It’s Sunday In The Lounge With ‘The Original Sixties’ Rotation, The Byrds, and Van Morrison, May 19, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! This is a sixties trifecta today and that’s always a good thing. While Van the Man’s live performance wasn’t until the 70’s, let’s remember he started out with a British blues band called Them and hasn’t stopped since.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This would primarily be the early-to-mid phase of the decade, although we all know some later acts have slipped in here (and vice versa when we get to volume two). You will hear The Beatles, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Simon & Garfunkel, Little Eva, The Everly Brothers, The Searchers, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bob Dylan, The Animals, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, The Turtles, James Brown, The Temptations, Del Shannon, Fontella Bass, The Box Tops, Blues Image, Booker T. & The MG’s, The Four Tops and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Byrds

Formed in L.A. in 1964, The Byrds remain a musical stalwart today. Their lineup has changed over the years, with Roger McGuinn being the only consistent member, In spite of that, they made their mark with McGuinn’s jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and their signature harmony vocals, influencing many subsequent acts including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Today they are In The Spotlight.

8:00 p.m. Van Morrison Live at The Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ, October 6, 1979

Van Morrison joins us this evening in The Lounge for a very pleasant interlude of live music.

I am on the run once again this morning, but The Music Mermaid is always here and on duty. She’ll take care of you until I return. As always, we remain free of charge and free of commercial interruptions. Enjoy your day of rest!

8:00 p.m. Laura Nyro Live at The Fillmore East, New York, NY, March 30, 1971

Speaking of brilliant singer-songwriters, here’s one who left the planet far too soon. Her music, however, lives on.

We’re here 24/7 at no charge to the listening public. And no. There isn’t any commercial advertising either. We’re all about the music.

It’s Ry Cooder, The Grateful Dead and Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP Ringing in the Weekend on Saturday, April 20, 2024

Good morning, lovers of 4/20 and music alike! We’ve got some great stuff on tap for you today including a night-time airing of our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP.

Here’s Saturday’s musical mayhem!

10:00 a.m. Ry Cooder Live at The Record Plant, Sausalito, CA, July 7, 1974

Certainly one of the most respected members of the rock music community, Ry Cooder has made some fantastic music over the years. Linda Ronstadt has always said he’s the best guitarist on the planet. He’s another one of our favorites here in The Lounge because he refuses to be defined by any one genre. Give a listen.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Grateful Dead

I’m one of those anomalies in Grateful Dead lore. I prefer their studio work to their live work, although I have great respect for what they do on stage. Today we’ve got their studio work In the Spotlight.

8:00 p.m. Here Comes the Night: Various Artists

We close out the programming with several hours of music about the night in the title, lyrics or both. Open Stream with a Theme is the way we look at it. You’ll hear from Warren Zevon, The J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, the Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The doors, Poco, Emmylou Harris, Don McLean, The Animals, Steve Winwood, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Bonnie Raitt and more!

We’re here 24/7, like even when you wake up in the middle of the night and join the global universe. We’re totally free, no surprises and not just for a test run, but for good. And we do not play commercial advertising. What’s not to love here?

It’s a Busy Monday With ‘Working Songs’, Rickie Lee Jones, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello, February 12, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! I was a bit overexuberant last night and went off the ledge on scheduling today. (We’re actually exploring a bit of late-night programming for our overseas listeners!)

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Working Songs: Various Artists

Quite appropriate on a Monday morning as the work week begins. You’ll hear from The Staple Singers, Van Morrison, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Lennon, Slim Harpo, Neil Young, Jim Croce, Little Feat, Bob Dylan, Jesse Winchester, Maria Muldaur and more!

4:00 p.m.  In The Spotlight: The Music of Rickie Lee Jones

Over five decades this great singer-songwriter has recorded songs in a variety genres, including jazz, rock, pop, soul and R&B.

7:00 p.m.  Van Morrison Live at The Bottom Line, New York, NY, November 1, 1978

Van the Man is a staple around these parts. We haven’t heard him for a while, so we thought it was about time we break him out of mothballs.

Here we have another great Elvis, but it’s Costello. You can love him or hate him, but the man broke barriers and is a hell of a singer-songwriter. He’s one of the very few of his generation that I actually listen to.

Another Monday in paradise…at least for me since my “weekends” fall on Sunday-Monday. We’ve got some great music today and we’re toying with late-night programming. We’ll see how it goes. Our overnight listeners are generally outside the U.S. Give us a listen.

Today It’s ‘Water, Water Everywhere’, Some ‘Live’ Moody Blues and Harry Nilsson on Monday, February 5, 2024

Here’s Monday’s music:

4:00 p.m.  The Moody Blues Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, September 9, 1992

The show included the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and, believe it or not, it was the first time this progressive rock band played live backed by a symphony orchestra.

Today we introduce Harry Nilsson as our featured singer-songwriter, one of the best of his generation and a friend to many, including the members of a band called The Beatles. He was a really talented guy and the world was a better place with him in it.

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Fats Domino & Dave Bartholomew FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of our homage to two pioneers of rock n’ roll. Don’t miss it.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

To close out the programming tonight, we play the music of one of the pioneers of the psychedelic and acid rock sounds. They were only together for four years, but they made an amazing impact on music.

It’s Friday and we’ve made it. It’s going to be a dismal day here, with rain, but we can transcend that with great music. We’ve got it here.
