8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Nina Simone NEW!

Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist whose musical style encompassed a variety of styles including classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm & blues and pop. Born into poverty, she started playing piano at the age of three or four, and initially aspired to be a concert pianist. When she was 12, she played piano at her local church. When her parents took seats at the front, they were asked to move to the back of the church to make room for white people. She refused to play until they were moved back to the front. She used her talent to advance civil rights throughout her career. You can read more about Nina Simone here.

Tune us in here. We’re playing music 24/7 with no commercial interruption all day long. We always play more Open Stream than programming. And did I mention we’re free?

It’s Sunday, So We Keep It Simple With Edgar Winter and Our AOW, Then We Turn the Whole Thing Over To the Women of Music With Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, February 12, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! Your weekend is winding down and mine is just beginning as we start off this fine Sunday morning in the church of music known as The Mermaid Lounge. We’ve got some great stuff on tap for you today!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Brother Johnny by Edgar Winter NEW!

Edgar Winter’s heartfelt 17-song tribute to his brother, killer bluesman Johnny Winter, garnered him a 2023 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album just this past week at the age of 76. The Winter brothers are legends in the classic rock arena and, along with Bonnie Raitt (who won this year at the age of 73), just go to prove that the generation of musicians who inspired this radio station have real staying power.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

We Are at The Week’s End and We’re All About The Women Today With Bonnie Raitt, Bobbie Gentry and Carole King. It’s Friday, February 10, 2023.

Good morning, music lovers across the globe! We’ve made it to Friday and it’s a Ladies Day Only with the programming today (but not all the stream) and with good reason. Read on for details!

Here’s Friday’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bonnie Raitt UPDATED!

Today we celebrate Bonnie Raitt’s eleventh Grammy, won just earlier this week in what even she considered a stunning upset. It was for Song of the Year, winning for the first time as a composer for the song Just Like That from her latest album. She’s not only a great singer and songwriter, she’s a badass slide guitarist. Winning at the age of 73 proves that the generation of artists we built this station around has staying power. We’ve updated the playlist as well to include our favorite newer songs by Bonnie.

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Bobbie Gentry FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Bobbie Gentry as our featured singer-songwriter this week. She was an amazing songwriter who just wanted to write songs for others to sing, but it didn’t quite work out that way. She charted 11 singles before she moved into what we consider early retirement in the late seventies. She never wanted the limelight, but her unique talents changed her path for a time.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Carole King

This evening we celebrate Carole King, who is not only in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but also in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her list of compositions has got to be more than a mile long. On February 9, Carole King turned 81 years young, and today is the 52nd anniversary of the release of her seminal album Tapestry.

Every month is Woman’s month here in The Mermaid Lounge, but you can expect a little more focus as we move into March and International Women’s Month. We’re giving you a preview here. We’re totally free 24/7 with no commercial advertising. As we continue to say, it’s all about the music.

It’s Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP, the Final Airing of Our AOW, and Bobbie Gentry as the New Featured Singer-Songwriter for The Upcoming Week, February 4, 2023

Good morning, Music Lovers! We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge keeping warm while the weather outside is at -10 with a howling wind. We’ve got the stuff to keep you warm if you live in these parts, or out in the western part of Massachusetts where it’s even a bit more extreme!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

We’re back again this month to feature the great artists who took up residence in Laurel Canyon and banded together to make the sounds heard ’round the world. Together they forged what is now known as country-rock. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Gram Parsons, Carole King, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing for The Byrds’ debut album, an album that challenged the chart dominance of the British Invasion groups. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Bobbie Gentry NEW!

Bobbie Gentry was an enigma. She was a brilliant singer-songwriter who shunned the limelight. From day one, all she ever wanted to do was write songs for others to sing. It didn’t quite work out that way as she charted 11 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and four on the United Kingdom Top 40. Ode To Billie Joe, a Southern Gothic narrative, shot her to stardom in 1967 as it rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for four weeks. She was also one of the first female artists to compose and produce her own material. People say she simply disappeared. She didn’t. She simply did not want to be found. She retired to quiet solitude. But her musical legacy lives on.

