Today We’ve Got John Lennon In The Spotlight, Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley, and Maria Muldaur’s Album of The Week, Thursday, March 11, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a new addition to the women of The Mermaid Lounge, and her name is Eva Cassidy. We think you’ll love her as much as we do.

Eva Cassidy, photographed in front of Blues Alley in Georgetown.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

Seems like a John Lennon kind of day here in the lounge, so we’ve got a spotlight feature for you…and us.

3:00 p.m. Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley, Georgetown, Washington, D.C. NEW!

To be quite honest, I had not heard of Eva Cassidy until a friend told me to find her music and listen. So I did. There could be a reason why I did not have the opportunity to know her stuff, and it’s because she didn’t live long enough to become a star. Eva Cassidy passed away from cancer at the age of 33 back in 1966. Her album, Songbird, sold over five million copies worldwide. This is a do not miss performance. And yes, Eva’s music has been added to the standard rotation as well.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur

We are winding down on our Album of the Week. We’ll have one more airing of this one Saturday, before we choose a new release for next week. For those of you who did not know Dylan had a romantic side, and that Maria Muldaur has such a great voice and interpretive skills, I suggest you listen in.

In fact, I suggest you listen in period. Because you have to pay to get this kind of music elsewhere. And by the way, there is absolutely no music outlet who features women. Not even the ones you have to subscribe to.

All About Blue, a New Lucinda Williams In the Spotlight, and Traffic Live Later On, Wednesday, March 10, 2020

Good Morning, My Friends! We’ve got some excellent programming today, including a brand new Spotlight featuring Lucinda Williams. I’ve been meaning to get this done. Sorry it has taken so long!

One of our favorites here in the Lounge, Lucinda Williams.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. All About Blue: Various Artists

Playlists come in all shapes and colors. This one is about the color blue. I’ve got others on my mind, but blue is my favorite color so this one came first. You can hear The Allman Brothers Band, Linda Ronstadt, Taj Mahal, George Harrison, The Band, Elvis Presley, Badfinger Mudcrutch, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Foreigner, The Electric Light Orchestra, and others!

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lucinda Williams NEW!

I remember when Tom Petty took the time to come out on stage before Lucinda Williams opened for The Heartbreakers and told the audience that they really needed to pay attention to her. They did. If by some stroke of ill fortune you haven’t paid attention to Lucinda, this is your time.

7:00 p.m. Traffic Live at The Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, New York, June 26, 1970

Traffic was formed in Birmingham, England, in April of 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. The band began as a psychedelic rock group, but diversified their sound by adding various instruments, including the Mellotron, the harpsichord and the sitar. They disbanded in 1969, bur reunited in 1970 to release their album John Barleycorn Must Die, and for this tour. Steve Winwood is another favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Tune us in, people. People all over the world are. We welcomed listeners from Estonia this week. We’re waiting on you.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday with Janis Joplin, the Great B.B. King and Maria Muldaur With Our Album of The Week, March 9, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a bit of the blues lined up for you today starting with Janis.

Janis Joplin was a force of fucking nature, gone before her time.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band, Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, April 1, 1969

Doesn’t matter if she was solo, with Big Brother & The Holding Company or The Kozmic Blues Band, Janis Joplin gave us some seriously great blues-rock. She was a force of nature who burned bright, and was gone before we knew it.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur

Funny thing here, Maria Muldaur has a varied musical history, starting out in the folk houses of Greenwich Village, but she is also known as a pretty solid blues singer as well. On this particular album, she does a great job (and a bit bluesy at that) on the love songs of Bob Dylan (yes, he was not just about protest and social issues).

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of B.B. King

The master of the blues with his girl Lucille will pay us a visit as our final musical programming of the day. It’s a great way to close out Tuesday Bluesday.

Tune us in folks! Today we welcome listeners from Estonia, so what the hell are you all waiting for?

It’s Another Monday in Paradise With the Rascals, Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” Project, and Some Pretty Sweet Soul, March 8, 2021

Good Morning, Radio Sweethearts! It’s another Monday but, hey, the sun is out and that’s a plus. We’ve got some great music programming for today sprinkled in with that wild and crazy Open Stream.

We happily revisit Tom Petty’s massive “Wildflowers” project today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The (Young) Rascals

Are they The Rascals? Yes. Are they The Young Rascals? Yes. We’re quibbling here. The Rascals were one of the finest bands on the planet back in the day. Today, we put them In the Spotlight. For your listening pleasure, of course.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Wildflowers Project: All The Rest

It has been a while since the release of the Wildflowers Project, and we’re going to start revisiting it intermittently today. We begin with All The Rest, or the songs that didn’t make the album. Of course, some of these songs appeared somewhere later down the road. However, some were not heard until this project was released, like Leave Virginia Alone and Confusion Wheel. We have those here today.

