We Intro The Liverbirds, Then It’s ‘Ladies Day Out’ and a Judy Collins ‘Spotlight’ on Sunday, December 29, 2024

Good morning, music historians. We’re sure you’ve never heard about The Liverbirds, a band referred to as ‘the all-girl Beatles’ who came from Liverpool and graced the music scene from 1963 to 1968. We’ve got them today, as well as all-girl programming!

Here’s your all-girl lineup:

Was there an all-girl band before the Liverbirds from, where else, Liverpool, England? We’re not sure. They were on the music scene from 1963 through 1968 and are referred to as ‘the all-girl Beatles’. We have a link from Wikipedia in the opening paragraph of this blog entry, but here’s some additional information on this band.

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Nobody plays female artists like we do, and this is a great playlist including Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Susan Tedeschi, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Ann Peebles and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Judy Collins

We close out the programming with a woman whose career has spanned seven decades, releasing 36 albums and six live albums.

We love days when all of the programming centers around women. We play more women in a week than most stations play in a month. We’re on 24/7 with no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music. The button is below.

Today It’s Our ‘Ode to Morning’ EP, New Heartbreakers Music, and Amy Winehouse on Thursday, December 26, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and we’re over the hump and headed for the weekend. We start out with songs about morning, then it’s the new-ish deluxe edition of Long After Dark and some live Amy Winehouse.

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We start out the day with songs about morning, my favorite time of day, with Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

This is a new release of one of The Heartbreakers’ sleeper albums. I say that because it was probably one of their least appreciated offerings, yet there are plenty of great songs on here beyond You Got Lucky, one of their signature hits. This release offers four never-before-heard songs, so that’s like brand new Heartbreaker music. It also contains an expanded version of one of the band’s most fun songs and a cult favorite, Heartbreakers Beach Party. A few songs appear twice because they were recorded for videos which appeared on French TV. As such, they are slightly different from each other. Enjoy. I did.

8:00 p.m. Amy Winehouse Live at Porchester Hall, London, UK, March 8, 2007

We don’t play much music from this time, but Amy Winehouse is an exception because she was a true R & B artist and we can appreciate that. Unfortunately, her demons got the best of her before she realized her true potential.

We embark on another day. Some of you will be back at work after Christmas and some will be on vacation. Either way, we remain on the air 24/7, totally free and with no commercial advertising. The button is below.

Sunday Brings The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Who ‘In the Spotlight’ and Music From Laurel Canyon, December 22, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! It’s a balmy 8 degrees here in the Boston area, where we seem to have wildly fluctuating temperatures. But it’s cozy here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

A new live performance by The Flying Burrito Brothers starts us off today. Although best known for their connection to their legendary founder, Gram Parsons, and Chris Hillman formerly of The Byrds, the lineup underwent a never-ending cycle of changes. The Burritos’ lineup for this show was Skip Battin and Gene Parsons alongside Gib Guilbeau, Joel Scott Hill, and pedal steel legend “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow. Ever changing but always great.

1:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Who

Monday Brings the ‘Rolling Thunder Revue’, a Yusuf/Cat Stevens ‘Spotlight’ and a Byrds Reunion on December 2, 2024

Back to the work week as Christmas season in retail is in full swing. It’s never pretty. But we have got some great Monday music on tap to help get you through.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bob Dylan: Selections From the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue

We start out with selections from Dylan’s 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour recorded in a variety of venues in the U.S. and Canada. Some of the folks accompanying Dylan on the tour are Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, T-Bone Burnett, Scarlet Rivera, Ronee Blakeley and others.

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Yusuf/Cat Stevens

I remember when Tea for The Tillerman came out. I practically wore out the grooves. The Cat, as we used to call him when we were young, had delivered some of the best music on the planet. I also remember how badly he was treated here in the U.S. after 9-11 simply because he had converted to Islam. One of the darkest times in history. We’ve got another coming up soon.

8:00 p.m. The Byrds Live at The Boarding House, San Francisco, CA, February 9, 1978

A reunion of one of the most consequential bands in music history broadcast live on KSAN 95 FM, San Francisco.

Another work week rolls around, but we’re at work delivering the best music on the planet 24/7, 365 days a year, at no charge and with absolutely no commercial interruption. We’re the anti-capitalist station. The button is below. Listening is believing.

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We’re starting the day off with a music genre that pretty much birthed the protest music movement with John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Odetta, Peter, Paul & Mary, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter family and more.

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Tom Waits

Not always, but sometimes, folk is Tom Waits. He writes about the underbelly of humanity and delivers his stories in his signature gravelly voice. Today he’s ‘In the Spotlight.’

8:00 p.m. Tim Hardin Live at Woodstock, Max Yasgur’s Farm, Bethel, NY, August 15, 1969

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

4:00 p.m. Electric Light Orchestra Live at The Paris Theatre, London, UK, April 19, 1973

Today they’re called Jeff Lynne’s ELO and rightly so. They just went on their farewell tour. If I were still attending big venue events, I’d have seen them in Boston. I’m not. But I’ve seen them twice before and they never disappoint. Today we have them live from the Paris Theatre in London.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bob Dylan

Singer, songwriter, poet, Nobel Prize Winner and veteran of 60 years in the music business, we put Bob Dylan ‘In the Spotlight’ tonight to close out our programming.

Midweek Brings Our Big Folk Music EP, a John Prine ‘Spotlight’ and Live Joni Mitchell on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

Good morning and welcome to midweek with our big folk music EP, and some of the best folk artists in the genre that started the protest music movement and raised everyone’s social consciousness.

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

You’ll hear from John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, The Kingston Trio, The Carter Family, Nanci Griffith, Richie Havens, Neil Young and more!

We close with the great Joni Mitchell’s 1972 live performance from the iconic Carnegie Hall.

I apologize for the starkness of the blog. We are having technical difficulties an it will not allow photos today for some odd and annoying reason. But we’re here. Rest assured. The music will go on. Annoyingly, there is no button below, but there is a link.

Saturday Brings Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, The Pre-Disco Bee Gees, and The Allman Brothers Band, October 26, 2024

Welcome Weekenders! Today we open with our ‘Ode to Morning’ multi-artist EP, followed by the Bee Gees In The Spotlight and The Allman Brothers Band in concert later.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We start the day with the sun coming up and songs about the morning from Hoyt Axton, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Graham Parson, Taj Mahal, Simon & Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Jonathan Edwards, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

There are a lot of before-and-after bands, like The Doobies before Michael McDonald (the old Doobies were better). Before the Bee Gees somehow managed to immerse themselves in disco, there was a really great and innovative rock band in there. That is the band we celebrate with this playlist. You won’t hear Stayin’ Alive here or any other Bee Gees music from that phase. That’s a promise.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, Middle Georgia Raceway, Byron, GA, July 3-5, 1970

The Brothers bring it to the Atlanta International Pop Festival to close out Saturday’s musical festivities. But the music continues 24/7.

We’ve made it to the weekend, my friends, and that is always a good thing. After today, I get two days off so that I can start lining up next week’s music. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. The button is below.
