Sam Cooke is back for his second spin as this week’s featured singer-songwriter. An amazingly talented and respected artist, Sam Cooke was often called “The King of Soul.”

This was Young’s solo Journey Through The Past tour as he played in front of his native countrymen in Toronto. It’s a great performance and we’ve got it to close out the day’s programming.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy Buffett NEW!

Affectionately known as the Mayor of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett passed away on September 1. There was a lot of mystery surrounding his health prior to this, but it is now known that he passed form Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. Jimmy Buffett was a hell of a ride. If you’ve ever seen him ‘live’ you know his shows were a blast. He was a guy who took music seriously, but had a good time doing it and his ‘Parrotheads’ did as well.

I saw him at Fenway Park in Boston in the early 2000’s, the first time I’d ever seen a musical act at Fenway. It was unbelievable. I took a Buffett shamer with me to the show. Even he had a blast and confessed he went out and bought this very album after. This is as good an album as anyone has released. There isn’t a song we don’t like, and it was on our list from the beginning. I moved it up. Circumstances called for that.

This was the nineteenth studio album by The Kinks, released in the U.S. in 1981 (but in 1982 in Europe). Although it’s what some might call an ‘unremarkable’ album, it did spawn three single releases, and it’s always a treat when Crissie Hynde shows up for your album (she had a thing going with Ray Davies a the time).

Here’s a guy who doesn’t get the attention he should. Most people know him as the leader of Electric Light Orchestra, but Jeff Lynne is more than that. He’s one of the most prolific singer-songwriters on the planet. Before ELO, there was a sixties band called The Move, which recorded and released the original version of Do Ya. He was a founding member of The Traveling Wilburys. And finally, he’s a record producer who worked with both George Harrison and Tom Petty over his long career. Tonight we introduce him as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

For most people it’s a long weekend where we’ll celebrate our alleged freedom (although all I see from the GOP are rights being rolled back). All that propaganda aside, it’s absolutely not propaganda that we play the best music on the planet totally free with no commercial interruption on a 24/7 schedule. Give us a shot.

Although Karla Bonoff has released several really wonderful albums, she is best known as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation. Linda Ronstadt feasted off Karla’s work, including Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, Lose Again, Trouble Again and others. Others who have sung Karla’s songs include Wynnona Judd, Lynn Anderson, and Bonnie Raitt (an amazing rendition of Home for one). Tonight, we get to hear Karla sing her compositions herself.

Joan Baez is a legend in these here parts. Through sixty years of performing, she has consistently remained a voice for social justice. During that time, she has released more than thirty albums. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she has released songs in at least six other languages. Although she’s regarded mostly as a folk singer, her musical style over the years has expanded to include pop, folk rock, country and gospel. Although a songwriter herself, she prefers to interpret the music of others, including Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Jackson Browne, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, among others. Today she’s in the spotlight where she belongs.

8:00 p.m. The Best of Ringo Starr, Drummer NEW!

We spent some time on this one because we think it’s important in a musical sense. Long before the Beatles employed Ringo, he was already respected in musical circles as a drummer for Rory Storm & The Hurricanes. The Beatles, in fact, lured him away and did so for a reason. Drummers around the globe respect Ringo. He has his own style, his own swing and his own sound, and he’s not concerned with drawing attention to himself with long, protracted drumming solos. Rather, Ringo gives the song what it needs. He’s part of its fabric, and that’s what talented drummers do. We combed through articles to put this playlist together, amassing the list from other drummers and musical artists. It includes Beatle songs from the start to The End, the only drum solo Ringo ever played as a Beatle.

Here we are on the brink of another weekend and, for those who celebrate, Happy Easter, Happy Passover or Happy Ramadan, as they all converge. We’re here with some great music 24/7 at no cost to the listening world. There is also no commercial advertising. We’re in it for the music.

During the seventies, she had a string of 13 Top 40 U.S. hits and four Gold-certified singles. Tonight she becomes our featured singer-songwriter.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Carly Simon NEW!

This one has been on my ‘to do’ list for a while and I’ve finally brought it to fruition here. Carly Simon began singing with her sister, Lucy, back in 1963 and strung together a bunch of great hits during the seventies like Anticipation, That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be, and You’re So Vain. While Mick Jagger appears on You’re So Vain and everyone assumed it was about him, Carly Simon actually revealed that it was about Warren Beatty.

We’re just getting warmed up for the weekend here in The Mermaid Lounge, so do give us a shot. We’re totally free 24/7 and we do not run commercial advertising.
