Saturday Brings ‘The Psychedelic Express’ EP, Live Traffic, Some New Beatles, and One-Hit Wonders, July 27, 2024

Good morning, music lovers everywhere! We’ve got a pretty full slate today because we’ve added a late-night playlist at the request of a couple of listeners outside the U.S.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

We hop on board promptly at 9:00 a.m. for a musical mind-bending trip to the past when psychedelia was king (or queen, as it were). You’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more.

4:00 p.m. Traffic Live at Woodstock ’94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, New York, August 14, 1994

It sure wasn’t Woodstock ’69 but, nevertheless, Traffic was there!

We made this one at the suggestion of a listener from Denmark: Beatle songs with the words sun or sunshine in the title, lyrics or both! If we’ve missed any, please let us know in the comments and we’ll ad them before the next airing!

11:00 p.m. One-Hit Wonders: The Sixties

We repeat this playlist from a week or so ago at the request of a few of our global listeners who missed it!

Here’s your musical lineup:

The reigning queen of blues-rock with Big Brother & The Holding Company, The Kozmic Blues Band and as a solo artist kicks off the festivities at 10:00 a.m.

Who knew there were so many songs about shoes? You’ll hear from Steve Winwood, Elvis Presley, The Eagles, Little Feat, Norah Jones, Laura Nyro, Leon Russell, Traffic, The Beatles, Supertramp, Betty Everett, The Band, Paul Simon and more!

Today we put him In The Spotlight singing his own music.

We Take a Trip On ‘The Psychedelic Express,’ Then It’s Live Jimi Hendrix and Carly Simon, Thursday, June 27, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We are officially over the hump and are on the downslide to the weekend. Today we start out on ‘The Psychedelic Express,’ then it’s on to some live music.

Here’s your mind bending lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Truly a favorite genre in The Mermaid Lounge and, once again, pioneered by The Fab Four. In addition to The Beatles, you’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, the Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondell, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970

We’ve got Hendrix in a great live performance this afternoon that took place just months before his untimely death.

It was Jackie Onassis’ idea for Carly Simon to perform at Grand Central Station as a precursor to her first tour in 14 years. We’ve got it for you here this evening.

Sunday’s Fare Consists of The Who, ‘The British Are Coming’ EP and a Jeff Lynne Spotlight Feature, June 9, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! Today we keep it decidedly British with our first live Who performance, our ‘British Are Coming’ EP and a Spotlight featuring the great Jeff Lynne.

Here’s your musical journey for today:

This is our very first ‘live’ Who performance and it won’t be our last as we broaden our horizons. This was an amazing show, played in the rain, on their Who Rocks America Tour in support of their album It’s Hard. It was also billed as their final tour.

1:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

Music from The British Invasion and beyond with The Who, The Beatles, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Steward, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, The Rolling Stones, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jeff Lynne

He’s not just the genius behind Electric Light Orchestra (as if that wasn’t enough), he began his career with The Move. He was also the esteemed Otis Wilbury, co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys along with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy Orbison. Let’s not forget that he’s a solo artist and a producer for many artists, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That’s what I call a great resume.

We’ve Got ‘Ode To Morning,’ a Carole King Spotlight, and a Steve Winwood History Lesson on Thursday, May 23, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to the downslide to the weekend! We’re moving through this day in fine style with some great music.

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

Yesterday we started out with songs about the night. Today, we get it right with Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Carole King

From her days as a songwriter in the famed Brill Building to this very day, Carole King has been a force in the music world. A true legend in her time.

8:00 p.m. Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group Super Jam

Or, Steve Winwood 1.0. We close out the programming with another musical legend.

The weather is beginning to cool a bit, and that’s just fine with me. May is a bit too early for 90 degrees. Nevertheless, we are here in The Mermaid Lounge for your listening pleasure, where the music is hot but the atmosphere is cool.

Thursday Brings The ‘Trio’ Sessions, ‘Repeat After Me,’ and Traffic Live at The Fillmore, April 2, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’re back at it as we continue Fillmore Week with Traffic, but first it’s The ‘Trio’ Sessions with Dolly, Linda and Emmylou and ‘Repeat After Me’.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Complete Trio Sessions: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris

We kick off the morning with a bona fide supergroup but, of course, all these years later there’s still plenty of misogyny in the music business. So, nobody talks about these three living legends as a “supergroup.” But that’s exactly what Trio is. Today we give you the outtakes, remakes, remixes, alternate versions and final product all rolled into one.

3:00 p.m. Repeat After Me: Various Artists

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and we’ve got the proof right here. You’ll hear CSNY cover Joni Mitchell, Gregg Allman cover Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt cover Little Feat, and Three Dog Night cover Laura Nyro. And that’s just for starters.

We’ve had this one hanging around but haven’t aired it until this evening. It’s about time, don’t you think? Yeah.

We Motor Along With ‘The Psychedelic Express,’ Marvin Gaye and The Beatles on Thursday, April 25, 2024

We are careening toward the weekend again, and we’re taking ‘The Psychedelic Express’ today. Then it’s a Marvin Gaye ‘Spotlight’ feature and psychedelia from The Fab Four.

Here’s your psychedelic lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

You don’t need no stinkin’ tickets to ride on the psychedelic express with Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, The Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more! It’s five hours of mind-bending music!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye isn’t called The Prince of Soul for nothing. This brilliant singer-songwriter helped shape the Motown sound in the sixties, first as an in-house session player and later as a successful solo artist. He’s In The Spotlight this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles: Tripping The Light Fantastic

We close this psychedelic adventure with The Fab Four. It should be no surprise to anyone that The Beatles pioneered the psychedelic sound and embraced it before anyone else. We close the day with their contributions to the genre.

I’ll be laboring in hardware hell while The Music Mermaid joins you on your psychedelic journey this fine day. If you are a fan of the genre like me, you will not be disappointed. Best of all, we’re totally free and devoid of commercial interruption all day long.

4:00 p.m. The Kinks Live at The Hippodrome Theatre, London, UK, July 14, 1974

This afternoon we’ve got a great live performance by a legendary British Invasion band, led by the fighting Davies brothers.

We’ve got a fun new playlist about the Fab Four to close out the programming. We give you the Beatle tracks that open with great keyboard riffs. If we’ve missed any, please let us know!

We Take a Trip On ‘The Psychedelic Express’, Then It’s Willie Nelson and ‘Live’ Traffic, Wednesday, February 21, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We open and close the programming today with great bands from the psychedelic music era. In between, it’s outlaw Willie Nelson.

Willie’s back for his second spin as our featured singer-songwriter.

We close out the psychedelic programming with the amazing Steve Winwood and Traffic, live from the Fillmore East in New York.

Sunday Brings “Late For The Sky” As Our AOW Plus A Trip On ‘The Psychedelic Express’, January 21, 2024

Here’s your musical lineup:

Our first entry into the 50 Club is a great Jackson Browne LP released on September 13, 1974. It was Browne’s third studo release, and peaked at no. 14 on Billboard’s Pop Charts. In 2020, the album was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

The album would also continue to build Jackson Browne’s legend as a premier songwriter. The title track would be used in the Martin Scorcese film Taxi Driver. Both Fountain of Sorrow and Before the Deluge would be covered by Joan Baez. For A Dancer would be covered by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris on their Western Wall album.