Come on, people. It’s officially the weekend and we’ve got great music on 24/7 uninterrupted by commercial advertising and all completely free to you. Your money’s no good here. All you need is a free tab and to push the button below. We don’t follow you because we don’t have anything to sell you.

Midweek Begins With Our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP, Then Moves to Jackson Browne and Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue Tour, Wednesday, January 4, 2023

Good morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a strong midweek lineup for you today as we kick it all off with those sweet Laurel Canyon sounds that fused country and rock. From there we move on to Jackson Browne and Dylan.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Laurel Canyon was a creative breeding ground for two generations of musicians as they pioneered the sounds of country-rock. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Carole King, James Taylor, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Jackson Browne

Today we give Jackson Browne his second airing as our featured singer-songwriter. He spent a fair amount of time hanging in Laurel Canyon honing his craft.

8:00 p.m. Bob Dylan, Live in ’75: The Rolling Thunder Revue

Bringing up the rear are ‘live’ selections from Bob Dylan’s iconic Rolling Thunder Revue Tour. Throughout the year we’ll also be airing individual shows.

Come on, people. Get on the bandwagon. We’re totally free. This is a labor of musical love. I promise. Your money is no good here in The Mermaid Lounge.

One Day Away From the Weekend With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ Multi-Artist EP and Carole King’s Final Airing as Singer-Songwriter, Friday, December 9, 2022

We are one day away from the official start of the weekend. Of course, some of us will toil in retail hell for one more day tomorrow, but we’re getting closer. We’ve got a lot of wide Open Stream today with some excellent programming tossed in for good measure.

Here’s your musical journey for today:

11:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Stories about the road, the air, the sea, and going places from Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Joan Baez, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Carole King

Today we bid a fond farewell to Carole King as our featured Singer-Songwriter, a woman whose music has been both an inspiration and a musical career builder. Tomorrow we welcome the late, great (and often troubled) Warren Zevon.

Before, in between and after we’ve got some great wide Open Stream, which has recently been significantly bolstered. This is not the place to detail that, but I will be writing a separate blog post on that very soon, so stay tuned! We’ve added some great artists we’ve been working on and bolstered the content of many others!

And Boom. It’s Monday. We’ve Got ‘Live’ Kinks, Our ‘Money Honey’ Playlist, and Carole King. And Plenty of Open Stream, December 5, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists. (And haters of Monday mornings.) We cannot flirt with time and make this another day, but we can help you get through this one with some good music.

Here’s today’s musical mashup:

11:00 a.m. The Kinks Live at The Hippodrome Theatre, London, UK, July 14, 1974 NEW!

This is a brand new one to us here in The Mermaid Lounge. As I said, we shop on a bunch of venues (of which Amazon and Apple are not part) and we have access to some cool stuff once in a while. This will be an experience we have together as we’ve not had the time to preview this one.

3:00 p.m. Money, Honey: Various Artists

This one could easily become an EP. Along with love and heartache, money and wealth are popular topics for the rockers. But we try to resist making every single topic an EP and will probably settle for a volume two so we can spread the wealth. At any rate, you will hear Elvis Presley, the Guess Who, The Beatles, Warren Zevon, Monty Python (yes, that Monty Python), Tom Petty, Tom Waits, The Byrds, Slim Harpo, Rosanne Cash, Albert King, Tom Rush, The Wallflowers, Allen Toussaint, Chuck Berry, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Laura Nyro and more!

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Carole King

This is our second airing of this week’s featured Singer-Songwriter, and a brilliant one at that. We will have one more airing of this later in the week. Time TBD.

We begin yet another work week as we mosey through the month of December and head for a new year. But we still have the (ugh) holidays to get through. I suppose if I didn’t work in retail, I may feel differently about them. But I digress. Did I mention that we’re totally free of charge? That’s one thing you won’t have to worry about. Paying for your music. We realize we have limitations compared to Spotify and others, but this is radio, and radio is where you don’t exactly know what song is coming next. Reminds me of my youth laying in the driveway with my friends listening to my old transistor. Good times.
