Because it was one of the last opportunities I had to see Mudcrutch for the first time ever, and Tom Petty for the fifth. And, by the way, they blew the doors off the Boston House of Blues with Hungry No More, my favorite Mudcrutch song. What’s not to be upset about here?

This was a fun one to put together. It’s all about the man in the mack, a lonely woman named Eleanor Rigby, an ode to Dear Prudence, the barber shaving another customer on Penny Lane, a serial killer with a hammer, the walrus, the eggman, the taxman, Bungalow Bill, a racoon named Rocky, a lady trying to make ends meet, a Nowhere Man named Jeremy Hillary Boob, Ph.D., a chick flying around the sky with diamonds while another leaves home, and more! The Beatles know how to tell a story.

Also known as POTR for short. A week ago we played Dylan’s boy. Today we feature Willie’s boy, and he’s no slouch either. Get yourself ready for some great country rock to cap off our programming.

People refer to Marvin Gaye’s story as “tragic.” But the “tragic” part was only part of Marvin Gaye’s legacy. His influence on the development of the Motown sound earned him the title ‘The Prince of Motown.’ He left behind a musical legacy of great soul and R & B songs which should not be overshadowed by the tragic nature of his death.

Emmylou Harris’ career began back in 1969 and she is still on the move. During that time she has won 14 Grammy Awards, the Polar Music Prize (and many other awards too numerous to mention here), been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Harris is rightfully credited with making country more accessible to a wider audience, and today we put her In the Spotlight.

When I was young and dumb, I just assumed that these guys came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. In fact, what we have are four guys from Berkeley who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. They also just happened to make some of the greatest rock n’ roll on the planet. I was still in my twenties and I recall the horror I felt thinking “who the hell would want to kill John Lennon?” Today, we celebrate the music John Lennon left us as the heart and soul of The Beatles, as a solo artist, and with the various iterations of The Plastic Ono Band.
