The Main Refrain is one of the finest albums ever made from someone many may never have heard of. Those of us who were listening to Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur, however, know Wendy Waldman because they introduced her to their followers. Fame may have eluded her over the years, but her contributions as a writer, singer and producer are immense. She remains one of the most well-respected singers of her generation among her peers. Linda Ronstadt appears on this album, and they combine their voices beautifully on The Eagle and The Owl. Pay attention, children.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2: Various Artists

Our monthly homage to the inspiration for this radio station with more than five uninterrupted hours of streaming. The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, The Guess Who, The Doors, The Who, Janis Joplin, Them, The Zombies, Jimi Hendrix, The Searchers and many others take a trip through The Mermaid Lounge today.

The Animals always had that gritty, bluesey sound. The band was formed in the early sixties in Newcastle upon Tyne. They moved to London in 1964. One of my favorite singers of all time was their frontman, Eric Burdon. This is a great playlist.

Afternoon Open Stream Monday

We stream 26,000+ songs all afternoon with some great Three-in-a-Row’s tossed in. You’ll hear Emmylou Harris, The Byrds The Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett, among others.

Jakob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter who also happens to be Bob Dylan’s son. He’s best known as the lead singer and primary songwriter for The Wallflowers, a band he formed in 1989. Prior to that he had a solo career, and was in some indie bands. You’ll love his stuff, people.

Good Morning, Music Lovers & Petty Fans Alike! We’ve got a great array of music on tap and — as you may have suspected — Wildflowers & All The Rest is our Album of The Week! It’s an amazing volume of work. I’ve already passed through once. The only question was how it would be presented.

We’ll do that in bursts, but we will have one airing in its complete form before the end of Tom Petty Month. We’ll also air the segments twice a week at various times.

Johnny Rivers, ,a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge. One of the best damned singers, songwriters, and record producers many will probably never know. His style encompassed rockabilly, folk, blues, and good old time rock n’ roll. You might want to tune this in.

7:00 p.m. That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists

This is one sweet playlist with Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Fats Domino, Roberta Flack, Jackie Wilson, The Marvelettes, The Supremes, and many more.

I saw Joni Mitchell live on her Court & Spark tour with Tom Scott & The LA Express. She was brilliant, and she was often not a pleasant soul on stage. Be careful not to clap at the wrong time. One of the most revered singer-songwriters of all time, and rightfully so.

Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper (the original lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears), and Stephen Stills lay it down. This one is also new to us even though it’s been on my hard drive for years. (Hey, there’s still a ton of shit to go. Okay?)

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Unchained by Johnny Cash

It’s only fitting that Tom Petty and his bandmates play a role in this great album. Tom Petty had more credibility in traditional country music than any other rocker on the planet. This one won Cash a Grammy.

This isn’t just country from Mr. Cash. It’s more like country rock as he’s backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and produced by Rick Rubin! Although there are some Cash compositions on this album, he also focuses on covers, including Petty’s Southern Accents. This won Johnny Cash a Grammy.

Once again, we play you the five new releases from the upcoming Wildflowers package, which will be released on October 16.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday! Today, We Have Dylan & The Heartbreakers On Tour, Janis Joplin Live, and Little Feat, October 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a great line-up!

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (1986)

This was recorded over two nights on part of Dylan’s True Confessions tour. Tom Petty credits Dylan with teaching The Heartbreakers the importance of spontaneity on stage. These two guys were just great together. It’s amazing how many people Tom Petty was able to mesh with musically. That’s the sign of an artist comfortable in his own skin.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting For Columbus by Little Feat

Again, some of the best live music ever pressed onto vinyl. Little Feat defied definition. And I will say it again: They are the most underrated band in rock music history.
