Good morning, music lovers! We are celebrating summer once again with volume two of our ‘Summer of Love’ playlist but not until we have songs about colors. Later, it’s Chuck Berry.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Songs about colors in the title, lyrics or both. In case you thought Paint It Black was only one of a handful of songs, think again. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Donovan, Booker T & The MG’s, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J.D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m. Summer of Love, Volume Two: Various Artists

Today we continue the songs of 1967 with volume two of our ‘Summer of Love’ playlist. You’ll hear Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Aretha Franklin, Buffalo Springfield, The Beatles, The Grass Roots, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, The Turtles, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, Cream, Bobbie Gentry and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Chuck Berry

Tonight we close with one of the main architects of rock n’ roll, Mr. Chuck Berry, firmly In The Spotlight.

We’re here 24/7, programming or not. We have our big, wide Open Stream of never-ending songs. Our repeats are so far apart that they are like new when you hear them all over again. Either button will do.

It’s Happy Birthday to Linda Ronstadt, a Mudcrutch Monday and the ‘Summer of Love’ Playlist on July 15, 2024

Good morning, Ronstadt fans! Our musical muse is celebrating her 78th birthday today and so are we here in The Mermaid Lounge. In fact, it will be going on all week in various forms and at various times.

Here’s your Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness: The Complete Works

Yeah. It’s time for another Mudcrutch Monday. It has been a while. Today we give you the entire ball of wax. Ear candy from the band that would morph into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, then make a big comeback in the 2000’s thanks to Tom.

3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Stadehalle, Offenbach, Germany, November 16, 1976

We begin our Linda Ronstadt musical celebration with an early show recorded for the German television show, Rockpalast.

7:00 p.m. The Summer of Love, Volume 1: Various Artists

In the meantime, we continue on with our Summer of Love music as well this week. In volume one you’ll hear from Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Donovan, The Grass Roots and more!

It’s Monday, but it doesn’t have to suck. The music is great here in The Mermaid Lounge, and it’s also on 24/7 and is completely free of charge. And without commercial advertising. Just hit the button below.

Celebrate the Fourth With Songs About Being Free and Our New ‘Summer of Love Countdown’, Thursday, July 4, 2024

Good morning, freedom lovers! Should we truly be celebrating? Maybe not at this time, but we all know what we have to do and that’s all I’ll say in this venue. But every day is a good music day here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Fourth of July musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Free As A Bird: Various Artists

We start out the day with songs about being free, both politically and otherwise, with the Edgar Winter Group, Cream, Steve Winwood, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jesse Winchester, The Byrds, Dusty Springfield, Bob Dylan, Delaney & Bonnie, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Allen Toussaint, Chicago and more!

Before we begin, let’s dispel some musical misinformation. I often see the Summer of Love used in conjunction with 1969. That is incorrect. I think people make that association because of Woodstock. But the Summer of Love was actually in 1967. This is not a difference of opinion. This is a matter of historical fact. Full stop. Done. Now, we do have Summer of Love playlists already, but those are a bit different. This is a playlist of the biggest songs on the radio during the summer and into fall of 1967. The actual real Summer of Love. We’ll be focusing on the songs and artists from that musical time period over the next week or two.

We Motor Along With ‘The Psychedelic Express,’ Marvin Gaye and The Beatles on Thursday, April 25, 2024

We are careening toward the weekend again, and we’re taking ‘The Psychedelic Express’ today. Then it’s a Marvin Gaye ‘Spotlight’ feature and psychedelia from The Fab Four.

Here’s your psychedelic lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

You don’t need no stinkin’ tickets to ride on the psychedelic express with Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, The Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more! It’s five hours of mind-bending music!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye isn’t called The Prince of Soul for nothing. This brilliant singer-songwriter helped shape the Motown sound in the sixties, first as an in-house session player and later as a successful solo artist. He’s In The Spotlight this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles: Tripping The Light Fantastic

We close this psychedelic adventure with The Fab Four. It should be no surprise to anyone that The Beatles pioneered the psychedelic sound and embraced it before anyone else. We close the day with their contributions to the genre.

I’ll be laboring in hardware hell while The Music Mermaid joins you on your psychedelic journey this fine day. If you are a fan of the genre like me, you will not be disappointed. Best of all, we’re totally free and devoid of commercial interruption all day long.

A young Emmylou Harris serenades us from an iconic musical venue as we close out the programming today.

Remember, the train leaves the station promptly at nine. Be there or be square, as they say. We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge. No credit card or personal information ever required. Just hit the button below!

