Brian Wilson is considered a genius in songwriting circles for many reasons, one of which is his novel approaches to pop music composition. There is absolutely no doubt that he is one of the most innovative and influential songwriters of his generation. He also happens to be the co-founder of The Beach Boys, and that is certainly what he is best known for. Today we pay him respects as both because you wouldn’t have one without the other.

You all know by now that one of my biggest musical regrets is not seeing Mudcrutch at The House of Blues here in Boston. This playlist seals it for me: I was dumb as a bucket of rocks to miss this concert.

We’ve got a lot of wide Open Stream today, and that’s always a good thing because you never know what The Music Mermaid is going to pull out of her top hat. As you well know, she has exceptional taste in music.

Gregg Allman became the heart and soul of the band after his brother died, and he did himself and Duane proud.

Here’s a guy who doesn’t get the attention he should. Most people know him as the leader of Electric Light Orchestra, but Jeff Lynne is more than that. He’s one of the most prolific singer-songwriters on the planet. Before ELO, there was a sixties band called The Move, which recorded and released the original version of Do Ya. He was a founding member of The Traveling Wilburys. And finally, he’s a record producer who worked with both George Harrison and Tom Petty over his long career. Tonight we introduce him as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

For most people it’s a long weekend where we’ll celebrate our alleged freedom (although all I see from the GOP are rights being rolled back). All that propaganda aside, it’s absolutely not propaganda that we play the best music on the planet totally free with no commercial interruption on a 24/7 schedule. Give us a shot.

He was a prolific songwriter whose compositions are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, such as Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You. His songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Emmylou Harris (the absolute best version of Pancho & Lefty ever, IMO), Norah Jones, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan himself.
