Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a full day Tuesday Bluesday this week because our Album of The Week is blues too! Does it get any better than that?

There’s nothing like Chicago and the blues, that’s for sure. I made several trips out to the Windy City during a previous lifetime and made sure to frequent the blues clubs every time. Today you’ll hear Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Slim, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson and more!

This one is already crying out for update and extension. We’ll get there, but we kick off this playlist with nearly three hours of blues.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Greatest Hits by Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac

This is the second airing of our AOW, and it’s a great one. As I’ve said before, greatest hits collections do not often appear on our list (there are always exceptions), but his one belongs here. Not many people realize that Peter Green is a founding member of Fleetwood Mac, and that the Mac started out as a British blues-rock band.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

I remember my first trip to the House of Blues in New Orleans years ago and the painting of Taj Mahal on the box office wall. I’ve been hooked ever since. Taj Mahal, also known as Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Jr., is a blues musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo, guitar, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. He often gives a little world music flavor to the blues. You’ll love him if you haven’t heard him before.

We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Etta James’ career began the year I was born, in 1954. Right up through 2012, her big, earthy voice has interpreted many genres, including R & B/soul, the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll. She gained fame with several hits, including Tell Mama, At Last, and I’d Rather Go Blind. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999). Shall I say it yet again? It is a great day to tune us in. Good Morning, Folks! We’re back to Moan-Day all over again with a great line-up, including a couple of spotlight features, one brand new!

It’s no secret that The Fab Four were big time Fats Domino fans, and so are we! Today he’s In the Spotlight.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Fats Domino

Was the man from New Orleans the first to play rock n’ roll? I think that could be the case. This guy was making sounds nobody else was making back in the day. He was certainly a bona fide pioneer of the craft, of that there is no doubt. His first single, The Fat Man, is credited as the first rock n’ roll record and the first to sell more than a million copies. Between 1955 and 1960, Fats Domino had eleven Top 10 U.S. hits on the Billboard charts. He sold more than 65 million records during his groundbreaking career.

3:30 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Moody Blues NEW!

We have a couple of live performances of these guys, but we thought it was an appropriate time to put a spotlight feature together in light of Graeme Edge’s passing on November 12. He was their drummer and the last original band member. We bring you the best of the Moodies today.

At Midweek, It’s Dan Fogelberg In the Spotlight, An Afternoon Trifecta-Fest, and The Beatles This Evening, Wednesday, November 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again at midweek. It’s Truck Day at the old slave shack, but I certainly have you covered musically in my absence. The Music Mermaid will see that everything is carried out to the letter.

The Beatles touched down in the U.S. on February 7, 1964, my tenth birthday. It changed everything.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

This guy’s name doesn’t always roll off people’s tongue, but it should. Fogelberg was a singer, songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist who, for me, provided an oasis in the dry desert of the eighties music scene (absolutely not my favorite generation of music), along with a few others, most notably Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. People can debate an artist’s “best” album all day and night because that decision is subjective and personal. For me Souvenirs was not only his best album, but one of the best albums ever put on vinyl.

This is the other half of our House Band duo, and over the next few days we’ll be playing their stuff in chronological order.

Come on, people. Join your friends. Wednesday always seems to be fairly active early in the morning: Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Russian Federation, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and the UK are on so far. These people know good music when they hear it.

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Although many have not heard of Tracy Nelson, she’s been around for quite some time. Since her career started, she has recorded more than 20 albums. Her first album, Deep Are The Roots, was an acoustic blues album recorded in Chicago and released in 1965. While in Chicago she met and learned from many blues icons, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Otis Spann. She also fronted a band called Mother Earth which shared the Fillmore concert stage with The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Her signature song, Down So Low, was written and recorded by Nelson around the Mother Earth time, but has also been covered by Linda Ronstadt, Maria Mudaur, Ellen McIlwaine, and Etta James. Tune this woman in.

It’s an all-girl Tuesday Bluesday as we bring you a live bootleg performance of Janis with The Kozmic Blues Band live from The Netherlands. I was multi-tasking as I wrote today’s blog entry and I came across this article about Janis Joplin. I found it quite perceptive and thought I’d share it with you.

Well, gang, what can I say? We’re free. Totally. No hidden shit. Nothing that we sneak in. We don’t ask for a “subscription” or a credit card to listen. Good Morning, Musicologists! We run the gamut today, showing our musical versatility here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. While we are definitely not all things to all people, we try to be all things for those we serve.

We kick off our day with Stephen Stills and Manassas

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Stephen Stills & Manassas Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, March 23, 1972

Manassas is one of those bands many people have “fuzzy” memories of. They know they were out there, but are not quite sure what they were all about. As with all things Stills (a noted control freak), the band was formed mostly as a vehicle for his music (and it is great music, in truth). The members were Stills, Chris Hillman (formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers), Al Perkins, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, Dallas Taylor, Paul Harris and Joe Layla. The players were invited to jam with Stills, they recorded an album and hit the road. They would break up, and reform with a different cast to record again, and then were done. But they made some great stuff along the way, like other supergroups.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to Dusty Springfield’s fine effort today. But stick around, people. When you roll out of bed tomorrow morning, the first day of daylight savings, there’s going to be another great selection. I promise.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

The Big O is back today for your listening pleasure. It’s hard to believe that this guy hasn’t been around forever. His music feels like he should have been, but fate had other ideas. We keep Otis Redding alive here in The Mermaid Lounge. He’s a favorite.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, May 26, 1977 NEW!

We are back this week with a new live recording of The Dead in concert after a brief visit to replay land. This time around, they’re live at the Baltimore Civic Center. Enjoy.
