We’re past the mid-point of Tom Petty Month here and we feel we’ve shown some restraint here. This week, however, the action ramps up as Wednesday we celebrate Tom’s birthday. This particular playlist is one of our favorites. Everyone knows the Heartbreaker hits, but Tom Petty made a lot of music in his day. What we give you here are the lesser-knowns. For those who are lovers of his hits, this will be a revelation. For those who have delved into all of the Petty archives, this will be a celebration.

This is just over three hours of music recorded during The Heartbreakers’ legendary residency at The Fillmore West back in 1997. It is testament to the fact that this band is undoubtedly one of the greatest bands ever to step onto a stage and engage with an audience. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen better, and I’ve seen a hell of a lot of live performances in my lifetime.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One FINAL AIRING

We bid a fond farewell to Volume One of the Traveling Wilburys two great albums. We’ll have the other sometime during Tom Petty Month for sure.

Good Morning, Pettyologists! It’s Rocktober, and that makes it Tom Petty Month. Now, we are not out to compete with any other music outlet by any stretch. But you’ll be seeing a bit more of The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys than usual this month. And that’s a good thing.

We kick off Tom Petty month with Hypnotic Eye, the final studio album by The Heartbreakers released in 2014. It is not our album of the week because it has already been our album of the week. The reason we kick off with this album is it’s hard for a band to be this good nearly forty years on. In my mind, this album competes with Damn The Torpedos as The Heartbreakers’ best album. And The Heartbreakers were still packing them in. On the Hypnotic Eye tour, they played to 40,000 people in Boston’s historic Fenway Park.

Today’s the day, folks. We kick off Tom Petty month. Our photo today is not meant to be morbid. We celebrate Tom Petty’s life and contribution to music, both of which were huge. We merely wanted to show the outpouring of fan love that Tom Petty earned over his gigantic career. He is still missed, but his music lives on.

Maria Muldaur is a woman of many musical styles, including folk, jazz, and blues. She began her career in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village during the great American folk music revival of the sixties, and has forged a six-decade career. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons NEW!

Gram Parsons never lived long enough to see just how influential he truly was. He died at the age of 26 from multiple drug use in a Joshua Tree, California, on this very day (September 19) in 1973. It’s only fitting we pay him tribute with our Album of The Week.

Parsons was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist who played with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The International Submarine Band, and as a solo artist. He also collaborated with Emmylou Harris and, in spite of the rumors, they were not lovers. Their connection was music. She, of course, went on to become a country-rock legend.

Gram Parsons brought country to rock n’ roll and helped forge the country-rock genre in the same way that Bob Dylan brought folk to rock. He was that influential in a very short lifetime.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We’re back with the music that helped to bring us to live here in The Mermaid Lounge. This volume focuses more on the mid-to-late sixties. You will hear The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin (with and without her various bands), The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, The Box Tops, Vanilla Fudge, Sly & The Family Stone, The Doors, The Zombies, and many more. Good Morning, Musicologists! Sorry I’m running a tad late, but the old music bat slept in a bit. I needed it. Yesterday, I saw a list of Tom Petty’s Top 50 songs from a radio station and was inspired to share our list with you once again.

Today we give you Petty’s Top 50 songs with the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Wilburys and as a solo artist.

Before we begin, let me say that these are not ranked in any kind of order. That would be totally impossible, I’m afraid, for anyone in The Mermaid Lounge to do. Here we have our version of Petty’s Top 50. This was inspired by a list I posted on Twitter yesterday generated by some radio station somewhere. The songs are from his work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys, and as a solo artist.

Recorded while she was pregnant with her first child, it resulted in two hits: Mockingbird and Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. But personally, I think the best song on the album is Forever My Love.
