We Kick Off Tom Petty Month With a Single Agenda Item: Our ‘Tom Petty’s Top 100’ EP, Monday, October 2, 2023

Good morning, Petty lovers! Six years ago today, Tom Petty passed away into rock n’ roll heaven to hang out with Roy Orbison and George Harrison again. Or at least that’s what I’d envision were that a reality. It freaked me out like John Lennon’s death freaked me out.

We kick off Tom Petty Month With One Agenda Item:

10:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Top 100 Best Songs

Tom Petty passed away six years ago today, on October 2, 2017, one week after the final live show of the Heartbreakers’ 40th Anniversary Tour at the Hollywood Bowl. Dr. Tom Petty left behind a volume of work, some perhaps still unexplored, to keep his musical vision alive.

Today we have Tom Petty’s Top 100 songs from his time as a Heartbreaker, a member of The Traveling Wilburys and founder of Mudcrutch. Then, there’s his solo career. Let’s not forget that (even though his fellow Heartbreakers were always present).

Come on in! It’s Tom Petty Month and the music’s just fine. When we started this, we saturated the airwaves for a couple of years. We’ve toned it down a bit. You’ll hear a couple of Petty things per week for a month. We’re ready to rock and roll and remember the leader of one of our House Bands.

We’re Back to Simple Sunday Here With Our AOW by The Band and the ‘Under The Influence’ EP, September 17, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’re back to our keep-it-simple Sunday mode here with our Album of The Week and our ‘Under The Influence’ EP.

Here’s you musical landscape:

A Mermaid Lounge favorite is back today. We’re of the opinion that The Band never made a bad album. This one is no exception, although it didn’t get the attention it deserved after their incredible run of Music From Big Pink, The Band (the amazing brown album) and Stage Fright. It’s our Album of The Week starting today.

3:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Likewise, we believe there’s nothing like being under the influence on the weekend. You’ll hear from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

We Start a New Month With Our ‘What’s in A Name’ EP, Bob Dylan’s Final AOW Spin, and the Multi-Faceted Jeff Lynne as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, Saturday, July 1, 2023

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to the dog days of summer here in The Mermaid Lounge! We kick off a new month in fine form today. Read on for details!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. What’s in a Name: Various Artists

One of our newer EP’s is airing this morning. We just introduced this one last month, and you’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan FINAL AIRING!

We say farewell to Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline today, undoubtedly one of his best albums ever. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection for you!

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Jeff Lynne NEW!

Here’s a guy who doesn’t get the attention he should. Most people know him as the leader of Electric Light Orchestra, but Jeff Lynne is more than that. He’s one of the most prolific singer-songwriters on the planet. Before ELO, there was a sixties band called The Move, which recorded and released the original version of Do Ya. He was a founding member of The Traveling Wilburys. And finally, he’s a record producer who worked with both George Harrison and Tom Petty over his long career. Tonight we introduce him as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

For most people it’s a long weekend where we’ll celebrate our alleged freedom (although all I see from the GOP are rights being rolled back). All that propaganda aside, it’s absolutely not propaganda that we play the best music on the planet totally free with no commercial interruption on a 24/7 schedule. Give us a shot.

We End the Month in Style and Kick Off the July 4 Weekend With Petty’s Top 100 Songs and Townes Van Zandt’s Final Turn as Our Singer-Songwriter on Friday, June 30, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We kicked off Memorial Day weekend with The Beatles Top 100 and today we kick off July 4th weekend with Tom Petty’s Top 100.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs

I might add, in no particular order. That would be too tall a task. This is Petty as founding member of The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch and The Traveling Wilburys, as well as a solo artist. We celebrated our ‘other’ House Band at the beginning of summer, and we celebrate (mostly) The Heartbreakers today as we enter the dog days of summer.

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Townes Van Zandt FINAL AIRING!

Today is Townes Van Zandt’s final turn as our featured singer-songwriter, but it won’t be the last time you hear from him here. We’ve gotten our hands on some great live performances. Tomorrow we’ll have a brand new singer-songwriter to introduce.

In between our only two pieces of programming today, we’ve got our big, wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. We never really know what she has in store for us. That’s entirely up to her, but we do know that she has impeccable taste in music.

We’re Back to Monday and We’ve Got Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Fats Domino In the Spotlight Later, April 24, 2023

Yes, the work week returns and even I am stuck working on what would normally be my day off, but I digress. We’ve got a great EP of traveling music today and Fats Domino, a true rock and roll pioneer, In the Spotlight later.

Here’s your Monday musical landscape:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Traveling is a popular music topic, just ask Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep At The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina and Buffalo Springfield. You’ll hear all of them and more in this EP, which is just about five hours of uninterrupted traveling music.

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Fats Domino

I’m not sure anyone was actually playing rock and roll before Fats Domino. He certainly was in the forefront of the entire musical movement and is considered one of its founding fathers. We’ve got him In the Spotlight tonight. He’s a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

Before, in between and after we’ve got our wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. We’re playing music 24/7 with no commercial interruption. All you need is an open tab and a mouse, and musical mecca is at your fingertips.

