We’re Exiting the Work Week in Style With an Impressive Lineup at Red Rocks, Stevie Wonder’s Final Stand, and The Final Volume of The Heartbreakers at The Fillmore ’97, on Friday, February 3, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We’ve got Stevie Wonder’s final turn as this week’s singer-songwriter sandwiched between two great live performances to close out the work week. Read on!

I must say I had the pleasure of seeing this tour at what was then called The Tweeter Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, back in 1999. I even bought myself a tee that I wore so much that I wore it out. This was an amazing performance by an incredibly gifted group of musicians that I will never forget. We bring it to you today for your listening pleasure!

3:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Stevie Wonder FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Stevie Wonder as this week’s featured singer-songwriter, so get on it while you can. The man had his first No. 1 hit at the age of thirteen, after signing his first contract with Tamla at the age of eleven. Tomorrow, we’ll be selecting a brand new artist, but today we’ve got “Little” Stevie Wonder.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, Volume Three, 1997

We close out the programming today with the final volume of The Heartbreakers’s unprecedented 20-show residency at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Many in attendance purchased tickets for multiple nights and were treated to a different show each time as the band scrapped their canned show and took their lead from audience suggestions. This is one event I wish I had the opportunity to see, but the release by curated by the Petty family and his bandmates is pretty incredible.

I don’t know what’s going on with the weather where you are, but here in Boston we’ve got high winds with wind chill factors down to -36 degrees forecasted for today through tomorrow. If I didn’t have to go out to work, I’d be here in The Mermaid Lounge listening to all this great music. And hey, we’re not just broadcasting when we have programming. She is best known for her song Sunny Came Home, which won Grammys for both Song and Record of the Year in 1998. She has been composing, singing, recording and performing live for decades and is rightfully our new featured singer-songwriter.

This one has been on my ‘to do’ list for a while and I’ve finally brought it to fruition here. Carly Simon began singing with her sister, Lucy, back in 1963 and strung together a bunch of great hits during the seventies like Anticipation, That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be, and You’re So Vain. While Mick Jagger appears on You’re So Vain and everyone assumed it was about him, Carly Simon actually revealed that it was about Warren Beatty.

We’re just getting warmed up for the weekend here in The Mermaid Lounge, so do give us a shot. We’re totally free 24/7 and we do not run commercial advertising. I have long been a fan of Leon Russell. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I also remember the first time I heard Carney and thinking that this would be the album where others would recognize just how great he truly was. Carney is Russell’s third studio album, released in 1972. It gave him his first hit single in Tight Rope (backed by Masquerade). The album is a split between straightforward roots rock and a bit of psychedelia. The music critics hate that shit, but his fans didn’t. That’s what mattered. The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

Water is absolutely essential to the perpetuation of life on the planet, and it is a popular subject in the music world, as you will see. It’s Sunday morning here in The Mermaid Lounge and I’m off to a bit of a later start than usual, but that’s because we’re keeping it simple today. Somehow, it’s only fitting that Rumors is our Album of The Week this week as we bid farewell to the late, great Christine McVie. We here in the Lounge believe the best stuff on this one was hers.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Rumors by Fleetwood Mac NEW!

Sometimes things just fall into place. When I add to my album list, I sometimes add ten or twenty to the list at time so I don’t have to think about it every week. That’s what happened with Rumors. I had no idea I’d be paying respects to the late, great Christine McVie this week. It’s only fitting that this great album fell into place here. One of my favorite albums of all time for sure from a band I sometimes have a love-hate relationship with. But that’s me. Big Mac is one of those bands I liked better as a blues band. I certainly don’t like everything they did as a pop-rock band, but I like enough of it. This was their eleventh studio album and it was released during a time of heavy drug use and personal relationship management problems, hence the title. I only ever saw them once live in my lifetime and that was enough. It was just that Stevie Nicks spent too much time changing outfits for me.

One of the best times in music was undoubtedly the sixties and seventies, when cross-pollination was king. It was during this time that country-rock was born. She has since become one of the most respected music artists and songwriters in the business. You can read about her here, and you can hear her for yourselves tonight at ten.

We’re off to an early start today, so I can’t spend a lot of time writing here. Suffice it to say that you can look at the blog post from yesterday and read the final paragraph.
