Jeff Lynne takes his final spin as this week’s featured singer-songwriter, and we will miss him. We give you his music as the founder of Electric Light Orchestra, and as a founding member of The Traveling Wilburys, the greatest supergroup ever. Tomorrow, we’ll introduce a brand new artist to carry the torch!

12:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Chuck Berry

Speaking of founding fathers, this guy is one of the founding fathers of rock n’ roll, baby. John Lennon once said if you could give rock n’ roll a different name, it would be Chuck Berry. Mr. Lennon should know, in fact, and today we put Chuck Berry In the Spotlight.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Cow Palace, Daly City, CA, December 31, 1973

The Brothers give us a New Year’s Eve concert to be remembered at The Cow Palace just outside of San Francisco. It’s just what you’d expect from one of the greatest blues-rock bands on the planet.

Some artists have long careers that span decades. Others make an impact in a short period of time. Bill Withers made the most of his 18-year career, winning three Grammy Awards and being nominated for six others.

On This Keep-It-Simple Sunday, We’ve Got Our AOW by Buffalo Springfield and ‘The Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, May 21, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! As you know, we keep it simple on Sundays with plenty of wide Open Stream, but we do have a great new AOW and our original sixties rotation.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Buffalo Springfield by Buffalo Springfield NEW!

Although Buffalo Springfield wasn’t satisfied with this album, recorded in the summer of 1966 at Gold Star Studios, this was a groundbreaking album in many respects. Five of the songs were written by a guy named Neil Young, but he only sang lead on one of those. Richie Furay sang lead on the rest. Their first release from the album did not catch on nationally, but did make the Top 40 in Los Angeles during the month of August. However, by December, Stephen Stills’ For What It’s Worth became a national hit. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Aside from Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, the band was rounded out by Bruce Palmer (bass guitar) and Dewey Martin (drums, backing vocals).

Our first sixties extended playlist with five uninterrupted hours of music from the early-to-mid sixties (although I am sure some songs from the latter part of that decade slipped in). When he first started out, he was called “Little” Stevie Wonder because he was just eleven years old when he signed his first contract with Tamla Records, and just thirteen years old when his first No. 1 hit, Fingertips, was released. Wonder is widely recognized as a pioneer and major influencer in many musical styles, including rhythm & blues, pop, soul, gospel, funk and jazz. Sunday Brings Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” as Our AOW, and the ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, December 11, 2022

It’s a Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge with the threat of what we call a ‘wintry mix’ in the air. That’s when the weather people hedge their bets because they can’t figure out if it’s going to be snow or rain or both. I’m hedging my bets with a nice day indoors listening to some great music!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat NEW!

This was Little Feat’s third studio album, released in 1973, and certainly became a landmark for the band. The title song would go a long way toward establishing the band’s great signature sound. Little Feat also added the great guitarist Paul Barrere and percussionist Sam Clayton. Bassist Kenny Gradney was also added to replace Roy Estrada. It signaled a change of the band’s sound, moving them toward New Orleans R & B and funk.This lineup would endure until Lowell George’s death in 1979 and the band’s subsequent breakup.

This is the Grand Kahuna of our R & B/soul playlists which is all encompassing, and not just dedicated to Motown artists.
