It was one of those nights where I hadn’t yet decided on the second act for today. Then I saw Linda Ronstadt’s name trending on Twitter. Like many of her fans, I went into a panic. I was happy to find out that it was just an old interview where she skewered Rupert Murdoch…at a time where most of us hadn’t yet been exposed to what he was really about. She, however, was dating Jerry Brown at the time and was very much in tune. Needless to say, I was relieved. Therefore, you all have this great concert to go to tonight!

Life is full of risks. This is not one of them. This is a no-brainer. We play music all day and night, non-stop, completely free to the public. No. You cannot created “custom” playlists here. This was the debut album by Roberta Flack, released on June 20, 1969, and is considered by many to be one of the top soul and R & B albums of all time. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked the album at no. 451 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. We tend to agree here in The Mermaid Lounge. The album includes First Time Ever I Saw Your Face which was propelled to number one in the U.S. (on the Billboard album chart and the Billboard R & B album chart) with its inclusion in the great Clint Eastwood film, Play Misty For Me. It is our Album of The Week.

We bid farewell to a great album today, the only album credited to Paul & Linda McCartney. It was released during a time of great public feuding between McCartney and his former bandmates and was subject to some criticism. At the end of the day when we all got over the break-up of the greatest band on the planet, Ram became one of Paul McCartney’s most critically acclaimed albums and remains so today.

Wendy Waldman’s career has been as diverse as her capabilities. She’s a singer, songwriter and record producer who started out in a band called Bryndle. Singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff was another member of Bryndle (and we will be featuring her soon, BTW) along with Andrew Gold and Kenny Edwards who would later become members of Linda Ronstadt’s band. But I digress. After Bryndle, Waldman embarked on a successful solo career releasing several great albums, including The Main Refrain, a brilliant effort. Later, she moved to Nashville to focus on songwriting. Today we put Wendy Waldman In The Spotlight.

Known as ‘The Legend’ among Reggae fans, Bob Marley is perhaps the most visual and storied ambassador of Reggae, Ska, Rocksteady. In 1963, he formed The Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. By late 1963, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith had joined the group. The rest, as they say, is history as they became the most influential band in Reggae music.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! I’m excited as hell about our Album of The Week. It’s an unusual find, but I cannot wait. We also have a lot of that Laurel Canyon country-rock mixed in with our great traditional country EP today.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Songs for Judy by Neil Young NEW!

This is not your typical album, and it’s an exciting choice for our Album of The Week. If you don’t know about the album, you may be assuming it’s a bunch of “period” type songs from Judy Garland as sung by Neil Young. But you’d be wrong. It’s actually a compilation of live acoustic set songs by Neil Young while on his 1976 tour with Crazy Horse. This album comprises all 22 songs that he sung on that tour as part of an opening live acoustic set. Where does Judy Garland come in to all of this? The album title comes from Young’s own story about hallucinating one night and seeing Judy Garland sitting in the orchestra pit. This album is Volume 7 in the Performance Series of The Neil Young Archives.

3:00 p.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

You’ll be hearing more Neil Young here because this EP is literally named after one of his songs!
