It’ll Be a Better Monday With Mudcrutch Madness, Fats Domino, and Some ‘Live’ CCR Bringing Up the Rear, July 11, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We haven’t had a Mudcrutch Monday Madness for far too long now, so that’s how we’ll kick off the day, followed by Fats Domino In the Spotlight, and ‘live’ CCR later!

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. MUDCRUTCH MONDAY MADNESS!

Today’s madness is the full catalogue. Just over two hours of every song Mudcrutch ever made before they morphed into our House Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This is the band that left Gainesville for L.A. all those years ago. In 2008, Petty would reunite the band with it’s original members, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Randall Marsh, and Tom Leadon, to great success.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Fats Domino

The question remains: Did Fats Domino invent rock n’ roll? You know, nobody can say for sure. Rock n’ Roll had its own group of ‘founding parents’ as I like to call it, and surely Fats Domino is high up on that list. One thing is for sure, nobody can definitively say he wasn’t the first guy to play that music.

Speaking of bands with a unique sound, this band of brothers definitely qualifies. You instantly know who’s singing that song when you hear it. Four guys from Berkeley who sound like they just came out of the Bayou.

No doubt about it. Monday’s suck. Every week I’m eternally grateful that Sunday and Monday are my weekend days. Somehow, it makes the rest of the week go faster. I know. It’s all psychological, but it works for me. In the meantime, if you work somewhere where you can multitask, grab yourself some ear buds, pull up a tab, and tune us in. It’ll make Monday oh so tolerable.

Good Morning, Sixties Veterans! Today we’ve got one of the very first playlists we ever made, and the very first one we turned into an extended playlist, ‘The Original Sixties Rotation.’

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Luxury Liner by Emmylou Harris NEW!

Emmylou Harris’ fourth studio album is truly a thing of beauty. It is absolutely one of my all-time favorite albums with not one singular inferior song from start to finish. It was her second consecutive number one country album on the Billboard charts. She sings the songs of Gram Parsons, Chuck Berry, the Louvins, Rodney Crowell, Susanna Clark, for starters. The album also includes the cover of Townes Van Zandt’s haunting Pancho & Lefty which, subsequently, would become his best-known composition. You couldn’t ask for a better bunch of artists for help, with Nicolette Larson (duet vocals), Dolly Parton, and Fayssoux Starling providing duet and backing vocals, and a laundry list of brilliant musicians including members of The Hot Band, Albert Lee and James Burton on electric guitars, Hank DiVito on pedal steel, Glen D. Hardin on keyboards, and more. Just wow.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman NEW!

This is the first solo album by Gregg Allman, the leader, songwriter and main vocalist of the venerated Allman Brothers Band. In fact, he worked on his debut album while working simultaneously on the Allman’s Brothers And Sisters album. It was released on Capricorn Records in October of 1973. The album resulted in two singles, Midnight Rider and Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing. Midnight Rider was also covered by the Allman Brothers Band, but Gregg Allman’s version remains my favorite.

3:00 p.m. Down In New Orleans: Various Artists

Saving this great playlist for Mardi Gras week is a thing of the past. It should be played more frequently than once a year. Not only will you hear music that is central to the culture of New Orleans, but you’ll hear from some mainstream artists who were born in New Orleans. You’ll hear the music of The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas. We usually dust this playlist off once a year, but that is a thing of the past. Today, we move it into the mainstream after a bit of an updating. It not only features authentic New Orleans music, but highlights the musicians who were born in Louisiana, like Lucinda Williams, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Irma Thomas (The Soul Queen of New Orleans), Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida & The Bon Temps, Boozoo Chavis, and many more. Chance Bushman and The Daywalkers are local NOLA artists whose music I had the pleasure of hearing during a 2014 trip. The Boogaloo Swamis, oddly enough, were a band we fell in love with here in Boston at a local place called Johnny D’s in Somerville, Massachusetts. We hope you enjoy this extended playlist.

We thought we’d make all of the programming a celebration of New Orleans today, and we could think of nobody more deserving of the Spotlight than Dr. John, also known as The Nitetripper. Dr. John was a New Orleans legend whose career spanned decades. He was musically active from the 1950’s up until his death in 2019. His musical style combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk and R & B.

Before, in between and after our programming, you’ll be treated to our wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. We stream 24/7 at no charge to you whatsoever.