We Leap Over the Hump With Our ‘Color My World’ EP, Our AOW, and The Animals In the Spotlight, Thursday, March 2, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We’re over the week’s hump as we start the downslide to the weekend, and we’ve got three slots of great programming for you today.

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

We start out with songs that refer to colors in the title, lyrics or both! You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Valerie Carter, The Kinks, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, Jonathan Edwards, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, John Hiatt, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Donovan, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Elton John, Procol Harum, Electric Light Orchestra, Amy Winehouse, The Who, Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Sam & Dave, Jefferson Airplane, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, The Hollies, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Booker T & The MG’s, Lucinda Williams, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Cougar Mellencamp and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Innervisions by Stevie Wonder

Many have said that this is the album where Stevie Wonder took a giant leap into more self awareness and social consciousness. It certainly helped him shed that “Little” Stevie Wonder aura.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Animals

The Animals were a great blues-rock band founded in the early sixties in Castle upon Tyne in England. Their driving force was the great voice of Eric Burdon.

We’re on 24/7 at no charge to you. No surprises. No lie. This is truly a labor of love. It’s all about the music. Come see for yourself.

Saturday The Mermaid Lounge Celebrates George Harrison’s 80th Birthday as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, Among Other Things, February 25, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We are here and today we intro George Harrison as this week’s featured singer-songwriter on what would be his 80th birthday. But there’s more!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Canciones di Mi Padre by Linda Ronstadt FINAL AIRING!

Sadly, the final airing of this outstanding effort by Linda Ronstadt is here. We start off early to day for those global listeners who have not yet had a chance to hear it. Ronstadt took a stand with her record company to make the album, and she faced down the naysayers predicting the destruction of her career as it became an instant global hit, won her a Grammy, and is the biggest selling non-English album of all time.

11:00 a.m. The Sixties Rotation: Volume Two

Volume two of this mix covers the mid-to-late part of the sixties, and you’ll hear The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, the Spencer Davis Group, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Beatles, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Jimmy Cliff, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Zombies, Donovan, Velvet Underground, B.B. King, Led Zeppelin and more!

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of George Harrison NEW!

Today we celebrate what would have been George Harrison’s 80th birthday. Hard to believe. We feature over two hours of music from his years with The Beatles, his solo career, and his time with The Traveling Wilburys. George spent many years in the shadow of the Lennon-McCartney songwriting juggernaut, but when he burst out he did it in grand style, distinguishing himself songwriter of immense talent.

It is an excellent day to tune us in, folks, but we admit we say that several times a week. The only way you’ll understand why we say it is if you give us a try. The best thing of all is that it won’t cost you a cent. Ever. You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. What could be better?

It’s Wilbury Wednesday Here in The Lounge as We Bring You The Bootlegs, Followed by Laura Nyro and a New Elvis Presley Spotlight as We Celebrate His Birthday, January 11, 2023

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today we have our first Wilbury Wednesday of the new year and we belatedly celebrate The King’s 88th birthday (this past Sunday). We’re sometimes more than a day late but we’re never a dollar short.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. Wilbury Wednesday: The Bootleg Series

Yep. It’s all here. Outtakes. Alternate versions. Special recording sessions. Stuff that was never released and stuff that was from the absolute best supergroup on the planet, bar none.

3:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Laura Nyro

We give Laura Nyro her second airing of three today as this week’s featured Singer-Songwriter. Our final airing will be sometime on Friday as we get ready to introduce a new artist on Saturday.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Elvis Presley NEW!

There are several founding artists of rock n’ roll, but Elvis made the music accessible to all as we began a great revolution in music. This past Sunday would have been The King’s 88th birthday. In celebration, although belatedly, we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

We’re at midweek, people. It’s all downhill toward the weekend from here, and we’ve got the best music on the planet to help your journey more pleasant. We are on 24/7 at no charge to you. We do not accept commercial advertising or employ chatty DJs who love the sound of their own voice. The Music Mermaid is having none of that.

Heading Toward The Weekend With Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, Our AOW, and Beatle Songs With Character on Thursday, January 5, 2023

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again on yet another rainy morning. This makes three in a row here in the Boston area. Plenty of rain; no snow. Highly unusual. But hey, here in The Mermaid Lounge, the living is easy and the music is outstanding!

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, the Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles,The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, The Doors, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

7:00 p.m. Beatle Songs With Character UPDATED!

The Beatles loved to name drop as you will see. They invented characters like Mr. Kite, Maxwell of silver hammer fame, Lucy who floated around the sky with diamonds. You’ll also hear about the man in the mack, a barber on Penny Lane, Prudence (who was actually Mia Farrow’s sister), Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and mother Mary. This playlist has recently been expanded and updated, so give it a listen!

We’re sitting here waiting for you to join your friends from around the world in discovering what great music we play 24/7 at no cost to you. Your money is no good here. We’re also advertising free, and our disc jockeys are virtually mute. Take a spin. You’ve got absolutely nothing to lose.
