We Start With The Traveling Wilburys, Then It’s Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Wide Open Stream Tonight, Sunday, October 6, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. It’s Sunday Funday in The Mermaid Lounge and we continue on with our Tom Petty celebration with a great Traveling Wilburys entry.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. The Traveling Wilburys: The Bootleg Collection

Always a favorite, both the supergroup (and this is a true supergroup) and this playlist of outtakes, alternate takes and extended sessions. What we essentially have here is five friends who harnessed that friendship to create some of the most amazing music on the planet. Roy was the first to go. Then George. Then Tom. But their music rocks on.

2:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Life on the road is a popular topic in popular music. Just ask Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Rush, Buffalo Springfield, The Guess Who and more!

We then return to our big, wide Open Stream to take us through to morning. We’ll be back to close out our Tom Petty celebration with a Fillmore trifecta tomorrow! The button is below.

Spend Sunday With Donovan, The Zombies Live in Concert and Songs About The Night Later, on September 22, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and weekenders! We are here with a Donovan Spotlight feature, a reunited Zombies concert from 2008 and our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Donovan

We open up the festivities with Scottish musician, songwriter and record producer, Donovan, who emerged from the British folk scene in 1965. He was a fixture on the charts and the radio with a string of hits in the late sixties that have stood the test of time.

The Zombies are one of those sixties bands that kind of fell through the cracks for some inexplicable reason. As one music critic noted, perhaps it was because there was so much good music at the time.Their legend has surely grown over the decades and it is clear that they were one of the finest, yet most underappreciated, bands of the sixties. By the time of this reunion tour, some of the members were gone. However, vocalist Colin Blunstone and keyboard wizard Rod Argent were there.

5:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We close out the programming and move into the after dark hours with songs about the night from Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Doors, John Cougar Mellencamp, Poco, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Buffet, Bonnie Raitt and more!

Today It’s Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, a Phoebe Snow Spotlight & Live Heartbreakers, on Saturday, September 7, 2024

Good morning, weekenders! Once again, we start the weekend off with a bang, including a brand new Spotlight featuring the late, great Phoebe Snow that has been a long time coming.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Life on the road is a popular music topic of note. You’ll hear Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Guy Clark, Joan Baez, Asleep At the Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Ray Charles, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Del Shannon and more!

Phoebe Snow was an amazing singer, songwriter and guitarist who shot into the public sphere with her song Poetry Man back in 1974. She released a series of great albums before fading from the music scene to take care of her daughter, who was born with severe brain damage. She cared for her daughter until her death at the age of 31. While this undoubtedly nearly ended her career, Snow left a legacy of great music behind.

8:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Docks, Hamburg, Germany, April 23, 1999

The Heartbreakers tear it up at The Docks in a performance recorded for the German TV show, Rockpalast.

Hey, it’s the weekend. There’s absolutely no excuse for not tuning us in. We’re totally free 24/7 and circulate 27,000 music files on a continuous basis. We break that up a bit with some great programming. The button’s below.

We close out the festivities with Warren Zevon in a performance from 1988 that was broadcast live on the BBC. I saw Mr. Zevon only once, but it was a memorable performance indeed at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston. Small venues are so much better.

Here we go! We’re at the weekend, and we are primed and ready to play some great music this weekend. We are also beginning to plan some special summer programming, which we shall not reveal here. Suffice it to say, all you need to do is use the button below.

Monday We Open With Leon Russell and Close With Our ‘Money Honey’ Playlist; The Wilburys Are In Between, June 10, 2024

Yes, work is back in the picture but Monday isn’t all that bad. We open with live Leon Russell and close with songs about money. In between, it’s a Traveling Wilburys Spotlight.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

Nothing like a little taste of live Leon Russell to get you going in the morning.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Traveling Wilburys

Five friends who loved to hang out and play music together. No pressures of the road. The Traveling Wilburys never really traveled. But I’ll tell you what: They are the greatest supergroup in music history. See for yourself.

7:00 p.m. Money, Honey: Various Artists

We close it out today with a multi-artist playlist of songs about money. You’ll hear Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Warren Zevon, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, J. J. Cale, Slim Harpo, Chuck Berry, Laura Nyro, Randy Newman, Willie Nelson, Barrett Strong and more!

Sunday’s Fare Consists of The Who, ‘The British Are Coming’ EP and a Jeff Lynne Spotlight Feature, June 9, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! Today we keep it decidedly British with our first live Who performance, our ‘British Are Coming’ EP and a Spotlight featuring the great Jeff Lynne.

Here’s your musical journey for today:

This is our very first ‘live’ Who performance and it won’t be our last as we broaden our horizons. This was an amazing show, played in the rain, on their Who Rocks America Tour in support of their album It’s Hard. It was also billed as their final tour.

1:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

Music from The British Invasion and beyond with The Who, The Beatles, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Steward, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, The Rolling Stones, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jeff Lynne

He’s not just the genius behind Electric Light Orchestra (as if that wasn’t enough), he began his career with The Move. He was also the esteemed Otis Wilbury, co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys along with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy Orbison. Let’s not forget that he’s a solo artist and a producer for many artists, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That’s what I call a great resume.

We Start With ‘The Psychedelic Express,’ Then Move to Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs On Sunday, May 26, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We move into our Memorial Day weekend programming today with Tom Petty’s Top 100. Tomorrow, we close out the weekend with The Beatles Top 100. But before all this, we kick off with ‘The Psychedelic Express.’

Here’s your holiday Sunday playlist:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

One of our favorite EPs because psychedelic music is one of our favorite genres to explore. You’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs

It’s time to pull out our House Bands for the holiday, and we start with Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs as we listen to his music with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys and as a solo artist. And these are in no particular order. We don’t have the infrastructure to handle votes from listeners, so we took a very scientific method and pulled song names out of a bucket. (No laughing.) From our perspective, all of his songs are great, so it doesn’t really matter what song is arbitrarily number one and which is number one hundred. Just enjoy the experience!

Kick back and relax with us this weekend. It was a beautiful day yesterday here in the Boston area, but it’s pouring rain today and it’s the perfect day to wrap your head around some great music.
