Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another one of those crazy music Saturdays here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got some great stuff for you today. Read on for details!

Our jumping off programming point today is an expanded ‘Sounds of the Supergroups’

Here’s your Saturday programming:

11:00 a.m. The Sounds of The Supergroups: Various Artists EXPANDED & UPDATED!

We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

You will hear Cream, Derek & The Dominos, CSNY, The Traveling Wilburys (the world’s all-in number one supergroup of all time as continually voted by the public), The Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson), Blind Faith, Supertramp, The Plastic Ono Band, Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris), andThe Super Super Blues Band (Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley).

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul FINAL AIRING!

It’s sayonara after today’s airing, so get on it. Tomorrow we’ll introduce a brand new choice to you as our Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Saturday is here. The weekend is upon (some of) us. Some of us have one more stint left, and that would be me. But you can be here with us in The Mermaid Lounge enjoying life free of charge.

It’s Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge and We’re Pretty Busy With Our ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP, a Bonnie Raitt Birthday Tribute, the Final Airing of the AOW, and LIVE DEAD Later, November 13, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’re pretty busy here today. We’ll keep you happy with some great music and programming features as you begin your weekend. I’ve had some email requests from some of our far flung friends to start our EP’s a bit earlier every once in a while, so here we go!

We’re kicking off the EP train a bit earlier today for some of our more far-flung friends!

Yes, it’s that time again where we focus on some real country (not bad pop bands with fiddles, as Tom Petty describes them), and the legends of country-rock. You’ll hear Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Guy Clark, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Trio (Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris), Bob Dylan, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, and more! This is just about five hours of uninterrupted bliss.

3:30 p.m. Album of The Week: The Gilded Palace of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to one of the most important albums in the evolution of country rock, the first from The Flying Burrito Brothers. Tomorrow when you wake up, there will be a brand new selection.

7:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt & Friends Live at Ultrasonic Studios, New York, October 17, 1972

Our birthday girl tribute to Bonnie Raitt is a great “live” studio event from 1972 held at Ultrasonic Studios in New York and broadcast on WLIR-FM with Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George (Little Feat), John Hammond, and Freebo (also known as Daniel Friedberg), who is mostly known for his work with Bonnie Raitt. 10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at the CU Events Center, University of Colorado, Boulder, December 9, 1981 NEW!

We close out our Saturday night programming with another new live performance from the world’s ultimate jam band. This one comes live from the University of Colorado.

It’s Our Usual Busy Saturday with Stephen Stills & Manassas, Dusty Springfield, Otis Redding, and LIVE DEAD Later, November 6, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We run the gamut today, showing our musical versatility here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. While we are definitely not all things to all people, we try to be all things for those we serve.

We kick off our day with Stephen Stills and Manassas

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Stephen Stills & Manassas Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, March 23, 1972

Manassas is one of those bands many people have “fuzzy” memories of. They know they were out there, but are not quite sure what they were all about. As with all things Stills (a noted control freak), the band was formed mostly as a vehicle for his music (and it is great music, in truth). The members were Stills, Chris Hillman (formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers), Al Perkins, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, Dallas Taylor, Paul Harris and Joe Layla. The players were invited to jam with Stills, they recorded an album and hit the road. They would break up, and reform with a different cast to record again, and then were done. But they made some great stuff along the way, like other supergroups.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to Dusty Springfield’s fine effort today. But stick around, people. When you roll out of bed tomorrow morning, the first day of daylight savings, there’s going to be another great selection. I promise.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

The Big O is back today for your listening pleasure. It’s hard to believe that this guy hasn’t been around forever. His music feels like he should have been, but fate had other ideas. We keep Otis Redding alive here in The Mermaid Lounge. He’s a favorite.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, May 26, 1977 NEW!

We are back this week with a new live recording of The Dead in concert after a brief visit to replay land. This time around, they’re live at the Baltimore Civic Center. Enjoy.

Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate road jam band. This one’s from the Cape Cod Coliseum, a venue which many claims feels like it’s “in the middle of nowhere.” Funny, I don’t remember that. Then again, I don’t remember a lot about my trips to the Cape Cod Coliseum, to be honest.

Great day to tune us in, as always. I know I say that every day, but I also mean it every day. Hey, look, where else do you get to try something out for free. In my experience, new “experiences” always seem to require a credit card with the caveat that you can cancel at any time. Well, that’s not the way we do business around here. In fact, we’re not “doing business” around here. We’re playing music. Period. End of story.

This was undoubtedly one of the most amazing performances I have ever witnessed. It was billed as The Two of Us, but it was really in support of their great duet album, Western Wall, The Tucson Sessions recorded at the Arizona Inn.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to this week’s AOW, Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection. (I repeat this shit every week, don’t I?)

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This one’s not our Album of The Week this week because it has already been our AOW once. But in the midst of Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge, we believe this album begs replaying. According to producer Ryan Ulyate, this was one of those albums where Petty kept coming in with great songs…to the point where fifteen were included here. Released on June 15, 2010, it was Petty’s first new album with the band in eight years and the consensus everywhere was that it was well worth the wait.

Good Morning, Musicologists! Tom Petty Month gets underway in a serious manner today with music from their legendary residency at the Fillmore West in 1997.

This is just over three hours of music recorded during The Heartbreakers’ legendary residency at The Fillmore West back in 1997. It is testament to the fact that this band is undoubtedly one of the greatest bands ever to step onto a stage and engage with an audience. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen better, and I’ve seen a hell of a lot of live performances in my lifetime.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One FINAL AIRING

We bid a fond farewell to Volume One of the Traveling Wilburys two great albums. We’ll have the other sometime during Tom Petty Month for sure.

You’ll remember our Music Festival Wednesday this week we talked about Summer Jam in 1973 at Watkins Glen. The bands were The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead. We’re still searching for a decent recording of the entire event, but we’ve got the next best thing. This is the most-attended music event in known history, and you got all three bands for a mere $10. Are you kidding me?

This recording of The Grateful Dead (soundboard, so decent quality) is the closest we come since both The Allman Brothers Band and The Band join them on stage toward the end of their set. We hope you enjoy, and we will continue our search.
