Welcome Weekenders! It’s ‘Ode To Morning’, Some Live ELO and a Bob Dylan ‘Spotlight’, Saturday, November 23, 2024

Good morning, weekenders! We’ve got a fine lineup in The Lounge today with our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, Jeff Lynne’s ELO live in London and a Bob Dylan ‘Spotlight’ feature!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

The other day we started with songs about the night. Today we flip the switch to morning with Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt and more!

4:00 p.m. Electric Light Orchestra Live at The Paris Theatre, London, UK, April 19, 1973

Today they’re called Jeff Lynne’s ELO and rightly so. They just went on their farewell tour. If I were still attending big venue events, I’d have seen them in Boston. I’m not. But I’ve seen them twice before and they never disappoint. Today we have them live from the Paris Theatre in London.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bob Dylan

Singer, songwriter, poet, Nobel Prize Winner and veteran of 60 years in the music business, we put Bob Dylan ‘In the Spotlight’ tonight to close out our programming.

Another bleak, rainy day here but we really need it. Massachusetts has been under a fire watch for weeks now, so there’s no complaining. Besides, we’ve got the best music on the planet. Great day to tune us in. The button is below.

Saturday Brings Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, The Pre-Disco Bee Gees, and The Allman Brothers Band, October 26, 2024

Welcome Weekenders! Today we open with our ‘Ode to Morning’ multi-artist EP, followed by the Bee Gees In The Spotlight and The Allman Brothers Band in concert later.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We start the day with the sun coming up and songs about the morning from Hoyt Axton, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Graham Parson, Taj Mahal, Simon & Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Jonathan Edwards, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

There are a lot of before-and-after bands, like The Doobies before Michael McDonald (the old Doobies were better). Before the Bee Gees somehow managed to immerse themselves in disco, there was a really great and innovative rock band in there. That is the band we celebrate with this playlist. You won’t hear Stayin’ Alive here or any other Bee Gees music from that phase. That’s a promise.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, Middle Georgia Raceway, Byron, GA, July 3-5, 1970

The Brothers bring it to the Atlanta International Pop Festival to close out Saturday’s musical festivities. But the music continues 24/7.

We’ve made it to the weekend, my friends, and that is always a good thing. After today, I get two days off so that I can start lining up next week’s music. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. The button is below.

On Thursday It’s Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, America In The Spotlight and a Tribute to Bluesman John Mayall, July 25, 2024

Good morning, musicologists. Today we celebrate the life and music of the Godfather of British Blues, John Mayall. But first, it’s our ‘Ode to Morning’ EP and America.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

Yesterday we started out with songs about the night; today we do the opposite with Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Badfinger, Chris Hillman and more!

Many people in my life think it’s “weird” that I like America, but they were one of the finest folk-rock bands of the seventies and definite hit makers. Underrated is a word I’d use for them. They made some madly innovative music during their tour. Today they’re In the Spotlight.

8:00 p.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live in 1967, Somewhere in London

This is one of those collections of never-before-heard live songs by the master and his mates. The songs were recorded by a Dutch fan in a series of five London clubs during 1967. This was a very interesting iteration of The Bluesbreakers, a band that gave many blues stars their start. It included Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, later to become two different version of Fleetwood Mac.Today we pay tribute to the Godfather of British Blues.

It’s Marathon Monday Here and We’ve Got The Heartbreakers in N.C., The Rascals, and The Doors in Detroit, April 15, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We stay out of Boston today because it’s Marathon Monday here and the town is crawling with runners and fans alike, but we’ve got a great music marathon going on here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s today’s musical marathon:

We have a live performance by the Heartbreakers that we’ve never aired here before to start your day. This one comes from 1989 and is on the grounds of the University of North Carolina. It’s a great 16-song set.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Rascals

Undoubtedly one of the best bands of the sixties and early seventies. Between 1966 and 1968 this band owned the airwaves, charting nine singles in the Billboard Top 20 and they were all killers.

7:00 p.m. The Doors Live at Cobo Arena, Detroit, MI, May 8, 1970

Tonight we give you The Doors live from Detroit on the Roadhouse Blues Tour. A great way to close out the programming.

We kick off the morning with songs about the morning. The last EP we heard was about night. This one’s about morning with Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Pure Prairie League, Badfinger, Chris Hillman and more!

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, Middle Georgia Raceway, Byron, GA, July 3 & 5, 1970

The brothers aren’t really “pop” singers but this wasn’t really a “pop” festival either. That was a popular catch word for popular music, not a specific reference to a music genre. But I digress. What could be better than closing out the day with some great blues-rock from the Allman Brothers Band?

We’re on 24/7, not just when we’re in program mode. We have international listeners who are on all night long. If you wake up and you can’t sleep, tune us in. All you need is the button below. We’re guaranteed to make your life better.
