Was the man from New Orleans the first to play rock n’ roll? I think that could be the case. This guy was making sounds nobody else was making back in the day. He was certainly a bona fide pioneer of the craft, of that there is no doubt. His first single, The Fat Man, is credited as the first rock n’ roll record and the first to sell more than a million copies. Between 1955 and 1960, Fats Domino had eleven Top 10 U.S. hits on the Billboard charts. He sold more than 65 million records during his groundbreaking career.
We have a couple of live performances of these guys, but we thought it was an appropriate time to put a spotlight feature together in light of Graeme Edge’s passing on November 12. He was their drummer and the last original band member. We bring you the best of the Moodies today.

There have been many players in the evolution of what has come to be known as country-rock. This 1969 release, the first from The Flying Burrito Brothers, continued the work of two of the most notable musicians in this process, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, both veterans of The Byrds (who were also players). These guys married country to other forms of popular music, like gospel, soul, and psychedelic rock, and it’s all on display here in this great new Album of The Week.
This one is due for an update soon, but it remains formidable as it is, as this first sixties EP focuses on early-to-mid music of the great generation. This is one of our favorites here. It started small and became an EP a little over a month ago. We’ve got some great music lined up over the afternoon hours coming from this excellent multi-artist long player.
We’ve got a tour where Petty and his mates were not necessarily the headliners, but that didn’t seem to matter to either them or the audience. This is where the seeds were planted for a great musical match and where Mike Campbell said that the band truly learned how to improvise on stage. He credited Dylan with that lesson. This is one of those “don’t miss” moments.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with EJ, preferring his earlier works to the stuff he made later in his career. When you begin a long-term run in Vegas, you know it’s time to hang them up. I continue to believe this is one of Elton John’s finest albums, if not his absolute best. I have liked various songs here and there since the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, but nothing has knocked my socks off since then. Regardless, this album belongs on our Album of The Week radar without a doubt.
Serendipity has once again found its way into my off-the-cuff programming and given us an All-British Sunday. That can only mean good things. The decision to move this from 50 to 60 songs was as “scientific” as the song selections themselves. We simply decided 50 wasn’t enough and some great stuff got left out. So, we arbitrarily added it in. I believe we pulled the song names out of a bucket when we originally made this list, and just said, “yeah” and “no.” But it matters not. We could redo this list and it might look very different. That’s why we don’t indulge. We think we’ve got a solid list here, and it now includes some of the stuff from Wildflowers & All The Rest and Angel Dream. ENJOY!

Irma Thomas is a contemporary of both Aretha Franklin and Etta James, but she never quite achieved the commercial success of either. Although, to listen to Irma, she’s feels she’s living just fine as ‘The Soul Queen of New Orleans.’ At 80 years old, she’s still singing. We love Irma Thomas here in The Mermaid Lounge, and tonight we are putting her In the Spotlight where she belongs.
