There is no question that we have two luminaries of the folk movement on this album as Joan Baez pays tribute to Bob Dylan. They first met in 1961 and collaborated on music for several years before becoming intimately involved. Even after the relationship ended they continued to make music together and have remained friends over the years. Dylan continues to tour, while Joan Baez has formally retired from the road. We will soon have Spotlight features for both.

It’s a day of rest, and there’s no better way to kick back than with some really great music. That’s what you get here. No commercial interruptions. No overly talkative DJs. Nope. Not here. Eva Cassidy was a woman of extraordinary talent with a beautiful voice, and she died far too soon for most people to even know about her. ‘we here learned about her posthumously from a friend. This album is a really interesting album for its time. This kind of album is commonplace now, but it wasn’t so common at the time of its release. It’s a collection of her rehearsal tapes and some live performances that was released seven years after her death. But it’s not just a mere collection of songs thrown together. Give it a listen.

Speaking of those echoes, this was Linda Ronstadt as she began her meteoric rise, just after the release of Heart Like A Wheel, and in one of the greatest music venues in popular music history. This was a starting point for many artists.

Yes, it’s true. This is the very first time we put The Who In the Spotlight here in The Mermaid Lounge. I confess a love-hate relationship with The Who, although I have long been a fan of their music. I saw them back in the day at Boston Garden. It was the night that Keith Moon collapsed on his drum set and the show had to be rescheduled. We saw them again and they were great. Moon would pass away not long after that. I am happy I saw them once, but I am thoroughly ambivalent about seeing them live ever again. In spite of that, this is a great playlist of their best stuff, and it’s formidable.

3:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at My Father’s Place, Roslyn, New York, November 28,1976

We’ve got a band here that helped pioneer the marriage between country and rock playing at a legendary venue. My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel opened in 1971 and “created a scene that would influence music for decades to come,” according to the New York Times. They were spot on.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Guy Clark

I remember seeing this guy one very cold, snowy night as my friends and I were freezing our asses off running round Harvard Square in Cambridge getting stoned. We were freezing and one of the greatest music venues, Passim’s Coffee House, was open and serving stuff that was warm. We went in. The cover wasn’t expensive, so we took a table. And when Guy Clark came out, someone we’d never heard before, we had our minds completely blown. He’s been a favorite ever since, and is certainly one of the greatest singer-songwriters I’ve ever experienced.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Southern Accents by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers NEW!

Thirty-seven years ago yesterday, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released their sixth studio album, which was considered a failure at least by the critics (not the fans). According to at least one critic, it was envisioned as a concept album that was “weighted down by its own ambitions.” When one looks at the songs cut from the album, you have to wonder why that decision was made, I must admit. Still, it’s The Heartbreakers, and it’s an album with several great songs, three of which were co-written with Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, including Don’t Come Around Here No More. But my favorite song on the album remains Rebels.

And then, there’s water…in the title, lyrics, or both. Water, a valuable resource that covers 71% of the planet we live on, is more than worthy of it’s own EP. And we’ve got it here. Shawn Colvin is one of those amazing singer-songwriters who has, somehow, flown under much of the radar out there for many years. She is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song, Sunny Came Home, but that’s not all she’s accomplished in her career. You can read more about Shawn Colvin right here. And best of all, if you don’t know much about her music, you can tune it in tonight and see for yourself.

In spite of her incredibly successful solo career and her position as the Queen of Rock during the 70’s, Linda Ronstadt always preferred singing with others and dreamed of being in a girl group. She finally achieved that when she joined up with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for the Trio albums. Here you’ll hear her sing with J. D. Souther, Randy Newman Ry Cooder, Hoyt Axton, Wendy Waldman, Neil Young, Ann Savoy, Paul Simon, Rosemary Clooney, Aaron Neville, Maria Muldaur and more. And you’ll hear her as lead vocalist, background singer, and harmony singer.
