We do not focus on compilations or post-career releases…just the studio albums released on the Beatles labels over the years (Capitol, Parlophone, Apple, and so on).

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Our number one supergroup here in these parts is for sure The Traveling Wilburys, but these guys are right behind them at number two. Crosby, Stills & Nash were the original configuration, but Neil Young added a dimension that cannot be denied, giving them the Canadian portion of this Canadian-American supergroup. They made some great music together, and we’ve got them In the Spotlight to start off the day.

3:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters: Live at the Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival, Rancho Santa Susanna Community Park, Simi Valley, California, May 23, 2015

We love Cajun-Zydeco here in the Lounge as you know, and we’ve got a short but sweet performance here by the only all-girl Cajun band on the planet. Ann Savoy is the impetus behind the Magnolia Sisters. For those who may not know her, she teamed up with Linda Ronstadt (as the Zozo Sisters) for the brilliant Grammy-nominated album Adieu False Heart, and their remake release of Walk Away Renee. Their music is part of our standard rotation, but we hope to bolster this genre of music in 2022, starting today. We remain on the hunt for more live music from The Magnolia Sisters.

Nope. It’s not quite an EP, but that’s okay because we do need some short players as well. This is all about the color black in song…in the title or lyrics, or both. Our Album of the Week is back at mid-afternoon for it’s next-to-last airing. Many feel this was an unlikely musical duo, but it sure resulted in what I consider to be a masterpiece. I’m not the only one.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Warren Zevon

The excitable boy is back In the Spotlight. We haven’t heard this playlist for a bit, and the time is right. Warren Zevon, undeniably one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of his generation whose compositions became hits for several artists, struggled to break through as a solo artist. That is, until Linda Ronstadt began singing his songs on her albums and on stage. The result was a great career that spanned a quarter century until his untimely death at the age of 56. Tune him in tonight.

Before, in between, and after our programming (which we keep to a minimum), you’ll be listing to all that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. There are days when she even picks up a playlist or two on her own. You’ll never know unless you tune in. By the way, today we add the Republic of Korea and Lithuania to our list of listeners. We lost John Lennon to an assassin 41 years ago yesterday. I remember it well; I was totally stunned. I was still in my twenties and I recall the horror I felt thinking “who the hell would want to kill John Lennon?” Today, we celebrate the music John Lennon left us as the heart and soul of The Beatles, as a solo artist, and with the various iterations of The Plastic Ono Band.

This was undoubtedly one of the most amazing performances I have ever witnessed. It was billed as The Two of Us, but it was really in support of their great duet album, Western Wall, The Tucson Sessions recorded at the Arizona Inn.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to this week’s AOW, Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection. (I repeat this shit every week, don’t I?)

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This one’s not our Album of The Week this week because it has already been our AOW once. But in the midst of Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge, we believe this album begs replaying. According to producer Ryan Ulyate, this was one of those albums where Petty kept coming in with great songs…to the point where fifteen were included here. Released on June 15, 2010, it was Petty’s first new album with the band in eight years and the consensus everywhere was that it was well worth the wait.

Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate jam band. The boys are in fine form here.

And yesterday, Paul Simon turned 80 years old. Today we put Paul Simon In the Spotlight with music from his Simon & Garfunkel days as well as from his solo career. Happy Belated Birthday, Paul. We’re sometimes a day late, but never a dollar short.

Our second-to-last airing is today, with our final airing coming on Saturday. Get in on it while you can. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon NEW!

You know, there’s lots of negative things to talk about where Warren Zevon is concerned. He burned a lot of bridges. He had his demons. But he was, very simply, one of the best singer-songwriters on the planet. Linda Ronstadt proved that several times over. Excitable Boy is one of the best albums ever made. I can’t find one throw-away song on it. Produced by Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, Zevon’s third studio album was released on January 18, 1978. Musicians who played on the album were some of the best-know studio musicians in the business in the 70’s including Russ Kunkel, Rick Marotta, and Mick Fleetwood taking turns on drums, and guitarists Danny Korchmar, Kenny Edwards, Bob Glaub, John McVie, Leland Sklar, and Waddy Wachtel. Background vocals were provided by Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, Jennifer Warnes, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, and Kenny Edwards. Enjoy.
