It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Stevie Ray Vaughan, James Cotton Live in New Orleans, and Our Album of The Week, December 21, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! I’m in the retail slave mines early today, but we leave you in good hands with great blues programming and the Open Stream handled by The Music Mermaid.

I don’t know what I can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said. We lost him too soon would be a cliche. Today we feature his music as both a solo artist and with Double Trouble. Perhaps the words of B.B. King say it best. When somebody stated that you have to be black to play the blues, B. B. King replied, “Tell that to Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This is the second airing of our Album of The Week, initially released in 1967. The album was then re-released by Columbia Records with Janis Joplin’s name on the cover after they took over Big Brother’s contract (as a result of the band’s huge success at the Monterey Pop Festival the same year).

7:00 p.m. The James Cotton Band Live at Antoine’s Night Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, July 1987 NEW!

To say that I’d have loved to be a fly on the wall for this one is an understatement. New Orleans is one of my favorite places on the planet. I was fortunate enough to visit the city many times on both business and pleasure, and the music was always the big draw for me (the food isn’t too shabby either). Joining Cotton for this performance is Matt “Guitar” Murphy (guitars), Luther Tucker (guitar), Calvin Jones (bass), Willie Smith (drums), and the legendary Pinetop Perkins on piano. James Cotton, of course, was on harp and vocals.

Born from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen (guitar/vocals) and Jack Cassady (bassist) created this great blues rock band. While other members have come and gone over the years, the stalwarts have always been these guys. In fact, they’ll be celebrating Jorma’s 80th birthday in with a live performance at Carnegie Hall on April 22, 2022. There’s something to be said for the longevity of this generation of musicians for sure. That’s why we’re here.

It was finally released just about a year after his death. It’s a great listen, and some propose it’s his best album. Tune it in.

The Beach Boys’ Smile album never really came to fruition. It was actually abandoned back in 1967. In 2011, The Smile Sessions was released…and in several forms. You can read about it in detail here. What we give you this week is one version and it’s the 19 songs that theoretically present what the final version of Smile would have been. It’s a great trip.

1:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s 65 Greatest Songs UPDATED!

A few days ago, the University of Florida posthumously awarded Tom Petty a Doctorate in Music, adding to his musical legend. I imagine that most people know this was an honor long deserved. (If you don’t, this is probably not the radio station you want to listen to.) Today we present our very subjective list of Petty’s best songs, not just with the Heartbreakers, but also with Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys, and as a solo artist. It has been updated and, guess what, if I were to do this over, it could be different.

If you are only familiar with Tom Petty’s “hits,” this is a good chance for you to step out and hear some of his lesser known songs. That’s why there are 65 of them.

This will be a fun day for Petty fans everywhere (and that will include me). The rest of the day is dedicated to wide Open Stream of continually rotating 27,000+ songs. And all of this is free because we’re not a business. We’re a music emporium.

We kick off today’s festivities with a new-to-the-lounge live SRV and Double Trouble concert from Carnegie Hall. There isn’t much I can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said, so I’ll let him speak for himself through his music.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rising Sons featuring Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder

Of course, there were more musicians in this band. You can see the complete list if you go back to Sunday’s entry. This band’s life may have been short-lived, but it spawned two of the most musically creative acts in popular music history, in my humble opinion.

7:00 p.m. Tedeschi-Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, Colorado, August 30, 2012

We close out the day’s programming with one sweet band. I don’t know about their marriage, but this is a musical marriage made in heaven and it’s a great concert.

There’s nothing like Chicago and the blues, that’s for sure. I made several trips out to the Windy City during a previous lifetime and made sure to frequent the blues clubs every time. Today you’ll hear Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Slim, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson and more!

This one is already crying out for update and extension. We’ll get there, but we kick off this playlist with nearly three hours of blues.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Greatest Hits by Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac

This is the second airing of our AOW, and it’s a great one. As I’ve said before, greatest hits collections do not often appear on our list (there are always exceptions), but his one belongs here. Not many people realize that Peter Green is a founding member of Fleetwood Mac, and that the Mac started out as a British blues-rock band.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

I remember my first trip to the House of Blues in New Orleans years ago and the painting of Taj Mahal on the box office wall. I’ve been hooked ever since. Taj Mahal, also known as Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Jr., is a blues musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo, guitar, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. He often gives a little world music flavor to the blues. You’ll love him if you haven’t heard him before.

We’re waiting on y’all. Germany, Italy, France, Russian Federation, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain…come on down and enjoy the tunes. Tuesday Bluesday is definitely a good day.

During the sixties, when the band came to be, it was a British blues-rock band led by a great guitarist named Peter Green. His version of Fleetwood Mac remains our favorite here in the lounge. We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Saturday is here. The weekend is upon (some of) us. Some of us have one more stint left, and that would be me. But you can be here with us in The Mermaid Lounge enjoying life free of charge.
