This alliance brought the first bona fide country music supergroup (but not the last; we have them next week). Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash were pioneers of the outlaw country music genre, and today we have them live at the Nassau Coliseum.

8:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers Live at The Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Nashville, TN, September 28, 1990

This one is known as The Lost Concert, and it took place about a year before their concert that literally saved the original home of The Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman. Emmylou Harris has been an outlaw in her own right, assembling some of the best backup bands in the country music industry and challenging the norms. This great show was finally unearthed by Rhino Records and released in 2021.

Today we introduce Harry Nilsson as our featured singer-songwriter, one of the best of his generation and a friend to many, including the members of a band called The Beatles. He was a really talented guy and the world was a better place with him in it.

It’s the Brits all the way around today as we open up with our Album of The Week by The Bee Gees and then move into ‘The British Are Coming’ EP at mid-afternoon.

When the Bee Gees first hit the music scene, my first reaction was “Wow, these guys are good.” And they were. Until they discovered disco. That’s when I made the break. But up until that point, The Bee Gees were a great little band. And so, we play them up until that fateful disco transition. (There are a few other bands that have met that fate, like The Doobie Brothers, but that’s a different story for a different day.) This is the band’s third studio album, but their debut album in the U.S. and UK. Their first two albums were released only in Australia and New Zealand.

Innervisions was singer, songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder’s sixteenth studio album, and it is largely viewed as his transition from ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder to a more mature, socially conscious musician. It was released on August 3, 1973 on the Tamla label (a subsidiary of Motown). At the 16th Grammy Awards it won for Best Album of The Year, and Living For The City won for Best R&B Song. Today is the final airing of Shawn Colvin as this week’s featured singer-songwriter, a woman who turned the folk music genre on its head with her 1998 release A Few Small Repairs and her double-winning Grammy hit Sunny Came Home. I never had the pleasure of seeing Shawn Colvin live, but I did see her in a great multi-artist concert joining friends Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, David Lindley and Bruce Hornsby back in the late 90’s. We’ll be airing that concert next week, in fact.