It’s Our ‘Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, The Association, and Tom Petty as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, Monday, February 26, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We are starting off the week with a rare EP on a Monday, but it’s a short month and we have to get this one in. We are also winding down on our Singer-Songwriter Series, saving the best for last. This week we introduce Tom Petty as our featured artist. Next week? It’s Lennon & McCartney.

Here’s your musical Monday:

9:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

One of two major sixties playlists airs today. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, Little Eva, The Everly Brothers, The Searchers, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bob Dylan, The Animals, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, The Turtles, Del Shannon, The Temptations, James Brown, Fontella Bass, The Box Tops, Blues Image, Booker T & The MG’s, The Four Tops, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Them, The Left Banke, Fats Domino and more!

4:00 p.m. The Association Live at The Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah, April 3, 1970

I love airing the old bands. It’s often tough to find ‘live’ performances but, if you persevere, you can find some. This is a great performance from The Salt Palace.

We’re winding down on this great series which has taken us through nearly a year. We’ve saved the best for the end. This week we feature Dr. Tom Petty, certainly the most prolific and consequential songwriter of his generation via The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys and his solo career. Every single song on this playlist is a Petty composition, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We’re in the Wayback Machine Heading for the Sixties, and We’ve Got Jackson Browne’s AOW, Thursday, January 25, 2024

Good morning, time travelers. We’re headed back to the early sixties today with ‘The Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, and we’ve also got some rare ‘live’ Hendrix.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

Personally speaking, the sixties and early seventies were the best of times in music. It is why I started the station to begin with. This EP features Del Shannon, Little Eva, The Drifters, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Walker Brothers, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, The Searchers, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Petula Clark, Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers, The Dave Clark Five, The Supremes, Harry Nilsson, The Band, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, Blind Faith, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, The Who, Bob Dylan, Tony Joe White, Barry McGuire, Fats Domino and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne’s Late For The Sky, his third studio album, is the first album in our ‘Happy 50th Birthday’ series of albums to open up the new year.

Yes, there’s no venue in the title because this show was held on a farm on the lower slope of the Haleakala volcano on a makeshift stage. The only audience were a few hundred Maui residents who heard the show was happening and showed up. These folks got to see a rare, little-known Hendrix performance. There’s a long story behind how this show came about and why it was so “secret” to begin with. It’s explained here much better than I could ever manage.

Today We’re Riding On ‘The Psychedelic Express’, Listening to Our AOW and Some Driving Songs, December 21, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We’re closing in on Christmas 2023 here and making plans for our 2024 roll-out. We hope you’ll continue listening over the holidays!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Truly one of our favorite genres here in The Mermaid Lounge. It was a wondrous time in music that even those who came after continued to emulate, as you will see by songs from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, among others. In addition, you’ll hear The Beatles (who, as always, led the way here) Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Byrds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Donovan, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Two Sides To Every Woman by Carlene Carter

We’re winding down on this great selection, so get on it! Our final airing will be sometime on Saturday.

7:00 p.m.  Drivin’ Songs: Various Artists

Another multi-artist playlist (a short one, this time) featuring songs not only about driving, but also songs that give you lead-foot while driving. This time, you’ll hear Golden Earring, The Eagles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Little Feat, Rare Earth, Bruce Springsteen, The Allman Brothers Band, Bob Dylan, The Pretenders and more!

We know this is not a time when most people relax. Everyone’s out playing Capitalism. But when you get the chance to kick your shoes off and sit back, we’re the place to be.

We Start a New Month With Dreaming, Fats & Dave and The Doors in The Spotlight on Friday, December 1, 2023

We’ve made it to Friday and we start the final month of the year with a bang! We’ve got our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP to start out, then we’ve got Fats Domino & Dave Bartholomew, and The Doors bring up the rear later.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

9:00 a.m. In Your Dreams: Various Artists

We start out the new month in a dream state with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Aerosmith, Crowded House, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, The Eurythmics, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Nanci Griffith, the Electric Prunes, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Mamas & The Papas, Jimmy Buffett, the Alan Parsons Project, the Allman Brothers Band, Supertramp, Randy Newman, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Widespread Panic, The Youngbloods, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, Patsy Cline, Joe Walsh, Bruce Springsteen, k.d. lang, Dusty Springfield and more.

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Fats Domino & Dave Bartholomew FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of our homage to two pioneers of rock n’ roll. Don’t miss it.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

To close out the programming tonight, we play the music of one of the pioneers of the psychedelic and acid rock sounds. They were only together for four years, but they made an amazing impact on music.

It’s Friday and we’ve made it. It’s going to be a dismal day here, with rain, but we can transcend that with great music. We’ve got it here.
