It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

The ladies return to take you through the afternoon and evening, making it clear that they are not second class citizens on this station. It’s rare that we choose a Greatest Hits album as our Album of The Week, but there are those moments in music when it must be done. For those who are only familiar with the current iteration of Fleetwood Mac, this is not how they began their career. During the sixties, when the band came to be, it was a British blues-rock band led by a great guitarist named Peter Green. His version of Fleetwood Mac remains our favorite here in the lounge. Etta James’ career began the year I was born, in 1954. Right up through 2012, her big, earthy voice has interpreted many genres, including R & B/soul, the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll. She gained fame with several hits, including Tell Mama, At Last, and I’d Rather Go Blind. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999). 11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Although many have not heard of Tracy Nelson, she’s been around for quite some time. Since her career started, she has recorded more than 20 albums. Her first album, Deep Are The Roots, was an acoustic blues album recorded in Chicago and released in 1965. While in Chicago she met and learned from many blues icons, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Otis Spann. She also fronted a band called Mother Earth which shared the Fillmore concert stage with The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Her signature song, Down So Low, was written and recorded by Nelson around the Mother Earth time, but has also been covered by Linda Ronstadt, Maria Mudaur, Ellen McIlwaine, and Etta James. Tune this woman in.

I was multi-tasking as I wrote today’s blog entry and I came across this article about Janis Joplin. I found it quite perceptive and thought I’d share it with you.

Shawn Colvin has been at it for decades. She learned guitar at the age of ten, and grew up listening to her father’s music collection, which included recordings of Pete Seeger and The Kingston Trio. In 1996, she released her album A Few Small Repairs, and her resulting hit Sunny Came Home became her launching point, spending four weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It 1998, Sunny Came Home won Grammys for both Song and Record of the Year. Today, we put the music of Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight.

Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate road jam band. This one’s from the Cape Cod Coliseum, a venue which many claims feels like it’s “in the middle of nowhere.” Funny, I don’t remember that. Then again, I don’t remember a lot about my trips to the Cape Cod Coliseum, to be honest.

Great day to tune us in, as always. I know I say that every day, but I also mean it every day. Hey, look, where else do you get to try something out for free. In my experience, new “experiences” always seem to require a credit card with the caveat that you can cancel at any time. Well, that’s not the way we do business around here.
