Women’s Week Rolls On! Big Mama Thornton is our Tuesday Bluesday Artist, and Aretha is in The Spotlight A Bit Later, Tuesday, July 21, 2020.

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s Women’s Week and we’re paying homage today to two women pioneers in music. Elvis wasn’t the first to sing Hound Dog.

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday! Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band (1966)   NEW!

Big Mama was the real deal. She sang Lieber & Stoller’s Hound Dog back in 1953, three years before Elvis hit the airwaves with the song, and made rock n’ roll history. Not only did she sing, but she played the drums and the harmonica. The pioneers of rock & roll? They know it all started with the blues and gospel. When Amy Winehouse passed in 2011, she became yet another member of the ’27 Club’ of talented musicians who have died before their time. She joins Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and many others. She is in good company, but we wish she weren’t.

We Open Women’s Week With Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and The Queens of Soul, Sunday, July 19, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re kicking off Women’s Week with a final Ronstadt Birthday Bash concert and a set from the Queens of Soul. Western Wall: The Tucson Sessiions debuts as our Album of the Week.

Two friends got together to sing, and the result was this most amazing album. It was the only tour I missed due to  my partner’s illness at the time. It was hard for me to part with those tickets. On the bright side, I gave them to Ronstadt fans…my sister and her husband.

3:00 p.m.     Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theater in Boston, May 14, 1995   NEW!

I did not miss this one though, and it was one of the most amazing performances Linda Ronstadt ever delivered. The Orpheum may be old, but it’s a great sounding venue. Valerie Carter opened this show and then joined Ronstadt on stage during her show. This incredible set list is up under the Playlist tab. Just scroll to the bottom.

7:00 p.m.    The Queens of Soul, Volume 1: Various Artists

4:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This album is the Heartbreakers’ ode to the blues. Tom Petty once said he envisioned all of them sitting in chairs playing and singing the blues together when they got really old. It’s a shame we will never have that experience now.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal (born May 17, 1942) is the stage and recording name of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and accomplished bluesman, Henry Saint Clair Fredericks. I have bumped into several people who don’t know who Taj Mahal is, and I actually feel sorry for them. Mahal has successfully married traditional blues with influences like Cajun, Caribbean rhythms, Latin, reggae, R & B, gospel, and calypso. He’s an amazing gift to music.

It’s a mystery, folks. According to Harrison, Elvis stood them up. But according Dylan, it was the other way around.