7:00 p.m. Sweet Soul Music 1965: Various Artists

Some early soul here with the likes of Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Fontella Bass, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Joe Tex, Lee Dorsey, Roy Head, Don Covay, Booker T & The MGs (the original Stax Records house band), Kim Weston, and more!

Please, spare me from having to tell you we’re totally free and operate outside the system yet again. I’m getting tired of saying this. I simply think Americans don’t bother to stop and smell the roses unless, of course, they are paying for it through the nose. The beauty of capitalism is that people buy into it.

We Get Back On Track With Volume 2 of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ and Maria Muldaur Sings The Love Songs of Bob Dylan on Sunday, March 7, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We get back on track with life after COVID today with our great Sixties Rotation, Volume 2 long playlist today, and Maria Muldaur owns our Album of The Week (see the sidebar).

The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2 is back today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur NEW!

Maria Muldaur has been singing since the resurgence of the folk scene in the sixties, and is simply one of the finest singers on the planet. Ask Linda Ronstadt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and many others whose albums her voice has graced. Here she delves into the love songs of Bob Dylan, and the result is just amazing. Enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

Very simply, here we have five uninterrupted hours of the music that inspired this radio station. We got a bit off track while I was sick, but we are back in the saddle. You will hear The Beatles, Cream, The Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, Big Brother & The Holding Company, The Chambers Brothers, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Derek & The Dominos, The Animals, Them, Three Dog Night, The Temptations, Bob Dylan, and many more!

It’s Sunday, and it’s a day of rest. No retail today, people. Give it a rest. The worst thing that ever happened was repealing The Blue Laws in the state of Massachusetts. You can all live without your shit for a day. And we won’t cost you a penny, today or any other day.

Welcome to Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge with Money, Honey; The Beatles “Let It Be” Sessions; Paul Simon In the Spotlight; and Live Dead, March 6, 2021

Welcome to the weekend in The Mermaid Lounge, where we have our usual slate of programming for your listening pleasure. We’ll kick it all off at 10:00 a.m. this morning.

The Beatles’ during the “Let It Be” Sessions.

Here’s today’s line-up:

Music about money, earned, stolen, alimony, in every form imaginable, from The Beatles, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Pink Floyd, Warren Zevon, J.J. Cale, Slim Harpo, Albert King, Tom Rush, Chuck Berry, The Traveling Wilburys, and more.

3:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Let It Be Sessions, Rare and Unreleased

By the time Let It Be rolled around, the Fab Four were barely talking to each other or recording together. But the Let It Be sessions prove that The Beatles were all about the music at the end of the day, and at the end of their run.

6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Paul Simon

Paul Simon is legend in music. He spent years with his pal Art Garfunkel, singing together for the first time at the age of sixteen. Together they made some of the best music of the sixties and seventies. Then Simon continued on as a solo artist doing the same. We feature the music of Paul Simon today, both with and without Art Garfunkel.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Providence Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island, September 7, 1987 NEW!

Another (brand new) marathon session from The Dead for your listening pleasure. No two shows ever sound the same, even when they are on the same tour.

Tune us in. It’s Saturday, kids. We’re on the case, bringing you great music totally free, no subscription required, no credit card required, no personal information asked. Just pull up a tab and click the link below:

We Celebrate Linda, Dolly & Emmylou’s Trio Release 34 Years Ago Yesterday, and The Rolling Stones Are Live Later, Wednesday, March 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s a very special day today as we celebrate the release of Trio by the only female supergroup on the planet thirty-four years ago yesterday. Nobody ever talks about Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris even being a supergroup, but that’s because women are still marginalized in the music world. They were every bit a supergroup, make no mistake about it.

Linda, Dolly & Emmylou. A supergroup no matter how much they ignore it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

12:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris: The Trio Sessions, The Complete Collection NEW!

Today we celebrate three extraordinary musical talents who came together and produced two of the most amazing albums of all time. We give you the complete Trio collection, including outtakes, unreleased music, alternate versions, and — of course — the versions you all know and love.

6:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones, Live at the Palais Royale, Toronto, Canada, August 16, 2002

The original bad boys of rock n’ roll here play it for you live from the Palais Royale in Toronto. Hey, it’s only rock n’ roll, but we like it, like it, yes we do.

In between all of this, we have our usual Open Stream, as chosen by the magical Music Mermaid who runs the selection. We’re free, as in free. No membership, credit card, or personal information required. All you need is a free computer tab, then click your heels, and hit the link below.

