Our Album of the Week is back at mid-afternoon for it’s next-to-last airing. Many feel this was an unlikely musical duo, but it sure resulted in what I consider to be a masterpiece. I’m not the only one.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Warren Zevon

The excitable boy is back In the Spotlight. We haven’t heard this playlist for a bit, and the time is right. Warren Zevon, undeniably one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of his generation whose compositions became hits for several artists, struggled to break through as a solo artist. That is, until Linda Ronstadt began singing his songs on her albums and on stage. The result was a great career that spanned a quarter century until his untimely death at the age of 56. Tune him in tonight.

Before, in between, and after our programming (which we keep to a minimum), you’ll be listing to all that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. There are days when she even picks up a playlist or two on her own. You’ll never know unless you tune in. By the way, today we add the Republic of Korea and Lithuania to our list of listeners. This great album was a collaborative effort between what many consider to be two unlikely vocalists in Alison Krauss (Union Station) and Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin). Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, he hand-picked all the songs. Released in October 2007, Raising Sand won Album of The Year at the 2008 Americana Music Awards, and at the 2009 Grammy Awards. I have to tell you that I personally have a love-hate relationship with Led Zeppelin most of the time (I like some of their stuff; but not all) and have been ambivalent about Robert Plant overall. But this album? It’s a major winner.

The chicks are back in charge of The Mermaid Lounge today, and they make our siren’s job easy. The venue was not listed in the title because this was mostly recorded during their 2002 tour at The Louisville Palace. Only one song, Down To The River To Pray, was recorded at another venue. This isn’t like real estate, location doesn’t matter. Alison Krauss & Union Station are great no matter where they play.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Barn by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

We give you this warning every week. We’re down to our last two airings of this great album. The final airing will be Saturday. On Sunday, we’ve got a brand new album lined up and ready to go.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

Badfinger was a great power pop band who recorded a string of great hits during the 70’s. They began their career as The Iveys, and they were indeed the only bona fide stars ever signed by The Beatles to Apple Records. Their final story was a sad one. The band was fleeced by its manager (not the Beatles), and two band members committed suicide, including Pete Ham, their leader. Nevertheless, while they were on the Apple label, they made some of the greatest music on the planet. There are some songs you can’t help but associate with movies and TV shows. My favorite Badfinger song, Baby Blue, will forever be emblazoned in my brain as the song that closed the great series, Breaking Bad.

Undoubtedly one of my very favorite bands of all time here, and the grand daddies of Southern rock. This is their performance at Woodstock ’94 (not to be confused with the real Woodstock).

John Dawson Winter III is one of our favorite bluesmen here in The Mermaid Lounge. He’s got his own high-energy blues-rock style. Although not a pure bluesman, Johnny Winter was sought out by other bluesmen and jammed with many, including Muddy Waters, Roy Head and the Traits, Mike Bloomfield, Willie Dixon, and Big Walter Horton. Winter was groundbreaking in many ways and was recognized as one of the best guitarists in the business. You can learn more about him right here. Today, we kick off Tuesday Bluesday by putting him In the Spotlight.
