Susan Tedeschi has been around for a while, and so has Derek Trucks. But they put it all together in 2011 with the debut album of their fine band, Revelator. If you like blues-rock, this is is where you should be, people. Recorded in Susan and Derek’s Swamp Raga Studios in Jacksonville, Florida, the band shows that they are more than just a great ‘live’ band. Co-produced by Derek Trucks and producer/engineer Jim Scott, Revelator went on to with the Best Blues Album at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, and Derek Trucks has established himself as one of the finest guitar players on the planet. George Harrison’s birthday was on February 25. We may be a bit late here in The Mermaid Lounge on birthdays but we’re never a dollar short. We play Harrison’s best stuff as the lead guitarist of The Beatles, as Nelson Wilbury, and from his solo efforts. Happy Birthday, George.

Donovan was a very big part of the sixties sounds, so his presence in the spotlight today is particularly fitting. His unique sound came from fusing pop, jazz, folk, psychedelic rock and world music. He was a favorite when I was young, and remains so today.

In a few hours, I’ll be digging myself out and heading off to work. But if you don’t have to be anywhere today, this would be a great day to tune us in. All you have to do is give us a shot. And we’re not talking about buying a subscription that you can “cancel anytime.” Don’t you love that shit? We do not require a credit card or a subscription here. The public health is not a political issue, and medical misinformation is not in the public interest. We will neither participate in it nor will we give voice to those who do. Like Eric Clapton. Aside from Neil Young’s stand on the issue, consider that the man is the Energizer Bunny of rock n’ roll, recently releasing his 41st album and his 14th with Crazy Horse. His career has spanned more than a half century, and he is deserving of the spotlight.

It’s A Keep-It-Simple Sunday With A Visit From The Brits and a Brand New Album of The Week, November 28, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a simple recipe for happy today, and it’s really rather simple. We pay homage to our British Invasion innovators with five hours of uninterrupted stream, and give you a great new Album of The Week. The rest is wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid.

These particular festivities begin about mid-afternoon!

11:00 a.m Album of The Week: Rising Sons by Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder NEW!

This is a long story better told here, but I’ll give you the short version. Back in 1965, two 17-year-olds decided not to take the same path as Kyle Rittenhouse, and instead started a band named The Rising Sons. Their names were Ryland Cooder (better known as Ry Cooder) and Henry St. Claire Fredericks (better known as Taj Mahal). Ry Cooder, who Linda Ronstadt continually says is the best guitarist she’s ever met, played six- and twelve-string guitar, mandolin, the bottleneck and slide guitars, and dobro. Taj Mahal played harmonica, piano, and guitar. He was also the vocalist. Other members of the band included guitarist Jesse Lee Kincaid, bassist Gary Marker, and drummer Ed Cassidy (who would go on soon to form the band, Spirit). Their band was short-lived, but both Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal went on to be a couple of the most innovative musicians on the planet. Today, we give you their album, Rising Sons.

We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Saturday is here. The weekend is upon (some of) us. Some of us have one more stint left, and that would be me. But you can be here with us in The Mermaid Lounge enjoying life free of charge.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with EJ, preferring his earlier works to the stuff he made later in his career. When you begin a long-term run in Vegas, you know it’s time to hang them up. I continue to believe this is one of Elton John’s finest albums, if not his absolute best. I have liked various songs here and there since the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, but nothing has knocked my socks off since then. Regardless, this album belongs on our Album of The Week radar without a doubt.

Serendipity has once again found its way into my off-the-cuff programming and given us an All-British Sunday. That can only mean good things. Good Morning, Pettyologists! It’s Rocktober, and that makes it Tom Petty Month. Now, we are not out to compete with any other music outlet by any stretch. But you’ll be seeing a bit more of The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys than usual this month. And that’s a good thing.

The reason we kick off with this album is it’s hard for a band to be this good nearly forty years on. In my mind, this album competes with Damn The Torpedos as The Heartbreakers’ best album. And The Heartbreakers were still packing them in. On the Hypnotic Eye tour, they played to 40,000 people in Boston’s historic Fenway Park.

Today’s the day, folks. We kick off Tom Petty month. Our photo today is not meant to be morbid. We celebrate Tom Petty’s life and contribution to music, both of which were huge. We merely wanted to show the outpouring of fan love that Tom Petty earned over his gigantic career. He is still missed, but his music lives on.