We Kick Off March in The Mermaid Lounge With Some ‘Live’ Bonnie Raitt, Music About Luck (Good, Bad, and Dumb), and Our Psychedelic Express Playlist, on Monday, March 1, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Well, they say “Beware the Ides of March,” so it’s only fitting that we kick off the month with our playlist about luck (all kinds). But it doesn’t end there. We have some live Bonnie Raitt and a little psychedelic music history.

Bonnie Raitt at the Rainbow Room in Philly is today’s live music offering.

Here’s today’s musical programming:

11:00 a.m. Bonnie Raitt, Live at The Rainbow Room, Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 1972

There’s nothing like seeing Bonnie Raitt in a small venue. One of my favorite places in the Boston area was Jonathan Swifts in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was a Friday night routine for my friends and I, and I saw Bonnie Raitt there one time. Enjoy this treat.

3:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Good Luck, Bad Luck, Dumb Luck, Various Artists

Luck. Some people believe in it. Some don’t. Some create their own luck. But no matter, because there are plenty of songs about it, from Cream, Alison Krauss & Union Station, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Jethro Tull, Loggins & Messina, Billy Joel, Fats Domino, Bob Dylan, Steve Winwood, The Beatles, and others. You’ll hear them today.

7:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Did you know that scientists are exploring the use of psychedelics to treat mental illness? We used to do our own kind of research on psychedelics back in the day. So did a lot of famous musicians, and you’ll hear The Beatles, Vanilla Fudge, Donovan, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, They Byrds, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Blues Image and more!

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. Timothy Leary said that, the father of LSD. The “tune in” part should be with #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We’re free. I mean, totally free. No credit card. No subscription. No personal information is collected. Ever. So, give us a shot. All you need is a tab. Then click the link below.

Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash Record Together, “Timeless” Debuts as Our Album of The Week, and ‘What’s In A Name’ Playlist Later, Sunday, February 28, 2021

We are off to a late start today, Music Lovers, but the music is still great in spite of all that. We have a brand new album of the week, epic Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, and a great playlist later this evening.

Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash got together to record during breaks in the sessions for Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline” album.

Here’s today’s line-up:

1:00 p.m. Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash, Nashville 1969

While Bob Dylan was in Nashville recording his Nashville Skyline album, he and Johnny Cash decided to get together to record some music. Only one of those songs made it to Nashville Skyline. It was Girl From The North Country. The others were released much later. We have those recordings here for you today.

5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Timeless, An All-Star Tribute to Hank Williams NEW!

This is one sweet album of all-stars paying their respects to a counry legend, Hank Williams, Sr. There are a number of memorable performances here, especially from Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. However, the one that stands out for me is Tom Petty’s version of You’re Gonna’ Change (Or I’m A Gonna’ Leave). Listen for it. Other contributors include Mark Knopfler, Shery Crow, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams III, and Johnny Cash.

8:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: What’s In A Name? Various Artists

We haven’t heard this one for a while, and it’s a good one. Songs with people’s names in them, either in the title or the lyrics. Begins at 8:00 p.m. tonight with contributions from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Jonathan Edwards, Dolly Parton, Steely Dan, Linda Ronstadt, The Velvet Underground, The Turtles and more! Don’t miss it.

Tune us in because, well, we’re here playing great music for free. We never ask for a credit card, require a “subscription” or ask for your personal information. And no. We don’t track you either. Who has time for that? Not us. We also do not accept advertising, and we run 24/7. What else do you want?

It’s a Typical Saturday With Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon Together, Our Final Airing of “Wrecking Ball” by Emmylou Harris, and Live Dead, February 27, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Saturday is our busiest programming day by far, but the vast majority of our 24-hour music cycle remains devoted to wide open stream.

Linds Ronstadt. Nobody touches this voice.

Here’s our Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Linda Ronstadt

We open our programming with the Queen of Rock. She retains that title to this day, as far as we here in The Mermaid Lounge are concerned. It’s more than just the voice (although that would be enough). It’s the music selection, the genres she was able to master, and the way she defied the “experts” in her field who predicted her demise for changing music styles. She’s the package, people.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris FINAL AIRING!

We follow that up with a very good friend of Linda’s, and her career redefining album, Wrecking Ball. This is our final airing before a new album is introduced tomorrow.

6:00 p.m. Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon, Live Acoustic Set at VPRO Studios, December 8, 1976

Two good friends and two extraordinary songwriters get together to sing each other’s tunes. A great take.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, Indiana, July 2, 1995 NEW!

Another new performance by The Dead, this one from the Deer Creek Music Center, which has been renamed about five times since then. But no matter, when it comes to The Grateful Dead, no two shows sound the same, even when they’re part of the same tour.

Tune us in, people. It’s Saturday. I don’t know what it’s doing where you are, but the weather has finally turned dismal here today, so it’s time to put our feet up and enjoy the music! We don’t have to give you a free trial. We’re free all the time.
