Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got our usual busy Saturday today, but we’re doubling up on extended plays this month due to the Fillmore Fest at the beginning. Nevertheless, it’s a great day of music.

Today We Put The Band In the Spotlight, and Celebrate The 15th Anniversary of The Release of Tom Petty’s ‘Highway Companion’ Album, Friday, July 23, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists and fellow Pettyologists! I think we’ve told you this, but Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is our ‘house’ band (along with a group called The Beatles). We try to keep on top of stuff so we can mark critical release dates. We’ve got one coming up this weekend.

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Band UPDATED!

The Band is undoubtedly one of the finest musical entities every created. Formed in Toronto in 1967, The Band started out as the back-up band for Ronnie Hawkins and, most famously, Bob Dylan. Music From Big Pink is one of the finest albums ever made. When people asked Robbie Robertson how they got their name, he simply said that was how everyone referred to them back n the day. They were ‘the band’ so they kept it.

From Hawkins and Dylan, the band went on to carve out an amazing musical road that made them one of the most well respected and influential bands on the planet. Today, we premier an expanded playlist for you. We hope you enjoy it.

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Highway Companion by Tom Petty

Highway Companion, released on July 25, 2006, was the third and final solo album made by the late, exceptionally great Tom Petty. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts back in the day. It was produced by Petty, his bandmate Mike Campbell, and Jeff Lynne of both ELO and The Traveling Wilburys. The album generated three singles: Saving Grace, Flirting With Time, and Big Weekend. The first two songs are on our personal list of the 50 greatest Petty songs of all time.

Yesterday was Howie Epstein’s birthday, so there’s no better way to pay him tribute than playing a Heartbreakers’ concert. While Ron Blair (pictured above) was the original bassist and a founding member of The Heartbreakers’, Howie Epstein played bass and mandolin for the band from 1982 through 2003. He was also a great complementary vocalist to Tom Petty, singing much of the back-up on stage and in the studio.

Here we have some of the music that inspired us to start this station back in 2017. It features The Beatles, Barry McGuire, The Chambers Brothers, Arlo Guthrie, Edwin Starr, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Who, Ten Years After, and many more!

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another Moan-Day here in The Mermaid Lounge and we hope to make it a better day for you with some great programming and a lot of wide Open Stream.

The Lovin’ Spoonful was a great little Laurel Canyon band, and today we put them In the Spotlight!

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Lovin’ Spoonful

From the moment I heard Summer In The City, I knew I was going to love this band from start to finish. These guys made some great music in their day under the direction of John Sebastian. We play all sixties music at our retail establishment. It’s what our customers like best. Every time one of their songs comes on, I find myself saying “I fucking love this song.”

3:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell Live at Club 47, Cambridge, Massachusetts, January 10, 1968

Speaking of Laurel Canyon veterans, here’s another one. This concert is from a favorite spot in my home town, Club 47. Joni Mitchell wasn’t the only one to play this venue in its day. Linda Ronstadt used to play here, and then would visit Elsie’s Roast Beef. This later became Passim’s Coffee House, the venue where I discovered Guy Clark. You’ll like this one. It was a great performance.

7:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Drivin’ Songs, Various Artists

This is a fun little playlist: Two hours of songs that either talk about traveling, driving…or are just great songs to drive along with. Watch out, though. Some of them give you lead foot.

The album title translates to Back in The U.S.S.R. and is the seventh studio album by Paul McCartney. It was released in October 1988 exclusively in Russia. It was released worldwide in 1991. The album is live in-studio covers of some of the great rock n’ roll hits that inspired so many artists of the sixties, including The Beatles, The Stones, and many others. This is a great album, proving that McCartney can rock with the best of them. The man’s career has spanned six decades now, and he’s still going. He’s what we call a living legend.

The ladies take over for five uninterrupted hours of bliss at mid-afternoon. This extended playlist features Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Carla Thomas. We Celebrate Linda Ronstadt’s Birthday With All Linda Programming, Save for Our Album of The Week, Thursday, July 15, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s Thursday and it’s also Linda Ronstadt’s 75th birthday. We have people who are our “house” favorites. Linda is one of them. We plan on featuring these artists on our five-year anniversary, so stay tuned. But today and tomorrow? These are Linda days.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Linda Ronstadt

We cover Linda’s career from her very early days with The Stone Poneys up until her very last album. That’s a fifty-year career span. Ronstadt always says that she doesn’t identify herself as a rock n’ roll singer, but during the 70s, she was the number one female rock singer on the planet, selling out arenas across the country and playing a 20-night stand at The Universal Amphitheatre. I know. I went to forty of those concerts across the country.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Exit Wounds by The Wallflowers

Our second to last airing of this beauty, another great effort by Jakob Dylan and his mates. Our final airing will be on Saturday, so don’t miss this one.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA, May 14, 1995

This was one of the concerts I attended in a great old hall with excellent sound. Adding to the musical magic of the night was Valerie Carter as the opening act, and who joined Linda on stage for a few songs as well. Linda Ronstadt always said she would rather have been part of an all-girl band. We’ll get to that stuff tomorrow.

We will take two days to celebrate Ronstadt because there is that much material to cover, and because we remain committed to more open stream than programming. So, tune us in and help us celebrate Linda’s 75th year. Although she can no longer sing, she has left a great musical legacy behind.
