This is The Beach Boys eleventh studio release, although it was pretty much a Brian Wilson tour-de-force solo project of major proportions. He composed the majority of this by himself, spurred on by a mystical revelation (there was a lot of that going around those days) and by the work of The Beatles. It is certainly considered one of the greatest and most influential albums in popular music history.

When Linda Ronstadt first left Tucson for LA to make music, she met Bobby Kimmel who proposed they start a band. Then came Kenny Edwards (who would become an integral part of her solo career band). Thus, The Stone Poneys were born. The rest, as they say, is musical history as Linda Ronstadt forged an amazing career that earned her the title ‘The Queen of Rock’ in a male-dominated world. These early days are often forgotten, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge as we give you a brand new Spotlight featuring her days as a Stone Poney.

This is the band’s third studio album (and fourth overall), released in 1966 by Kama Sutra Records, and peaking at #14 on the charts. The album fulfilled the band’s desire to record in a variety of musical genres, including pop, country, jug-band, blues and folk. It was also the last full project by the original lineup. The album spawned four single releases, including the number one hit Summer In The City. Rain On The Roof, Nashvile Cats and Full Measure would also make the charts.

This particular playlist is about to undergo an upgrade, but for now, the original is still pretty great. This great mostly bluegrass band dominated in the early 2000’s behind the amazing voice of Alison Krauss. This was their twelfth album release (November 23, 2004) and won the band three Grammys in 2006. The song A Living Prayer was also honored with the award for Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year from the Gospel Music Association. Krauss has established herself as one of the most influential artists in bluegrass music and is also one hell of a fiddler.

This is the newest EP and it’s all about friends, good and bad. We’ve all had experience there, right? 7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Groovin’ by The Young Rascals NEW!

No doubt, The Rascals are one of our favorite bands; a great rock band that could really make real R&B music. They just kept churning out the hits between 1964 and 1969. You couldn’t keep them off the charts, and they fully deserved to be there. Groovin’ was their third studio album, released on July 31, 1967. It went to #5 on the Billboard Top LP chart, #7 on the R&B chart, and #2 in Canada. Eight of the songs were released as singles, with the title track reaching #1 in the U.S. This would be the final album where they would use the ‘Young’ moniker. Moving on, they would explore psychedelia as did so many bands of this generation. They will be back here again with another AOW.
