Edgar Winter’s heartfelt 17-song tribute to his brother, killer bluesman Johnny Winter, garnered him a 2023 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album just this past week at the age of 76. The Winter brothers are legends in the classic rock arena and, along with Bonnie Raitt (who won this year at the age of 73), just go to prove that the generation of musicians who inspired this radio station have real staying power.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

At mid-afternoon, we turn the whole deal over to the women of music to take us into the evening hours. This is the second airing of Bobbie Gentry as our featured singer-songwriter. She never wanted the limelight. She truly just wanted to write songs for others to sing. But it didn’t work out that way as she charted 11 singles. In the late seventies, she decided she didn’t want to be found and retired from the business. But she left an incredible musical legacy behind.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Ann Peebles NEW!

To be perfectly honest, I never heard about Ann Peebles until I started listening to Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure show on Sirius. You can learn a lot about music history when Petty is the DJ. In fact, some people say his station could be a course in popular music history. Ann Peebles is a R & B and soul singer who became famous in the late seventies for her Memphis soul albums. She is also the composer of the R & B great I Can’t Stand The Rain (which she wrote with her husband Don Bryant and radio broadcaster Bernie Miller). Give her a listen. She’s fantastic.

His songs have been recorded and performed by literally hundreds of artists, including Chrissie Hynde, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur, The Band and many more. He has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his compositions. We have over two hours of music here, and we’ve left so much out that we could have made an EP out of this effort. But we restrained ourselves. Don’t miss this one.

Warren Zevon gets the stage for the second time as this week’s featured Singer-Songwriter in our series. Linda Ronstadt recognized his immense songwriting talents by recording Carmelita and Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Hasten Down The Wind and Mohammed’s Radio. (I love them all but I think Mohammed’s Radio is brilliant.) Warren Zevon also had a great solo career, starting off with his breakthrough album, Excitable Boy, one of our all-time favorites. Tune him in.

Sunday Brings Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” as Our AOW, and the ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, December 11, 2022

It’s a Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge with the threat of what we call a ‘wintry mix’ in the air. That’s when the weather people hedge their bets because they can’t figure out if it’s going to be snow or rain or both. I’m hedging my bets with a nice day indoors listening to some great music!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat NEW!

This was Little Feat’s third studio album, released in 1973, and certainly became a landmark for the band. The title song would go a long way toward establishing the band’s great signature sound. Little Feat also added the great guitarist Paul Barrere and percussionist Sam Clayton. Bassist Kenny Gradney was also added to replace Roy Estrada. It signaled a change of the band’s sound, moving them toward New Orleans R & B and funk.This lineup would endure until Lowell George’s death in 1979 and the band’s subsequent breakup.

This is the Grand Kahuna of our R & B/soul playlists which is all encompassing, and not just dedicated to Motown artists. Good Morning, Sixties Music Lovers! We certainly are all that here in The Mermaid Lounge and today we’ve got the very first playlist and EP that we ever created, along with the 2017 album, Everybody Knows.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins NEW!

And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

We’re back for another airing of the very first playlist we created, and also the first that morphed into an EP.
