, Ain’t No Sunshine, and Use Me for sure. Bill Withers was that guy. A great singer-songwriter who had an amazing number of hits in a relatively short fifteen-year career. Today we put that guy, his hits, and more In the Spotlight.

Tune us in and get that L-tryptophan out of your system. It’s wake-up time and the music is on 24/7. Before, in between, and after our programming, we are circulating the biggest cache of music anywhere all for free. No kidding. No strings. No fucking lie.

It’s an Eclectic Monday Here in The Mermaid Lounge with The Beach Boys, Some Great R & B, and The World Between Heaven & Hell, November 22, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a rather eclectic line-up for you all today as we kick off another work week, albeit a rather short one with the Thanksgiving Holidays coming up.

We put The Beach Boys In the Spotlight today!

Here’s your Moan-Day line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Beach Boys

It took me a long time to come around to The Beach Boys. It wasn’t until I heard people like Linda Ronstadt and Paul McCartney call Brian Wilson a musical genius that I started paying attention, and I realized they were right. Today we put them In the Spotlight so we can hear their blend of pop, rock, surf, and psychedelia.

3:00 p.m. DJ’s Choice: My Favorite R & B Stream

I probably would have about fifteen different R & B streams with different songs on each one if given the opportunity. But I don’t give myself that opportunity. On this one you’ll hear Al Green, Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield, The Four Tops, Sam Cooke, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Gladys Knight & The Pips, James Brown, Booker T & The MGs, Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Jimmy Ruffin and more!

7:00 p.m. Between Heaven & Hell: Various Artists

This was a fun one. Songs with references to either heaven or hell (or both) in either the lyrics or title (or both). Confused yet? Well, then tune this one in and hear Donovan, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, ZZ Top, Van Morrison, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Presley, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fats Domino, Foo Fighters, The Grateful Dead, and more!

Come on by. People from Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Australia, Japan, Russian Federation, Canada, and points beyond are already tuned in and enjoying the sounds! You can too. For free. Every single day.

Saturday Brings Sounds of The Supergroups, The Kinks In the Spotlight, the Final Airing of Our AOW, and LIVE DEAD Later, November 20, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another one of those crazy music Saturdays here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got some great stuff for you today. Read on for details!

Our jumping off programming point today is an expanded ‘Sounds of the Supergroups’

Here’s your Saturday programming:

11:00 a.m. The Sounds of The Supergroups: Various Artists EXPANDED & UPDATED!

We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

You will hear Cream, Derek & The Dominos, CSNY, The Traveling Wilburys (the world’s all-in number one supergroup of all time as continually voted by the public), The Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson), Blind Faith, Supertramp, The Plastic Ono Band, Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris), andThe Super Super Blues Band (Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley).

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul FINAL AIRING!

It’s sayonara after today’s airing, so get on it. Tomorrow we’ll introduce a brand new choice to you as our Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Saturday is here. The weekend is upon (some of) us. Some of us have one more stint left, and that would be me. But you can be here with us in The Mermaid Lounge enjoying life free of charge.

11:00 a.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists UPDATED & EXPANDED

It is with great pleasure that we give you this as our latest extended play offering. We had fun making this one happen. You’ll hear Jefferson Airplane, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Doors, The Beatles, The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Small Faces, The Rolling Stones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Temptations, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, Jackson Browne, Harry Chapin, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, The Band, Eric Burden & War, The Fraternity of Man, and many more as you expand the outer limits of your musical minds.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Etta James

Etta James’ career began the year I was born, in 1954. Right up through 2012, her big, earthy voice has interpreted many genres, including R & B/soul, the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll. She gained fame with several hits, including Tell Mama, At Last, and I’d Rather Go Blind. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999). Learn more about Etta James here.

Shall I say it yet again? It is a great day to tune us in. We’re finally as the end of the work week (for some lucky souls) and we’ve got this great new, inspirational extended playlist to share with you. That’s nearly five hours of uninterrupted tales of drugs, drink and rock n’ roll. Hey, we’ve all been under the influence at one time or another. This is the most fun you can have without actually doing it.
