We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Our birthday girl tribute to Bonnie Raitt is a great “live” studio event from 1972 held at Ultrasonic Studios in New York and broadcast on WLIR-FM with Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George (Little Feat), John Hammond, and Freebo (also known as Daniel Friedberg), who is mostly known for his work with Bonnie Raitt. 10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at the CU Events Center, University of Colorado, Boulder, December 9, 1981 NEW!

It has been a while since we aired this, but it’s sooooo good. This collection includes outtakes that were never released, alternate versions of those that were and, of course, the actual final songs that appeared on Trio I and Trio II. We hear the term “supergroup” an awful lot, but like a lot of things in music, it is never a term applied to women.

We are applying it here in The Mermaid Lounge and have always called this brilliant musical alliance of friends a supergroup. That is what they were.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!

Nobody ever talks about Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris even being a supergroup, but that’s because women are still marginalized in the music world. They were every bit a supergroup, make no mistake about it.

It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here as I prepare to return to Retail Hell. Still, your lessons are important, so here we go!

Today, we wish the great Lucinda Williams a very happy birthday indeed!

Here’s today’s lesson!

January 26, 1956: Buddy Holly recorded at Decca Records for the first time using the name Buddy and the Two Tones.

January 26, 1957: The great Fats Domino had the #1 song on the R & B chart with one of my favorites, Blue Monday.

January 26, 1961: Elvis Presley had his sixth #1 song in the UK with Are you Lonesome Tonight.

January 26, 1963: The Beatles continued their frenetic live performance pace, performing two concerts on this day. One was at the El Rio Club and Dance Hall in Maccelsfield, Cheshire. They then drove 20 miles to King’s Hall, Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire for an evening performance.

January 26, 1966: Eric Burdon handled lead vocals for Manfred Mann at a London concert, filling in for Paul Jones who was injured in an auto accident.

January 26, 1969: Just another day on the job for The Beatles. First, they recorded Let It Be and The Long and Winding Road for the upcoming Let It Be album. Then they decided to record a series of covers, including Shake, Rattle & Roll, Kansas City, Miss Ann, Blue Suede Shoes, and Lawdy Miss Clawdy. Ringo Starr wrote Octopus’s Garden on this day. Then the band came up with the idea and plan for their amazing final show — the rooftop concert on Saville Row.

January 26, 1970: Simon & Garfunkel released Bridge Over Troubled Water on this day, both the album and the hit single.

Three Dog Night also released the song Celebrate on this day.

John Lennon wrote and recorded his hit Instant Karma all in one day at Abbey Road Studios. It is known as one of the fastest releases in music history. And it’s a great fucking song to boot.

January 26, 1973: Elton John released the album Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player. I have a love-hate thing going with Sir Elton. Nothing personal. Music related.

January 26, 1974: Dolly Parton makes her first appearance on the charts with Jolene.

Born On This Day

January 26, 1953: Lucinda Williams was born in lake Charles, Louisiana. Hell, yeah!

January 26, 1944: Merilee Rush, of Angel of The Morning fame, was born in Seattle, Washington.

January 26, 1945: Ashley Hutchings, vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and bassist for the folk group Fairport Convention (yes, their music is coming) was born in Southgate, Middlesex, England.

January 26, 1948: Corky Laing, drummer for the band Mountain, was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

January 26, 1957: Not a fan of Van Halen the band. Never really have been. But I am a fan of Eddie Van Halen, kickass guitarist, and I pay him the utmost respect always. He was born on this day in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Big Things Come In Groups of Threes Today From The Mermaid Lounge, Friday, September 18, 2020

It’s finally Friday. Of course, for those of us working retail, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the week. But no matter. Today in The Mermaid Lounge, great things come in groups of three. You’ll see what I mean.

12:00 p.m. The Complete Trio Collection: Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton

I always lead off with Linda Ronstadt when I’m talking about a group of women singers. That is totally my bias, but it is without shame. No matter how you cut it, women get the short end of the straw in music. If they were guys, the word ‘supergroup’ would be flowing off everyone’s tongue. Linda, Emmylou and Dolly were a supergroup. The Complete Trio Collection proves it.

The complete collection gives you just that along with alternative versions of some of the songs and previously-unreleased material.

7:00 p.m. Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark: Together at The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville, September 3, 1995

It was Emmylou Harris who led me to Guy Clark originally. But one winter night in Harvard Square, three friends were outside in the snow freezing and decided to go into Passim’s Coffee Shop to get out of the elements for a while. Somebody was playing that night, but when I walked in and saw it was none other than Guy Clark, I was excited. The three of us were literally blown off our fucking stools. He has been a favorite ever since. A friend of Emmylou.

Now we add Steve Earle and songwriter in the extreme Townes VanZandt to the mix and what we have here is an amazing evening at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. This event took place just fifteen months before VanZand’s death.

Yeah. It’s all-country programming today. What about it? This is one of the things that makes us different than all the rest. This will be about 6 or 7 hours of actual programming. The rest of the 24-hour cycle? All open stream with no commercials. No cost. No obligation. No credit card or personal data required. Radio like it used to be.

We have featured the Trio albums in the past, but these are the Trio Sessions, with remasters, alternate versions and previously unreleased material. If you’ve never heard angels sing before, you are about to.
