This is the infamously great concert with Valerie Carter as the opener and on stage with Linda backing her up during the main event. The good music fairy was shining down that day. It’s not often you get to see two great singers together on the same stage, but I was fortunate on this particular night.

John Prine was a genuine original, a country-folk singer-songwriter who often used his great wit and introspection to write (sometimes) humorous songs containing elements of protest and social commentary. I was fortunate to see him once during my lifetime (and his), but wish it had been more. We own all of his material here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ll play it for you later today.

This was the first time Dusty Springfield brought her unique R & B style together with the Memphis sound. It sold poorly when it was released in 1969, but as Springfield’s music became known and her legend grew, things changed. Later, it would be acclaimed by critics as one of the most important popular music albums ever made. It also spawned Son of A Preacher Man, Springfield’s “signature” song and her great version of Windmills Of Your Mind.

There are many reasons to tune us in, people. Must I keep listing them? I mean, I will if I have to. We’re totally free and we don’t ask for a credit card or personal information. Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate road jam band. This one’s from the Cape Cod Coliseum, a venue which many claims feels like it’s “in the middle of nowhere.” Funny, I don’t remember that. Then again, I don’t remember a lot about my trips to the Cape Cod Coliseum, to be honest.

Great day to tune us in, as always. I know I say that every day, but I also mean it every day. Hey, look, where else do you get to try something out for free. In my experience, new “experiences” always seem to require a credit card with the caveat that you can cancel at any time. Well, that’s not the way we do business around here. You’ll remember our Music Festival Wednesday this week we talked about Summer Jam in 1973 at Watkins Glen. The bands were The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead. We’re still searching for a decent recording of the entire event, but we’ve got the next best thing. This is the most-attended music event in known history, and you got all three bands for a mere $10. Are you kidding me?

This recording of The Grateful Dead (soundboard, so decent quality) is the closest we come since both The Allman Brothers Band and The Band join them on stage toward the end of their set. We hope you enjoy, and we will continue our search.

From Bob Dylan’s back-up band to one of the most important and influential acts in popular music.

It didn’t take long for The Band to become one of my favorites, and they have remained in my top three bands of all time today. They started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band but became one of the most important and influential bands in popular music history. This is also a tip of the hat to the nationally-syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour which brought some of the best bands in history into our living rooms.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

This is our second-to-last airing of one of the pivotal albums in popular music, which turned fifty in June of this year. The final airing will be on Saturday. On Sunday when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you, so get Blue in while you can!

One of the most fun sets we’ve put together. Songs with food and drink used in the title or lyrics…some of the songs are not even about either of those things, but it matters not.
