We’re going to kick off the day with the man who is rightfully seen as a pioneer of Reggae music, Bob Marley. Widely recognized as the premier Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician, he and the Wailers developed a unique sound of their own by fusing together elements of Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Songbird by Eva Cassidy FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of Eva Cassidy’s Songbird album. She had a beautiful voice that many people still have yet to experience. She is now in our standard rotation, but this album will give you the immersion experience. Enjoy before we choose a new album tomorrow.

6:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Friends Pay Tribute to J.J. Cale

Eric Clapton and his friends pay tribute to one of the great singer-songwriters of any generation, J.J. Cale, the man who pioneered what is called the Tulsa Sound, which fused blues, swamp music, rockabilly, country and jazz. Although he avoided the limelight, artists like Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Neil Young believe he was one of the most important musicl figures in popular music.

The Uprising Tour was Bob Marley’s final tour and the biggest European tour for that year, beginning in Zurich and ending at The Stanley Theatre (33 cities in Europe; 5 in the U.S.). Before September of the following year, Bob Marley would be dead from melanoma.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan

This is the final airing of Dylan’s first album of original material since 2012’s Tempest. Tomorrow when you awaken, there will be a new selection.

This great live album features Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George (Little Feat), John Hammond and Freebo at Ultrasonic Studios in New York. It was recorded and broadcast on WLIR-FM. We have it here for you today.

There can be no denying this man’s contribution to the birth of rock n’ roll. I’m not sure anybody was playing this stuff before him. I know Bill Haley & The Comets are given the credit for depositing the first rock n’ roll song on the charts, but if you listen back to the black artists, you have to know that is where all of this began and where everyone’s inspiration came from.

Another Early Morning Lesson From The Mermaid Lounge: 12/3/2020

Good Morning, Students! Here we are again with a lesson in rock n’ roll history from the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge. We’re not as active as some days today, but we do pick and choose our subjects here. There are a lot of people we don’t give a flying fuck about, like Madonna. JayZ. Lady GaGa. Kanye West, the waste of musical space, and so on.

And now, today’s lesson:

December 3, 1955: Elvis Presley’s first release on RCA Victor Records was announced. The first two were purchased from Sam Phillips at Sun Records, Mystery Train and I Forgot To Remember To Forget.

December 3, 1961: Brian Epstein makes his first pitch to become The Beatles’ manager. Although the meeting goes well, there is no decision on this day.

December 3, 1965: Keith Richards cuts it close. He steps on a microphone cable and is electrocuted and knocked unconscious during a Stones concert in Sacramento. After a short break, Richards is able to come back and play.

Also on this day, The Beatles release the album Rubber Soul and the single Nowhere Man in the UK.

December 3, 1966: Paul Revere & The Raiders had their sixth Billboard Top 40 hit enter the Top 100. Good Thing will climb the charts and eventually reach #4, It stays on the charts for ten weeks.

December 3, 1968: It’s a Banner Day for Gold Records: The Grass Roots song Midnight Confessions is certified Gold on this day; and the albums Aretha Now by Aretha Franklin and Fresh Cream by Cream are certified Gold as well.

The Montreux Casino caught fire and burned during a show by Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention. The event is immortalized in the song Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Deep Purple was supposed to begin working on their Machine Head album the following day.

December 3, 1976: Bob Marley narrowly escapes an assassination attempt. Seven gunmen sprayed bullets into his Kingston, Jamaica, home where he and the Wailers were rehearsing. Marley had become unpopular in some circles due to his influence over some local politicians. He moved to Florida a short time after the incident.

December 3, 2003: The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gave Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers a Diamond Award, markng the sale of 10 million copies of their Greatest Hits album in the U.S.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat NEW!

Again, the most underrated band in rock music because they defy definition. Little Feat is an eclectic combination of rock and roll, blues, boogie, country, folk, soul, New Orleans R&B, and swamp music. Waiting for Columbus was recorded over seven live performances during 1977. The venues were The Rainbow Theatre in London, and George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

Although I generally don’t give a shit what critics think, it should be duly noted that critics widely believe this is one of the finest live albums in music history. And for once, I agree with their position.

Let’s get with the program, America. Everyone else has. Tune us in. This is a great day to start.

The Wailers were initially formed when self-taught musician Hubert Winston McIntosh (Peter Tosh) met the singers Neville Livingston (Bunny Wailer), and Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) in 1963. The Beacon Theater show in 1976 was part of the Rastaman Vibration Tour.

3:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones  NEW!

Let It Bleed is the eighth British and tenth American album made by The Rolling Stones, released in December 1969, shortly after the band’s North American tour. There was a lot of turmoil in the band during the recording of Let It Bleed. Brian Jones was in the midst of a drug meltdown, and was fired during the  making of this album. He was replaced by Mick Taylor. Jones would die about a month after being fired.

Bob Marley was born in Nine Mile, British Jamaica on February 6, 1945, and began his musical career back in 1963. He is considered a pioneer in Reggae music, and developed his unique style by fusing elements of Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady. Marley helped to bring about the global acceptance of Reggae.
