7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Buddy Guy

Buddy Guy’s career started back in 1953. Since then, this great blues guitarist and singer has infuenced several generations of blues players. At 86, Guy is still performing live and is in the midst of his 2023 tour. Tonight he’s In the Spotlight.

Good morning, music lovers! As you know, we keep it simple here on Sundays. It’s our album of the week selection and an extended playlist as a rule. Read on to find out what’s on tap today!

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Prodigal Son by Ry Cooder NEW!

Released in 2018, this was Ry Cooder’s first studio album in six years and his sixteenth release overall. Although he has never lost his activist voice, this album returns him to the gospel-infused spirit of his early years. Without a doubt, this singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is a Mermaid Lounge favorite. It should also be noted that Linda Ronstadt considers Ry Cooder to be the finest guitarist she has ever heard or worked with. We here in the lounge respect Linda’s impeccable musical taste.

4:00 p.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Carly Simon began singing with her sisters in 1963, but when the band broke up she began a successful solo career. In 1971, she released her self-titled album which won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and spawned her first Top 10 single, That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be. During the seventies, she had a string of 13 Top 40 U.S. hits and four Gold-certified singles. Tonight she becomes our featured singer-songwriter.

This was a great performance from what is considered one of the best road bands on the planet (actually, one of the very best bands on the planet). There’s nothing like seeing TPATH live (which I had the good fortune to do four times). TPATH is one of our official House Bands (along with The Beatles). Tonight we’ve got them live from the Vic Theatre in Chicago.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Steady As She Goes by Hot Tuna

We’ve got the great blues-rock vibe of Hot Tuna ad mid-afternoon, with a 2011 release that was their first studio album after a long list of live performance albums. Jorma Kaukonen wrote six of the songs on this album.

7:00 p.m. Tedeschi Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks, Morrison, CO, August 30, 2012

The biggest, baddest blues-rock band in town with one of the all-time great guitarists in Derek Trucks. This great band, helmed by Susan Tedeschi, is known for its high-energy live performances. Another one that’s not to be missed today.

Released in 2011, this great blues-rock album was Hot Tuna’s first studio album after a string of live albums, and came after Jorma Kaukonen released his own solo album on Red House Records. When the label showed an interest in a new Hot Tuna album, Kaukonen sprang into action. It was recorded at Levon Helm’s studio (The Band), and he used the same approach that the Jefferson Airplane used in producing their albums. Kaukonen contributed six songs to this album. Before there was Live Aid or Farm Aid, there was the Concert for Bangladesh. This first-of-its-kind gathering of musical stars was the conception of George Harrison and Ravi Shankar to benefit the refugees of East Pakistan following the Bangladesh Liberation War-related genocide. Joining Harrison and Shankar were Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and Badfinger.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Venus And Mars by Paul McCartney & Wings NEW!

This was the fourth studio album by Wings and McCartney’s sixth solo album after the breakup of The Beatles in 1970. It was a follow-up to the great Band On The Run album, and the first to be released on Capitol as opposed to Apple Records. It was recorded in London, New Orleans and Los Angeles, and released in May of 1975. It also resulted in the launch of a massive worldwide tour. I damned near wore this vinyl out, and my favorite song? Call Me Back Again, hands down.

Our big folk music extravaganza is back! We’ve got some classic folk artists as well as bands and artists who have embraced the musical genre and done their part to keep its spirit alive.
