One of the greatest supergroups of all times was also all female, although only handful of music critics refer to Trio as a supergroup. They definitely are. Three powerhouses of country, rock and country rock united for a glorious period of time and produced some amazing music together. Today we have the final verisons, the outtakes and the alternative versions for you.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Crosby, Stills & Nash by Crosby, Stills & Nash NEW!

One of the great musical supergroups released this album in May of 1969, and it elevated them to instant stardom. This would be the only album released before they added Neil Young to the group. It spawned two Top 40 hits in Marrakesh Express and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (for Judy Collins), but every song on this album became a CSN classic. It also shifted the music world from strictly blues-based music played on loud guitars and introduced the folk-rock sound. They opened the door for others playing the same genre.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The second volume focuses on the mid-to-late sixties with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Roy Orbison, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, B. Tonight we put Steve Winwood In the Spotlight and, yes, he will eventually get his turn as our singer-songwriter. Another Mermaid Lounge favorite here. You’ll hear his music from his days with Traffic, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group and his solo career tonight.

As I’m learning, many people don’t know who the I-Threes are. They are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths and they are the most influential female band in Reggae and Ska who provided the background voices for Bob Marley & The Wailers. They also recorded albums individually, so today, we enlighten those who have never before heard them sing. It’s a treat.

7:00 p.m. Blind Faith Live at The Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara, CA, August 16, 1969

Blind Faith were an English supergroup featuring Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. They weren’t around for very long, only for one album and one extended summer tour. We’ve got one of those performances from that tour for you today. (I’m sure that the Earl Warren Showgrounds were used for more than music, but the thought of a psychedelic rock band performing at a venue named after a Supreme Court judge makes me chuckle.)

We’re here no matter how damned tired we are because we have The Music Mermaid and she is large and in charge. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming) totally free to the listening public. Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Brings Creedence Clearwater Revival With Our New AOW and Volume Two of The ‘Sixties Rotation’ EPs, November 27, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! The sun is already out here and we’ve got an easy day going today with some great music from the first generation of classic rockers with Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ for five uninterrupted hours this afternoon.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival NEW!

CCR, as they are popularly known, was a force in 1969, releasing three albums. Green River was one of those releases, and it gave us some great songs including the hits Bad Moon Rising and Green River, which both peaked at No. 2 on the charts. The songs Lodi and Commotion were also fan favorites, although they didn’t reach the chart status of the first two. John Fogerty was the creative force behind CCR, and he disliked the long, acid-infused jams popular at the time. CCR bucked the norm and preferred the tightly structured roots music that would actually make them famous. We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we believe they’ve never made a bad song.

Here we are at the second phase of our Sixties absorption, which mostly focuses on the mid-to-late musical portion of that decade. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins NEW!

And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

We feature Nanci Griffith as this week’s singer-songwriter whose musical style encompassed folk and country, and what she called “folkabilly.” She was a frequent performer on Austin City Limits and, although she suffered from severe writer’s block from 2004 through 2009, she remains one of the most respected singer-songwriters in popular music. She often recorded duets with others, including Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Don McLean, Jimmy Buffett, and Willie Nelson. You can read more about Nanci Griffith here.
