Sunday Brings The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Who ‘In the Spotlight’ and Music From Laurel Canyon, December 22, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! It’s a balmy 8 degrees here in the Boston area, where we seem to have wildly fluctuating temperatures. But it’s cozy here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

A new live performance by The Flying Burrito Brothers starts us off today. Although best known for their connection to their legendary founder, Gram Parsons, and Chris Hillman formerly of The Byrds, the lineup underwent a never-ending cycle of changes. The Burritos’ lineup for this show was Skip Battin and Gene Parsons alongside Gib Guilbeau, Joel Scott Hill, and pedal steel legend “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow. Ever changing but always great.

1:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Who

Formed in London in 1964, The Who became one of the most influential bands of the 20th Century, making many contributions to rock music and pioneering the rock opera with Tommy.

4:00 p.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

We move into the evening hours with one of our most popular EPs featuring the artists that helped to launch the country-rock genre, including The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and more!

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

The Doors were born in L.A. in 1965 and helped to pioneer the psychedelic and acid rock sound of the sixties.

1:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Of course, there were many artists who helped to bring the genre to the mainstream, none the least of which was The Beatles, who embraced it wholeheartedly. In additon to them, you’ll also hear Vanilla Fudge, the Chambers Brothers, the Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Blues Image, The Doors, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakersc, Donovan, The Byrds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Velvet Underground and more!

Monday Brings Our ‘Out In The Cold’ Playlist, Then the Gregg Allman Band and The Grateful Dead, October 28, 2024

Good morning, musicologists. Today we’re ‘Out In the Cold’ then it’s live Gregg Allman Band and a Grateful Dead ‘Spotlight’ feature.

Here’s your musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Out In The Cold: Various Artists

Not an EP, but good enough to start the day! Songs about the weather with Albert King, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bob Dylan, Johnny Rivers, Bill Withers, The Association, Neil Young, Martha & The Vandellas, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Electric Light Orchestra and more!

4:00 p.m. The Gregg Allman Band Live at Wolfgang’s, San Francisco, CA, May 14, 1987

Afternoon brings a live performance from Gregg Allman’s ‘other’ band at Wolfgang’s. Back in the day, Wolfgang’s was the place, a small 600-seat venue which is now defunct. Still, it’s easier to remember who did not play the venue than those who did. It was that popular.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Grateful Dead

I’m one of those people who likes the Dead’s studio music better than their live performances. Founding member and bass player Phil Lesh passed away this past week, and we air this in honor of him today.

Yes, it’s a return to the work day today. Mondays are always rough, but we can get you through! We’re on 24/7 with no commercial interruption playing the best music on the planet. And we’re free. Just close your door and pull up a tab. The button is below.

On Thursday It’s ‘Here Comes The Night,’ Dan Fogelberg, and Joni Mitchell & James Taylor Live in London, October 24, 2024

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to The Mermaid Lounge! Today we start out the day with songs about the night. Then it’s a Dan Fogelberg Spotlight, and Joni Mitchell & James Taylor live at the Paris Theater.

Here’s Thursday’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We start the morning with songs about the night from Warren Zevon, The J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Doors, John Cougar Mellencamp, Poco, Emmylou Harris, The Animals, Neil Diamond, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

Dan Fogelberg was one of those guys who kind of fell through the cracks, and I have absolutely no idea why. A great singer and songwriter who can boast one of the absolute best albums ever made at any time with Souvenirs.

8:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell & James Taylor Live at The Paris Club, London, UK, October 29, 1970

Yes, of course they were ‘a thing’ at the time, but it’s a great concert nevertheless.

One more early morning shift and I’m a closer for a couple of days. But don’t you worry. The Music Mermaid shifts into control to make sure we get this done. The button is below.

Monday We’ve Got a Couple of Live Performances From Van Morrison and The Doors Sandwiched Around a Townes Van Zandt Spotlight, October 14, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome back to the work week. We’ve got some great music on tap for today mixed in with the great big wide Open Stream! And by the way, Happy Indigenous People’s Day because Christopher Columbus was a real piece of shit.

Here’s your Monday musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Van Morrison Live at The Masonic Auditorium, San Francisco, CA, December 18, 1993

I will admit that I find Van Morrison a bit caustic as a human being, but the man is a legend and his shows are a virtual spiritual experience.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Townes Van Zandt

Townes Van Zandt is the only songwriter that I’ve ever heard anyone come close to putting on a pedastal next to Bob Dylan. Some of the songs he has written, such as Pancho & Lefty, are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, and with good reason.

8:00 p.m. The Doors Live at The Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, June 6, 1970

We close out the programming with the Lizard King and his band.

Don’t know what it’s like there, but it’s pretty rainy and gloomy here in the Boston area today. Good day to hunker down with some good music as my vacation comes to a close and I return to hardware hell tomorrow. By the way, the button is below.

We Start With The Traveling Wilburys, Then It’s Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Wide Open Stream Tonight, Sunday, October 6, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. It’s Sunday Funday in The Mermaid Lounge and we continue on with our Tom Petty celebration with a great Traveling Wilburys entry.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. The Traveling Wilburys: The Bootleg Collection

Always a favorite, both the supergroup (and this is a true supergroup) and this playlist of outtakes, alternate takes and extended sessions. What we essentially have here is five friends who harnessed that friendship to create some of the most amazing music on the planet. Roy was the first to go. Then George. Then Tom. But their music rocks on.

2:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Life on the road is a popular topic in popular music. Just ask Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Rush, Buffalo Springfield, The Guess Who and more!

We then return to our big, wide Open Stream to take us through to morning. We’ll be back to close out our Tom Petty celebration with a Fillmore trifecta tomorrow! The button is below.

Spend Your Day With a Carly Simon Spotlight, The Trio Sessions, and The Doors Live on Friday, September 27, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We are one day from the official weekend and we’ve got a Carly Simon Spotlight feature and live Doors wrapped around Ronstadt-Parton-Harris’s Trio Sessions.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

9:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Carly Simon

This incredible singer-songwriter rose to fame during the seventies with her string of 13 Top 40 hits, including You’re So Vain (which is not about Jagger, but about Warren Beatty, apparently), Anticipation, The Right Thing To Do, and Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. Today we put her In The Spotlight to start things off.

12:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris: The Trio Sessions

Nobody calls this alignment a “supergroup” for some reason, but it surely is and we always do. All three of these brilliant women had already embarked on incredibly successful solo careers before they got together for two of the best albums ever made. Today, we have the Trio Sessions that includes outtakes and alternative versions, among other things. Enjoy.

6:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation: Volume Two

We take you through the evening with volume two of our Sixties Rotation, focusing on the mid-to-late part of the decade with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Joni Mitchell, The Yardbirds, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison, B. B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, The Doors, The Box Tops, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival and more!

We’re here 24/7 with absolutely no commercial interruption. We’re also totally free with no hidden charges, no passwords, no credit cards required. The button is below. See for yourself. Go ahead. You know you want to.
